Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
Belatedly, we have more sad news tonight. Dorothy Wilder Spain passed away on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 in Newport News at the age of 89.

From Sheila Smith Moler ('64) of FL - 03/22/08 - "Dorothy Spain":
Dear Carol:
I was wondering why, and more than a little surprised, that no one has mentioned the passing of Dorothy Spain on Tuesday the 18th. Her husband, Linwood, died about two years ago. They organized, emceed, and chaperoned the dances at the Community Center across the street from Parkview Baptist Church, and the dances on the tennis court at Highland Park in the summer for years and years. There were special "dress up" Christmas and school's out parties also (with cake and punch that I suspect they paid for themselves). If it weren't for them, these dances would never have happened. I remember tons of kids that lived in the area, Briarfield, Sussex Hilton, Newmarket and all the surrounding areas that showed up at the dances. Don't they remember them? They were wonderful people that really loved kids. It's a shame no one remembers all the good they did and the fun we had because of their unselfish giving of their time. Just wondering......
Sheila (Smith) Moler
Thank you, Sheila.
I saw this obituary, and wondered if
she were one of "ours". I did not recognize her name, though, nor know of
her achievements. I suspect those who did know her missed seeing
the obituary, or like you, they would have told me.

| I am sorry to hear that Grandma is gone. She and Granddaddy were the closest thing I ever had to grandparents and your family didn't mind sharing them with Steph and me. She was one of the kindest, gentlest and sweetest persons God blessed me with the honor to know. I thank you for sharing her and Grandaddy; they will always have a special place in my heart and will never be forgotten. God Bless you all and you are in my Prayers. Love ya'll. |

Dorothy was SPECIAL to her
neighbors here at River Ridge @ Lake Gaston, VA...She & her family took us
in as Part of the Family when we bought our place here at the lake. Many a
day she could be seen on her knees weeding and trimming her beautiful flower
gardens. We Thank The Lord for the privilege of knowing her here on this
side of heaven for these years... we look forward to sitting with her, Linwood, Luther, Robert Lee, and Doris at Jesus feet and thanking Him for ALL HIS BLESSINGS. Our sympathy to the family. |

Nature As a fond mother, when the day is o'er, Leads by the hand her little child to bed, Half willing, half reluctant to be led, And leave his broken playthings on the floor, Still gazing at them through the open door, Nor wholly reassured and comforted By promises of others in their stead, Which, though more splendid, may not please him more; So Nature deals with us, and takes away Our playthings one by one, and by the hand Leads us to rest so gently, that we go Scarce knowing if we wish to go or stay, Being too full of sleep to understand How far the unknown transcends the what we know |

Warm Summer Sun Warm summer sun, Shine kindly here, Warm southern wind, Blow softly here. Green sod above, Lie light, lie light. Good night, dear heart, Good night, good night. By Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens) The Poetry Foundation Music, when soft voices die Music, when soft voices die, Vibrates in the memory— Odours, when sweet violets sicken, Live within the sense they quicken. Rose leaves, when the rose is dead, Are heaped for the belovèd's bed; And so thy thoughts, when thou art gone, Love itself shall slumber on. |

Remember Remember me when I am gone away, Gone far away into the silent land; When you can no more hold me by the hand, Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay. Remember me when no more day by day You tell me of our future that you plann'd: Only remember me; you understand It will be late to counsel then or pray. Yet if you should forget me for a while And afterwards remember, do not grieve: For if the darkness and corruption leave A vestige of the thoughts that once I had, Better by far you should forget and smile Than that you should remember and be sad. |

Abide With Me
Words by Henry F. Lyte, 1847
Music by William H. Monk, 1861
Abide with me; fast falls the
eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.
Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day;
Earth's joys grow dim; its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see;
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.
Not a brief glance I beg, a passing word,
But as Thou dwell'st with Thy disciples, Lord,
Familiar, condescending, patient, free.
Come not to sojourn, but abide with me.
Come not in terrors, as the King of kings,
But kind and good, with healing in Thy wings;
Tears for all woes, a heart for every plea.
Come, Friend of sinners, thus abide with me.
Thou on my head in early youth didst smile,
And though rebellious and perverse meanwhile,
Thou hast not left me, oft as I left Thee.
On to the close, O Lord, abide with me.
I need Thy presence every passing hour.
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.
I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.
Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.
