03/07/08 - NNHS Newsletter
“I think about you constantly, whether it's with my mind or my heart.” |
Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
Despite the fact
that this song is a sentimental favorite of mine, today's theme is also being
rerun from over three years ago primarily because I'm a slacker, and it saves me
a great deal of time!

Here's a live performance from Saturday, October 2, 1965 for your enjoyment:
SPECIAL BONUS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_f16t1JGHo - We Five - Live On Hollywood Palace - Introduced by Fred Astaire

BACKGROUND:
From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 01/01/05:
Some background: The album containing this
song was published while I was at USNA.
It would be an understatement
to say that it took the Brigade by storm. Mids were standing in line at the
Midshipman's Store to buy it. This was the only
song you could hear emanating from every upper class room which had a
turntable. Mids hummed it on the way to class
and in the shower. It holds immeasurable nostalgia value for me.

The composer was Sylvia Fricker. If
you do not already know this, she was half of the 50s/60s folkie group, Ian & Sylvia: (http://www.canoe.ca/JamMusicPopEncycloPagesI/ ian_and_sylvia.html) (http://www.vanguardrecords.com/ian-sylvia/) The lead singer for We Five was Beverly Bivens. She had a voice to die for. On another cut on the album, she trails off a note to a slow moan/grown which gave me "impure thoughts" .... and still does. |
|
| This whole We Five "Thing" made me run down to the Library and excavate for my vinyl copy from my days at USNA. | Sorry for the blur -- bad digi-cam setting. I got smarter for the next one. | ||
The group never recaptured the fire of their first album and faded from the scene. I once did a "PeopleFinder" search on her name and got three hits. One was in Arizona, which seemed like a likely place for a now-forgotten star. Maybe I will call the number some day.
Thank you so much, Captain - again!

From My Niece, Shari, of VA -
03/05/08 - "Woman":
Woman
This is written in the Hebrew Talmud, the book where all of the sayings and
preaching of Rabbis are conserved over time.
It says: "Be very careful if you make a woman cry, because God counts her tears.
The woman came out of a man's rib. Not from his feet to be walked on. Not from
his head to be superior, but from the side to be equal. Under the arm to be
protected, and next to the heart to be loved."
Pass this on to all exceptional women that you know.. and to men so they
know the value of a woman.
Thanks, Shari!

From Jennings Bryan (June '42) of VA - 03/06/08:
We depleted our reunion checking account with a contribution to the Ethel Gildersleeve Foundation at Christopher Newport University. You will be surprised that the fund now has in excess of $220,000.00. This year it is funding the education of a young lady at CNU, just from the interest generated. You might mention to future reunions that they consider donating surplus funds to this worthy cause.
WOWZERONI-ROONI!
I would be most delighted to
receive those early yearbooks, Jennings!
Thank you so very much!
With images scanned from them I
could greatly expand the value of the website.
I'm relatively certain that some of the other classes have already made contributions to the Ethel Gildersleeve Foundation, but thank you for the reminder - particularly as reunions are beginning to be on our minds again.
And isn't it strange
that our medical information sometimes comes from the most unlikely of
sources?!? We wish you well, Jennings!

From Norm Covert ('61) of MD -
03/06/08 - "Friend and Classmate":
Webdoll.
It is distressing that you are suffering cardio-pulmonary challenges these days. Those of us who have endured those maladies [and been brought back from the dark tunnel] know the cause is any of a thousand diagnoses. Some are bad, some really, really bad! Reducing stress helps a lot, but sometimes you need help. Certainly we pray for healing of your body, mind and soul. The prayer roll is chock full of those in need of God’s mighty touch.
I don’t
know the real reason why -- unless I’m that age, but reading the obituary of my
classmate
SHIRLEY
MARKOFF KLEIN (’61, Va.), seems to touched a nerve in me. She was
such a nice girl, always alive, smiling, full of fun, and easy for all of us to
get to know and appreciate. I’ve not written a condolence to her family because
the context is difficult for me. We were brothers and sisters during school days
and I haven’t seen her since probably June 1961. What a loss that is! She became
the quality adult she was as an elementary and high schooler. As our lives went
in different directions, we lost the bonds forged in the class rooms in Newport
News.
Let me just say that I remember what a great girl Shirley was as we met in the hallways of NNHS, the classrooms, the gymnasium and Saunders Stadium as “Newport born and Newport bred …. “ May she rest in eternal peace.
Norm Covert (’61, MD)
Thank
you so much for your beautiful note and prayers, Normie!

I really empathized with your feelings about Shirley. When I first began reconnecting with old friends after 25 years apart, I was quite devastated to learn of the deaths that had transpired - some much more than others, of course..... I always feel so sorry for people who are just joining us now and read all those In Memoriam sections at once. That pain must be excruciating! It was often more than I could bear finding out about each one on an individual basis.
I've cross-posted the second portion of your note:

ALERT:
From Joe Drewry ('58) of VA - 03/06/08, 3:38 AM (sic) - "Update on
Marriott room reservations for NNHS58 'Noble Gathering'":
|
Jesse Kersey has talked to the Marriott and they have agreed to increase the number of rooms available for our NNHS58 reunion group at the $119 special rate.
Also, several classmates are planning to extend their stay. The Marriott
has agreed to add days before or after at the same rate.
Please let me know if you have any problem getting the special rate and I
will get Jesse to work it out. Sometimes the reservation clerk on duty
has not been informed about the flexibility.
|
From Joe Drewry ('58) of VA - 03/06/08, 6:03 PM - "Another Update on
making Marriott room reservation for NNHS58":
|
Several classmates have reported difficulty with making reservations at the Williamsburg Marriott at the $119/night rate for the NNHS58 Reunion.
We think the problem may occur when you call the 800 reservation number.
Try using the local number to get to the onsite reservation person:
1-757-220-2500
If you have made a reservation and were quoted an amount greater than the
$119, email Jesse and he will run interference for you to get the rate
corrected. Only contact Jesse if you have actually made a reservation at
the higher rate.
Jesse Kersey's email is (available upon request from Joe -
Jwdvt@aol.com)

Thanks, Joe!

You Were on My Mind
Written by Sylvia Fricker, 1964
(We
Five, 1965)
When I woke up this morning
You were on my mind
And you were on my mind
I got troubles, whoa-whoa
I got worries, whoa-whoa
I got wounds to bind
So I went to the corner
Just to ease my pains
I got troubles, whoa-whoa
I got worries, whoa-whoa
I came home again
When I woke up this morning
You were on my mi-i-i-ind and
You were on my mind
I got troubles, whoa-whoa
I got worries, whoa-whoa
I got wounds to bind
Hey, I got a feelin'
Down in my sho-oo-oo-oes, said-a
Way down in my sho-oo-oes
Yeah, I got to ramble, whoa-whoa
I got to move on, whoa-whoa
I got to walk away my blues
When I woke up this morning
You were on my mind
You were on my mind
I got troubles, whoa-whoa
I got worries, whoa-whoa
I got wounds to bind
