Fifty Years Ago Today

“It's a pleasure to share one's memories. Everything
remembered is dear, endearing, touching, precious.
At least the past is safe ---though we didn't know it
at the time. We know it now. Because it's in the past,
because we have survived."

- Susan Sontag

Wednesday, April 23, 2008

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
Today's special edition is brought to you courtesy of the combined genius of
Bill Lee (Warwick HS - '54) of NC and        Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - as follows:

From Bill Lee (Warwick HS - '54) of NC - 04/23/08 - "Fifty Years ago today":

On the evening of Wednesday, April 23, 1958 the Esso Oil Terminal in Newport News caught fire and burned for roughly 24 hours before being brought under some semblance of control. It was days before everything finally cooled off. Civilian and military fire departments from all over the Peninsula fought the blaze. After their entire foam supply had been exhausted, the Navy barged more from Norfolk and unloaded it at the nearest C&O coal pier. The loss was reportedly over one million dollars (a big amount in 1958).

You may wonder why I remember it so well. That's because I was right in the middle of it all...a story for another time.

   WOWZERONI-RINI-ROONI-ROOTIE-TOOT-TOOTIE!!!

Bill, you of course have no way of knowing that this is one of those events to which I have been trying to attach a date for the last forty-eleven years! We talked about it here several times years ago. Somewhere in my files there's a body of evidence to support that, and I shall extricate it presently, but I'm burning daylight here and now. You are my hero! Thanks so much!

If you wait long enough, Life's Mysteries have a way of being revealed.....

ALERT:

     From Me ('65) of NC - 04/23/08:

I had a surprise phone call from   Bill Black ('66) of GA this afternoon as he was driving up to VA.  He and I both agreed that the perfect people to come see this production would be       Dave and      Pam Smith Arnold (both '65 - of VA) - for obvious parallels between their lives and the script:

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/Celebration-07-17-04.html

http://www.ironstreetproductions.com/Production%20Notes.htm

I certainly hope y'all can make it!

From Bill Black ('66) of GA to   Dee Hodges Bartram ('66) of VA - 04/21/08 - "'Well, I Guess I'm Back' Premiere":

I've spoken to Le'Royce E. Bratsveen about ticket sales for my little play reading this coming Saturday night, and she paints a pretty bleak picture. There'll be an ad in Thursday's Daily Press, and David Nicholson might be running a story in Friday's paper.    Dick Lamb will almost definitely have me on the air at 92.9 the Wave one day this week,  and there's a slim possibility I'll actually be on-camera with WTKR's noon news.  All of that is last minute stuff,  so I hope people would still to be able to make plans to attend the reading.

The reading of Bill Black's play, "Well I Guess I'm Back" is this Saturday night, April 26th, 8PM at the Dr. Mary Christian Auditorium at Thomas Nelson Community College.  Tickets are $12.00.
Bill says: "Don't let the fact that the name Jim Quinn appears as the playwright, it's me, but that's the air name I used for many years at the Sooper Q, WTAR, and WRVA in Richmond.  I thought it would help me with the media publicity, but that ain't happened, so the whole evening might turn out to be the second stupidest thing I ever did on the Peninsula.  The first was when I stood up at Mouse Assembly our senior year and described the in-coming eighth graders by saying: "Don't mock the afflicted...."   Which I hope everyone remembers as a line from "A Hard Day's Night"...  Huh?  The Beatles' first movie...What?  Those four guys from Liverpool .. Never mind.."

Anyone interested?  Hopefully everyone saw "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" last weekend, so there's nothing else worth seeing at the movies.  Call Le'Royce Bratsveen, artistic director of Iron Street Productions, at 244-8937.   Call often, buy lots of tickets.  One of you on the mailing list has knowledge of at least one of the other stupid things I've done.  I think I'll recognize you; just tug on your ear in case I don't.  It's been a long time.

And if any of you can't attend, call    Margaret Burns Edwards ('67) at Floral Fashions, 868-0405, for a suitable memorial arrangement.  If you all pool your money, it won't cost much.

Oh!  What's "Well, I Guess I'm Back?" all about?  It's a love story, basically, and the third stupidest thing I've ever done...  Anything else, ya gotta pay.  But that also lets you rip me to bits at the Q&A afterwards. Careful, though, the director and the cast are on all my side.

Thanks, Dee.  Hope you can come.

Bill

Thank you, Bill! I certainly wish I could be there myself, but that isn't possible right now.    The rest of y'all have a great evening in store - so BUY THOSE TICKETS!!!

Mere moments after Bill's call, I had another surprise phone call, this time from:

HEALTH UPDATES:

1.     Jimmy Smith ('62) of VA, who suffered heart attack on 02/13/08, but is now doing wonderfully well, passing his tests with flying colors and feeling great again.

2.     From Pat Beck Letzinger ('57) of VA - 04/22/08 - "NNHS Class of '57 - FYI Death of Brucey Smith Slama's Husband":

Dear Classmates:

I received the following email from Page Smith Morahan concerning the death of her sister's husband, Norman.  If you saw him at the 50th reunion you could tell he wasn't in good health.  I am so sorry to hear of Brucey's loss, as I'm sure all you Classmates are too.  Please send your wonderful support to our fellow Classmate whose heart is broken at this time.

Brucey had recently written to me asking that I put both she and Norm on our new Prayer List. I'm very sorry I didn't get a chance to do so before Norman passed away.  Please keep Brucey in your prayers and thoughts and let her know how much we care.

Typhoon regards.

Pat Beck Letzinger

Pat,

Brucey's husband, Norman Slama, died at home today, April 22. There will be a memorial service on May 10.

You can send support to her in California at: (address, phone, and email addy available upon request).

OHHH, Pat, I'm so sorry to hear this latest sadness! I'll be making a Memorial Newsletter for Norman as soon as more information becomes available. Thank you for letting us know.

     From Me ('65) of NC - 04/23/08 - "Teachers":

Now that I have the individual teacher pages looking a bit more uniform, I'm starting to "gussy them up" a bit.  Of course, the very best way to do that is with your personal remembrances, so please let me hear from you. Thanks!

Fire

(The Crazy World of Arthur Brown)

I am the god of hell fire and I bring you:
Fire, I'll take you to burn.
Fire, I'll take you to learn.
I'll see you burn!
You fought hard and you saved and learned,
but all of it's going to burn.
And your mind, your tiny mind,
you know you've really been so blind.
Now 's your time burn your mind.
You're falling far too far behind.
Oh no, oh no, oh no, you gonna burn!
Fire, to destroy all you've done.
Fire, to end all you've become.
I'll feel you burn!
You've been living like a little girl,
in the middle of your little world.
And your mind, your tiny mind,
you know you've really been so blind.
Now 's your time burn your mind,
you're falling far too far behind.
