Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
| I wasn't planning to issue a Newsletter today, really I wasn't, but then I noticed there was a plethora of birthdays this weekend which would otherwise not be mentioned, so what could I do?!? |

am not making this up." We have three birthdays today, and four tomorrow! Happy Birthday today to Jimmy Shires, Bruce Smith Slama, and Page Smith Morahan, all of the Class of 1957, and tomorrow to Joan Burcher Green, Sonja Settles Allen, and Patricia Branch Coltrane, also all of the Class of 1957, and to our own Mrs. Wilma Salmon Robinson (Warwick HS - '51) of VA - who was the Senior Class Sponsor of the Class of 1957! Y'all ought to all get together and have a big ol' birthday party! |

Oh, my gosh.......what a wonderful piece
you wrote about Buckroe. I never knew any of that stuff. And I so loved
going there.......as a child to ride the kiddy rides, then as a teenager to
hang out with friends and ride the "big" rides, and yes, to dance in the
pavilion. Ahhh, 1963, dancing to a band playing the Rolling Stones' "(I
Can't Get) No Satisfaction"!! Now, those were truly the good ole' days. And, thank you, 
Chandler Nelms (Hampton HS - '63 - of MD), for
finally sending a recent picture of yourself, so Carol and I can see that
you're still gorgeous.......as if you'd be anything else.

| Carol I’ve surely enjoyed all of the mystery about the air photo of Buckroe and the Ferris wheel. I started my teen years out while living in the 1300 block of 25th Street in Newport News. As with most young boys I took a keen interest in cars of the day. Living on 25th Street, I got to see an awfully lot of cars go by, and it became a past time with my friends trying to identify all by make and model. Well, I became quite good at naming all that came by from 1938 through the '50’s at that time, but stopped the hobby with the 1965 year. |

I took a look at the air photo of the beach and from what I could make out, with up to 800X blowup, was that all of the cars were no newer than '48 to '50. I said '50 because '48, '49 and '50 and some '51’s were hard to tell apart except for the placement of mirrors, ornaments, chrome or changes in Grills. The '50-'52's were a little more stream-lined than '48-'49’s. '48-'49 tops were a little more rounded than the '50’s, especially the coupes. Almost all of the cars, older than '48, had smaller back windows. Most had two piece back windows. | ||||

The only cars I could see that were from '48-'50 are in the background - one, to the top right in the parking lot, and one top middle in front of the cottages. Both were made by GM. Also, you may have noticed that there is a pier in most of the shots from the early 1900’s. The aerial shot shows that there are only pilings, the results from the storm of '33 which took the pier away. At most it could be a shot of between 1934 and 1950. The picture could not be from '29. So my best guess is sometime between 1948 and 1950.

So the ages of the cars correctly aligns with the construction dates given
to us by Mr. Stieffen! I love it when it all comes together! |

Also I've attached a pic of the old Bay Shore
Hotel, if you remember? During the late forties and fifties that Bay Shore
was predominantly a black beach just down the beach south east of Buckroe. If I remember Buckroe was not fully integrated until about 1970. God Bless Richard Dawes |

Here - as you play piano and organ, have the sheet music from my 1966 copy
of The Methodist Hymnal so that you may fully enjoy it and use
it next year. I think it's a richer arrangement (and in an easier
key) than this one I found

I was allowed to go there very seldom because of the polio threat...but once or twice every summer my Aunt Bert would take my us. My grandmother, my four cousins, my mother and myself all piled into her '56 Chevy and off we would go...granny would sit up on the pavilion in the shade and the rest of us would tromp off to the beach. Either my mother or my aunt would check on Granny regularly. We would take a picnic lunch. At the end of the day we would head for home and my grandmother would insist on stopping at Wood's for watermelon and peaches and then we would usually have to make another stop for ice cream before going home. By the time I was a teenager the polio scare was over and I went there a few times with dates...I remember the monkeys...people dancing, the little short guy who ran the bumper cars, the Tunnel of Love. It was a sweet place to go. I remember a sweet boy tracking me down there (using his dad's car...) and when I got home my mother said, "his mother called and his dad needed his car..."

wasn't that a wonderful feeling to be so adored?
