Carol and Typhoon Family....

This morning I called Heidi (Hice MacKay - of MI), and the answering machine picked up. Unusual, I thought to myself. An hour later I called again, same thing...my heart sank, but my spirit said, wait, they could be transferring him to the Rehab Center. I waited until about two p.m., and with a prayer on my lips dialed her number again. One, two, three rings...on the third ring she picked up and sounded pleasant and calm. She and the day care kids had been outside in the warm weather playing and she wore them out; they were sleeping when I called, and she was enjoying the peace and quiet !

"How's your Dad ?" I nearly shouted out of relief ! "He is still about the same, but some days better, some worse; stays off the vent for as along as eleven hours." She went on to tell me that she had given him a manicure, and he made faces at her because he was being disturbed; he does it when they brush his teeth too, to let the nurses know that they are annoying him. He is still strong and all tests and vital signs are good.

I wish I could tell you he is at Rehab, but I can't. But he is aware of what is going on. Perhaps what he needs is a Marine Drill Sergeant in his room shouting orders, maybe that would wake him up ! Semper Fi, Herbie.....!

When you are at the grocery, by a card, send it to Herbie, his address is on last Monday's Newsletter. Do you want him to think we Typhoons are a bunch of Slackers ? Buy three or four and send one every week. It could be one of us ! But it is Herbie ! He needs us !

2. My Niece Shari's Friend, Gayle - and Aries, Emily's Kitten:

From My Niece, Shari, of VA - 04/07/08 - "AN URGENT PRAYER REQUEST!":

When I had my back problems, a couple years ago, my former Relief Society president helped greatly with Emily. I thought she was on the road to recovery after a few back surgeries herself, in a couple week's time (sounds familiar), only to find out I was mistaken. She has been in UVA, for over 6 weeks. Fluid accumulated in her, as it did with Emily, but invaded her lungs. The bottom lobes on both of her lungs collapsed. I just called her for a second, and she sounds so very weak. I feel so badly for her, and I know she shares my feelings of claustrophobia, and this is giving her that feeling, a lot. Please take a moment and pray for her! Gayle is a nice person and is in very, very bad shape. The fluid, though drained, continues to collect, I'm told. She's only in her fifties.

On a lesser note I just adopted a little Japanese Bobtail 6 lb. kitten this morning for Emily. After being altered he came down with a respiratory infection due to the trauma. I was told he was well, and now he sounds sickly. A nice and highly intelligent eighty year old man hand fed him since birth, (I say that because the man knows a lot, about many topics). Anyway... I thought Aries (the kitten) would be great for Emily and for me. He's so, so, cute; but I hope will get well. I have my hands full with Emily, as the pain medicine is not working like it was, and I didn't realize the kitten was going to need doting on, as well.

This is important...it is not junk...Identity Theft Scam...I just verified on Snopes and on the FBI site...It's an old trick beginning in 2005, but still very active.

Please be aware of the following jury duty scam out there:

Jury Duty Scam - DO NOT DELETE WITHOUT READING !

This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below). Please pass this on to everyone in your email address book. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.

The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify t he information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo; your identity was just stolen.

The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma, Illinois , and Colorado . This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system. The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

Please let Raoul know that my Aunt and Uncle in Lakeland are, indeed, for real. If I could get the date, time, and location of the sock hop, I will let them both know.

And, I will be sure to tell them to look up Raoul (Weinstein - '57 - of FL) for a free drink and a free dance. My Aunt would surely love that dance as she has always been a kid at heart.

(And I think the drink would be just what my Uncle needed!!)

How cool would that be?!? According to the flyer here, the dance is Saturday, April 26, 2008 at the Lake Mirror Center in Lakeland from 7:00 PM until Midnight. As it is a fundraiser, tickets are $50.00 a couple in advance, and $60.00 per couple at the door. Thanks, Joe Sweetie!

Wish I could attend the sock hop. I would love to see my birth place. I was born in Lakeland but left when I was six years old due to a hurricane that destroyed my dad's citrus farm. Having returned from WWII and started the farm, Dad (Clifford Phillips) did not have the funds to rebuild it.

I have never been back but hope to visit it one day.

The following that was in today's newsletter is indeed a true story. I remember reading the article about it in the newspaper. You can still find that article on-line by doing a Google search on - John Lovell, Marine, Robbery - Surprisingly, I did not find it on Snopes either and perhaps that is because it was in national news and so was not questioned.

Robbers are often just plain dumb and these two were double dumb. The older we get the less that we have to lose and often that means that we just might be more likely to react than someone younger. Not only did they pick on an older guy but also on a former Marine who was still in good condition. Just another example of dumb crooks.

The story that is in your newsletter, stated that the shooting took place on July 6th on a Wednesday night. A Modern Parable. But Very Very True.........

A Japanese company (Toyota) and an American company (Ford Motors) decided to have a canoe race on the Missouri River. Both teams practiced long and hard to reach their peak performance before the race.

On the big day, the Japanese won by a mile.

The Americans, very discouraged and depressed, decided to investigate the reason for the crushing defeat. A management team made up of senior management was formed to investigate and recommend appropriate action.

Their conclusion was the Japanese had 8 people rowing and 1 person steering, while the American team had 7 people steering and 2 people rowing.

Feeling a deeper study was in order; American management hired a consulting company and paid them a large amount of money for a second opinion.

They advised, of course, that too many people were steering the boat, while not enough people were rowing.

Not sure of how to utilize that information, but wanting to prevent another loss to the Japanese, the rowing team's management structure was totally reorganized to 4 steering supervisors, 2 area steering superintendents and 1 assistant superintendent steering manager.

They also implemented a new performance system that would give the 2 people rowing the boat greater incentive to work harder. It was called the 'Rowing Team Quality First Program,' with meetings, dinners and free pens for the rowers. There was discussion of getting new paddles, canoes and other equipment, extra vacation days for practices and bonuses. The pension program was trimmed to "equal the competition" and some of the resultant savings were channeled into morale boosting programs and teamwork posters.

The next year the Japanese won by two miles.

Humiliated, the American management laid-off one rower, halted development of a new canoe, sold all the paddles, and canceled all capital investments for new equipment. The money saved was distributed to the Senior Executives as bonuses.

The next year, try as he might, the lone designated rower was unable to even finish the race (having no paddles,) so he was laid off for unacceptable performance, all canoe equipment was sold and the next year's racing team was out-sourced to India .

Sadly, the End.

Here's something else to think about: Ford has spent the last thirty years moving all its factories out of the US, claiming they can't make money paying American wages.

TOYOTA has spent the last thirty years building more than a dozen plants inside the US. The last quarter's results:

TOYOTA makes 4 billion in profits while Ford racked up 9 billion in losses.

Ford folks are still scratching their heads, and collecting bonuses…….

Deloris Jackson Morgan ('66) of VA - recovering from surgery on her ankle; update of 04/05/08: "has had a cast reapplied and then replaced in the past 2 weeks, and will have to have the pin in her ankle replaced on April 22nd. She is in good spirits and gets around on a little scooter. She can't use crutches because of back surgery fairly recently. She has a lot of pain and discomfort with that, too."

14. Linda Lamb Stokes (Hampton HS - '66) of VA - surgery of the cervical spine on 3/5/08 to place a new stainless steel plate and screws to eliminate extremely severe pain; update of 03/13/08: "better, but still a bit away from 'good'"

15. Patsy Lewis Hancock ('57) of VA - suffered second massive heart attack - 01/31/08; update of 03/13/08: "is doing very well. She is taking some kind of cardio rehab therapy and she is feeling well enough that she has gone back to work. She's only working 1/2 days..."

16. John London (Warwick HS - '57) of VA - lumbar surgery to fix a spinal stenosis [ laminectomy]; will also involve fusion of vertebrae - 02/05/08

17. Pam Pennington Cherry ('58) of VA - congestive heart failure; cardiac ablation procedure - 02/06/08; second surgery on 02/20/08 for aneurysm; update of 03/17/08 - still experiencing difficulty with heart racing, breathing and pressure in her chest; pray that cardiac ablation procedure will not have to be repeated, and that Pam can learn to REST!
