   And speaking of love stories, I have a question.  The other day Taras Bulba (1962) **** came on tellybision, and I suddenly had a returned memory - well, almost.  I wondered if one of y'all might be able to help.

   Those of y'all with total recall (as I myself used to enjoy before my brain decided it would be more interesting to shuffle, scramble, fracture, and rearrange everything in my head), might not be able to comprehend my feelings of joy at this return of memory - even a partial memory.

   This Oscar nominated movie about the 16th century Cossack fight for independence (but with a Romeo and Juliet sub-plot), starring Tony Curtis and Yul Brynner, has always been a favorite of mine.  I think it must have played at the Palace rather than the Paramount, as it was an MGM production, released in the USA on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 1962.  I remember waiting in line with my date in the cold to enter the theater.  I couldn't tell you the exact date - or even when it hit Newport News  - other than it wasn't on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, but I really think that we saw it on Friday, December 21, 1962.

   So what I'd like to know is - does anyone else remember seeing this movie when it opened?  Was it indeed the Palace Theater, or could it have been some other?  Could this in fact be the correct date, or were movies delayed in reaching Newport News?

   And why is this so important, you may wonder??  Because it's for my Creative Memories scrapbooked albums.  Therefore it's uber-critical for the date and the place to be pinpointed!

We think the Fort Monroe Authority picture just below shows the wisdom in the alarms reported above. It shows a vision for a gated community without the gate -- on historically, recreationally, and environmentally precious land that has been publicly owned since the days of Jamestown. Recently the public expressed its will about this land overwhelmingly. If the public's will isn't ignored, everything on the foreground side of the moated fortress could well become green space -- more environmentally friendly for the health of our beautiful Chesapeake Bay, more fitting for the historic "viewshed," and much-needed public access to waterfront parkland, and for a solid plan by which all of Fort Monroe can become a self-sustaining "grand public place."  The second picture below -- cobbled together by CFMNP's Webmaster -- shows one possible alternative to the "new Hampton neighborhood" in the first picture. This alternative respects the will of Fort Monroe's actual owners -- "the American people," as Fort Monroe Authority Chairman L. Preston Bryant, Jr., wrote in a recent public letter.

BELOW: CFMNP Webmaster Dave Gurganus cobbled this alternative view together, just to give a sense of the possibilities for a "grand public place" that could enrich all of us in multiple ways -- including financial enrichment for Hampton.

Reminder from Citizens for a Fort Monroe National Park (CFMNP.org): It's not too late to join many who have written to the National Park Service. Last Monday's appeal re-appears at http://www.cfmnp.org/updates_archive.htm, but the core message is simple: in as little as a sentence or three, please just tell the NPS why you believe that NPS involvement is the only sure way to manage post-Army Fort Monroe appropriately. (For a reminder of why this belief is valid, look no farther than the new picture near the top at CFMNP.org, also shown at the top of this e-mail.) The NPS knows Fort Monroe is historically precious. They must decide whether they believe NPS management would be clearly superior to some combination of the state, Hampton and private entities. We hope you'll tell them that it would be superior, and why. Thanks.

This was a particularly newsy edition, and I was stressing over how to include it all by the scanning method I had been using.  Well … I would like to offer my very belated, but very sincere thanks to the Beacon Staff for selecting a newsprint size in which each page is exactly twice the size of an 8 ½ x 11 sheet. As a result, I found it to be embarrassingly simple to scan the top and bottom of each page with a bit of overlap.

So, herein is the entire edition. Indeed, I plan to similarly scan future issues. No longer will I have to decide what the alumni get to see; now they will be able to see it all.

(or there about) and as low as 17 cents during gas wars.

		Old American Gas Stations from all around the country   Some are abandoned, some are restored and many are still in use.

Yeah . . .  I remember!

 And with a fill-up you got the gas pumped for you, your windshield cleaned, oil and fluids checked, tires checked,
a free map, if you wanted it, and greeted in ENGLISH !!!

Yeah! I remember!!!
