From Bill Black ('66) of GA to Dee Hodges Bartram ('66) of VA - 04/21/08 - "'Well, I Guess I'm Back' Premiere":

I've spoken to Le'Royce E. Bratsveen about ticket sales for my little play reading this coming Saturday night, and she paints a pretty bleak picture. There'll be an ad in Thursday's Daily Press, and David Nicholson might be running a story in Friday's paper. Dick Lamb will almost definitely have me on the air at 92.9 the Wave one day this week, and there's a slim possibility I'll actually be on-camera with WTKR's noon news. All of that is last minute stuff, so I hope people would still to be able to make plans to attend the reading.

The reading of Bill Black's play, "Well I Guess I'm Back" is this Saturday night, April 26th, 8PM at the Dr. Mary Christian Auditorium at Thomas Nelson Community College. Tickets are $12.00. Bill says: "Don't let the fact that the name Jim Quinn appears as the playwright, it's me, but that's the air name I used for many years at the Sooper Q, WTAR, and WRVA in Richmond. I thought it would help me with the media publicity, but that ain't happened, so the whole evening might turn out to be the second stupidest thing I ever did on the Peninsula. The first was when I stood up at Mouse Assembly our senior year and described the in-coming eighth graders by saying: "Don't mock the afflicted...." Which I hope everyone remembers as a line from "A Hard Day's Night"... Huh? The Beatles' first movie...What? Those four guys from Liverpool .. Never mind.."

Anyone interested? Hopefully everyone saw "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" last weekend, so there's nothing else worth seeing at the movies. Call Le'Royce Bratsveen, artistic director of Iron Street Productions, at 244-8937. Call often, buy lots of tickets. One of you on the mailing list has knowledge of at least one of the other stupid things I've done. I think I'll recognize you; just tug on your ear in case I don't. It's been a long time.

And if any of you can't attend, call Margaret Burns Edwards ('67) at Floral Fashions, 868-0405, for a suitable memorial arrangement. If you all pool your money, it won't cost much.

Oh! What's "Well, I Guess I'm Back?" all about? It's a love story, basically, and the third stupidest thing I've ever done... Anything else, ya gotta pay. But that also lets you rip me to bits at the Q&A afterwards. Careful, though, the director and the cast are on all my side.

Hey, "Web Queen"!

Here is a happy update. Jerry is no longer taking daily abdominal injections for that blood clot that developed a few weeks ago. Everything is looking good. He saw both the oncologist and the radiologist yesterday and everything is looking pretty good. The PET scan will be in the next few weeks. We are expecting good results.

Deloris did pretty well on her surgery Tuesday to replace that pin in her ankle. She will be going with us to OBX this weekend to celebrate.

Thank God and thanks to Typhoons for the prayers!

THERE IS A MORAL HERE!

A C-130 was lumbering along when a cocky F-16 flashed by. The jet jockey decided to show off.

The fighter jock told the C-130 pilot, "watch this!" and promptly went into a barrel roll followed by a steep climb. He then finished with a sonic boom as he broke the sound barrier. The F-16 pilot asked the C-130 pilot what he thought of that?

The C-130 pilot said, "That was impressive, but watch this!"

The C-130 droned along for about 5 minutes and then the C-130 pilot came back on and said: "What did you think of that?"

Puzzled, the F-16 pilot asked, "What the hell did you do?"

The C-130 pilot chuckled. "I stood up, stretched my legs, walked to the back, went to the bathroom, then got a cup of coffee and a cinnamon bun."

When you are young & foolish - speed & flash may seem a good thing !!!
When you get older & smarter - comfort & dull is not such a bad thing !!!

We older folks understand this one!

Hi Carol--

I love looking at the old Beacon images but something really caught my eye of an event that I have never forgotten-an article on the death of Russell Maynard ('61). He died from a car accident when his car hit a tree. I was with some friends and we were the first ones to come across the wreck. I remember coming around a bend in the road and wondering why there was a car on its side up against a tree with the lights on and the engine running. We stopped immediately and the guys told us girls to stay in the car while they checked it out. They came back to the car and said there was a guy in bad shape and they didn't think he was going to make it. They were visibly shaken and I was so glad that I stayed in the car. The next day I found out it was Russell Maynard and I really freaked because I knew him and have always thought that if I had seen him that maybe I could have comforted him and at least he could have seen a familiar face as he died instead of strangers.

There are things/events in your life that you will always remember--this is one of mine.

As it crossed the top and bottom sections of the Beacon page, neither did I try to piece it together. Recently I overheard a mother and daughter in their last moments together at the airport. They had announced the departure. Standing near the security gate, they hugged and the mother said, 'I love you, and I wish you enough.'

The daughter replied, 'Mom, our life together has been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Mom.'

They kissed and the daughter left. The mother walked over to the window where I was seated. Standing there I could see she wanted and needed to cry. I tried not to intrude on her privacy, but she welcomed me in by asking, 'Did you ever say good-bye to someone knowing it would be forever?'

'Yes, I have,' I replied. 'Forgive me for asking, but why is this a forever good-bye?'.

'I am old, and she lives so far away. I have challenges ahead and the reality is - the next trip back will be for my funeral,' she said.

'When you were saying good-bye, I heard you say, 'I wish you enough.' May I ask what that means?'

She began to smile. 'That's a wish that has been handed down from other generations. My parents used to say it to everyone.'

She paused a moment and looked up as if trying to remember it in detail, and she smiled even more. 'When we said, 'I wish you enough,' we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with just enough good things to sustain them.'

Then turning toward me, she shared the following as if she were reciting it from memory. I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright no matter how gray the day may appear. I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun even more. I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive and everlasting. I wish you enough pain so that even the smallest of joys in life may appear bigger. I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting. I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess. I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye.

She then began to cry and walked away.

They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them, a day to love them; but then an entire life to forget them.

TAKE TIME TO LIVE..... To all my friends and loved ones, I WISH YOU ENOUGH!!

Jerry Allen ('65) of VA - began radiation for cancer last week of February; it was delayed when he was diagnosed with pneumonia on 02/20/08; update of 03/11/08: recovered from pneumonia, is in his third week of radiation, and seems to be doing well. He is back at work and comes home tired, but overall, he is in pretty good shape; update of 03/24/08: last radiation treatment was Friday; "looking good and feeling pretty good except for very irritated skin and fatigue"; update of 04/05/08: "getting better each day"; update of 04/14/08: "now dealing with a blood clot in his pic line; receiving daily injections in the abdomen and taking antibiotics and blood thinners; feels pretty good in spite of everything and his ATTITUDE is great---as usual"; update of update of 04/24/08: "no longer taking daily abdominal injections for blood clot that developed a few weeks ago; everything is looking pretty good. The PET scan will be in the next few weeks. We are expecting good results."

2. Connie Bloxom Thompson ('66) of MD - multiple heath and financial issues; needing cataract surgery to prevent inevitable blindness ASAP; update of 03/11/08: "SO FAR, 1/2 FUNDS FOR 1 EYE PROCEDURE"; update of 03/28/08: re-hospitalized; $1475.00 received so far; still short of $2000.00 goal

3. My Friend Judy of IL - shoulder replacement surgery - 04/22/08

4. Clyde Bryant ('58) of PA - heart replacement surgery - 12/13/07

5. Me ('65) of NC - recent (late January) development of congestive heart failure plus the usual financial woes; update of 03/28/08: not as well as I'd hoped to be by now; more downs than ups..... ; update of 04/18/08 - SEE: 04/18/08

6. Emily (daughter of My Niece Shari) of VA - advancing scoliosis; surgery 03/11/08; update of 03/12/08: surgery went well, running slight fever; update of 03/18/08: had some ups and lows, but is home again; update of 04/14/08 - still in pain, running a fever; update of 04/18/08 - SEE: 04/18/08

7. Karen Hampton (Hampton HS - '64) of VA - knee surgery on 03/13/08; update of 03/22/08: recovering nicely

8. Frances Heath Scott ('62) of VA - inflammation of nerves; due to have been released from hospital on 02/27/08; update of 04/14/08 - "at home recuperating"

9. Bobby Hedrick ('58) of VA - recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer; update of 03/22/08: "doing very well, no pain, just some soreness"

Deloris Jackson Morgan ('66) of VA - recovering from surgery on her ankle; update of 04/05/08: "has had a cast reapplied and then replaced in the past 2 weeks, and will have to have the pin in her ankle replaced on April 22nd. She is in good spirits and gets around on a little scooter. She can't use crutches because of back surgery fairly recently. She has a lot of pain and discomfort with that, too"; update of 04/14/08: "doing better and sounded great (on 04/12)"; update of 04/14/08: "doing better and sounded great (on 04/12)"; update of 04/24/08 - "did pretty well on her surgery Tuesday to replace that pin in her ankle. She will be going with (the Allens) to OBX this weekend to celebrate";

11. Jesse Kersey ('58) of VA: update of 04/14/08 - "remains hospitalized, continues to undergo tests, and doctors suspect the problem may be thyroid related"; update of 04/18/08 - SEE ABOVE

12. Linda Lamb Stokes (Hampton HS - '66) of VA - surgery of the cervical spine on 3/5/08 to place a new stainless steel plate and screws to eliminate extremely severe pain; update of 03/13/08: "better, but still a bit away from 'good'"

13. John London (Warwick HS - '57) of VA - lumbar surgery to fix a spinal stenosis [ laminectomy]; will also involve fusion of vertebrae - 02/05/08

14. Pam Pennington Cherry ('58) of VA - congestive heart failure; cardiac ablation procedure - 02/06/08; second surgery on 02/20/08 for aneurysm; update of 03/17/08 - still experiencing difficulty with heart racing, breathing and pressure in her chest; pray that cardiac ablation procedure will not have to be repeated, and that Pam can learn to REST!
