I chose today's rather obscure Beatles' song (if any Beatles' song can be considered obscure), because it appeared on their second album, released in the UK as With the Beatles on 11/22/63, and in the USA as Meet the Beatles! on 01/20/64. Why are those dates significant, you ask?!? Stay tuned for today's exciting answer.

I also enjoyed the "Amazing Grace" video Charles (Snead - '64 - of NC) sent in to us. Perhaps you are unaware that there was a DVD movie recently put out of the very same name and subject matter. If they had not made it so very slow, I believe it would have been a huge hit. I can not for the life of me figure out why they make historic movies slow. Do they think colonial people ran in slow mo? Any how, that's not even the point I want to make. The point is that now, today, we get to stand, one beside the other and enjoy our history (because that's what it is) and finally speak the truth of it with respect and honor. That's the best part.

Yes, ma'am, as I live in a Dixie Cup, I was indeed unaware of this 2006 release. Thanks for binging it to my attention! I think I'd really enjoy it. I run in slow mo myself.....

Getting away from LaGrange for a few days must have been delightful, but especially so if Bill had an opportunity for some "Cool Change" sailing on the Chesapeake Bay during this journey to Virginia.

Charlie Snead ('64) of NC gave us a good tip in today's Newsletter and he is so right, Wintley Phipps has an outstanding voice. The first time I heard this wonderful voice was in person when Wintley Phipps sang during a meeting conducted by Chuck Colson in Tampa. He blew us all away that evening.

Hi Carol.

I’m a 1969 graduate of Newport News High School, and I attended Briarfield Elementary School. Could you please add Parkview Presbyterian Church to your list of churches? I don’t remember the name of the road it was on when I first went there, but it was one block off of Marshall Avenue in the vicinity of Briarfield Manor and Warwick Gardens. Later it was moved to Roanoke Avenue, but I don’t remember what year that was. In any case, it was definitely a place of worship between 1955 and 1972. Thanks!

From My Niece, Shari, of VA - 05/05/08 - "Superb Discovery -- an opinion":

Possibly it will have the same effect on you. ( My friend) Joe (who sent this to me) is a very smart man and he phrases it so much more eloquently than my "this is cool."---LOL

I made a superb discovery yesterday. I came across and read for the first time the greatest masterpiece of depth in poetry I have ever read before. This transcends so far anything I have ever read, in depth of wisdom excellently expressed.

The meaning of some of the lines is a little hard to acquire. A few of the lines I completely fail to grasp. But this poem is meat for thought. Anything worth learning is worth hard thought.

I have never read anything before so magnificent.

The poem is "Rabbi Ben Ezra", by Robert Browning.

Shari, I almost hurt myself laughing this time! Browning's poem is indeed magnificent; I've always loved it.

But don't you remember Baba (the late Maxine Frix Buckley - John Marshall HS - '25) quoting this between gritted teeth all the time all through the last fifteen or twenty years of her life??

As in, "'Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be, The last of life, for which the first was made' HA! When I get to the other side, the first thing I'm going to do is find that Robert Browning and give him a swift upper cut to the jaw!'

The woman just didn't enjoy the aging process. In retrospect, I can't say I blame her.....

He is back at work and comes home tired, but overall, he is in pretty good shape; update of 03/24/08: last radiation treatment was Friday; "looking good and feeling pretty good except for very irritated skin and fatigue"; update of 04/05/08: "getting better each day"; update of 04/14/08: "now dealing with a blood clot in his pic line; receiving daily injections in the abdomen and taking antibiotics and blood thinners; feels pretty good in spite of everything and his ATTITUDE is great---as usual"; update of update of 04/24/08: "no longer taking daily abdominal injections for blood clot that developed a few weeks ago; everything is looking pretty good. The PET scan will be in the next few weeks. We are expecting good results." update of 05/05/08 - "scheduled for two more chemo visits; will have the first chemo on Thursday, May 8th followed up by an injection on Friday to boost his immune system.":
