05/07/08 - NNHS Newsletter - Not a Second Time
I was never one to patiently pick up broken fragments |
||
Dear
Friends and Schoolmates,
I chose today's rather obscure Beatles' song (if any Beatles'
song can be considered obscure), because it appeared on their second album,
released in the UK as With the Beatles on 11/22/63, and in the USA as
Meet the Beatles! on 01/20/64. Why are those dates significant, you
ask?!? Stay tuned for today's exciting answer.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/With_the_Beatles:
With the Beatles is The Beatles' second UK album, recorded four months after the band's first album and released on 22 November 1963.
The album features eight original compositions (including the first by George Harrison) and six covers, mostly of Motown and R&B hits. Most of the songs from the album were released in the United States as Meet the Beatles! on 20 January 1964, and the remaining that weren't, were released on their next U.S. album, The Beatles' Second Album.....
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meet_the_Beatles%21:
Meet The Beatles! is the second Beatles' album released in the United States, despite the "first album" claim on its cover. Released on 20 January 1964, it was the first Capitol Records Beatles album.....
So should anyone ever ask you, "Were you around in the Age of the Beatles?", you may answer proudly, "Yes. Yes, I was."
And for further
proof, keep reading. ![]()

From
Me ('65)
of NC - 05/06/08 -
I had a phone call from
Billy Turner
('65) of TX
today! He's been out of
touch for two or three years now, and I thought surely he must have "up
and R-U-N-N-O-F-T", but he's well and happy, still serving as Mayor of
Ovilla, TX, and said to tell you all hello.
Thanks, Billy Turner, it was great fun!
![]()
(For those of you who don't know, "Billy Turner" is all one word, just like "Charlie Brown". His friends these days call him "Bill" or "Mayor", but he's still Billy Turner to me!)

From Domi O'Brien ('64) of NH - 05/03/08 - "RE: 05/03/08 - Please-Mr-Postman":
WILDEST GIGGLES!!! Some
things never change, hmm? Thanks so much for this
wonderfully fascinating historical tidbit, Domi!

From Linda May Bond Crayton ('66) of VA - 05/03/08:
Dear Carol,
I also enjoyed the "Amazing Grace" video
Charles (Snead - '64 - of NC) sent in to us. Perhaps you are unaware that
there was a DVD movie recently put out of the very same name and subject matter.
If they had not made it so very slow, I believe it would have been a huge hit. I
can not for the life of me figure out why they make historic movies slow. Do
they think colonial people ran in slow mo? Any how, that's not even the point I
want to make. The point is that now, today, we get to stand, one beside the
other and enjoy our history (because that's what it is) and finally speak the
truth of it with respect and honor. That's the best part.
Yes, ma'am, as I live in a Dixie Cup, I was indeed unaware of this 2006 release. Thanks for binging it to my attention! I think I'd really enjoy it.

Joyce's (Lawrence Cahoon - '65 - of VA)
(Redneck Love) poem about my family history! How did she know?!!!! I
went to a shrink once and she said, "What's your problem?" I said," I think my
mother and father were brother and sister."
She said, "Welcome to America."
It's so nice to be normal.
Linda May '66
Thanks,
Linda May!

Charlie Snead ('64) of NC gave us a good tip in
today's
Newsletter and he is so right, Wintley Phipps
has an outstanding voice. The first time I heard this wonderful voice was in
person when Wintley Phipps sang during a meeting conducted by
Chuck Colson in Tampa. He blew us all away that evening.
COOL BEANS! Thanks, Adonis!

From Sherry Cain Hamilton ('69) of __ - 05/04/08 - "a church to add to your list":
Im a 1969 graduate of Newport News High School, and I attended Briarfield Elementary School. Could you please add Parkview Presbyterian Church to your list of churches? I dont remember the name of the road it was on when I first went there, but it was one block off of Marshall Avenue in the vicinity of Briarfield Manor and Warwick Gardens. Later it was moved to Roanoke Avenue, but I dont remember what year that was. In any case, it was definitely a place of worship between 1955 and 1972. Thanks!
Sherry Cain Hamilton
Thank you, Sherry!
I'm sorry if it appears I was dragging my feet on this one; I was trying to
determine what might have happened to it's congregation - whether they changed
the name, or were absorbed into another church or just disbanded. So far,
my efforts have proven fruitless. Perhaps someone else has some insights
here.
"Anyone? Anyone?"
Meanwhile, I've added it to the list in an admittedly lame condition:

Do you have a favorite hymn that you remember from your days there??

From My Niece, Shari, of VA -
05/05/08 - "Superb Discovery -- an opinion":
Shari, I almost hurt myself laughing this time!
Browning's poem is indeed magnificent; I've always
loved it.
But
don't you remember
Baba
(the late Maxine Frix Buckley - John
Marshall HS - '25) quoting this between
gritted teeth all the time all through the last fifteen or twenty years
of her life??
As in, "
'Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be, The last of life, for which the first was made' HA! When I get to the other side, the first thing I'm going to do is find that Robert Browning and give him a swift upper cut to the jaw!'The woman just didn't enjoy the aging process. In retrospect, I can't say I blame her.....
Thanks, Lady!

From
Wayne
Stokes ('65) of VA - 05/06/08 - "Battle Hymn of the
Republic":
This is an outstanding performance by grammar through high school kids. One of the fathers recorded it, added some graphic enhancements to the recording, and posted it on the web. The song, of course, is the "Battle Hymn Of The Republic."
It sends shivers up your spine, it is so fantastic!
You may want to press the "F11" key or your maximize icon after the performance starts, to get a full-screen effect. When the display is complete, simply press the key again, to return to your normal display.
Don't forget to turn on your sound! Now, click below, and enjoy!

Generally speaking, deaths which occurred between mid 2000 and early 2005 will have the person's name written in blue and underlined, indicating the obituary is already linked there.

Not a Second Time
Written by
John
Lennon (credited to
McCartney/Lennon)
(The
Beatles, August 21,
1963)
You know you made me cry,
I see no use in wond'ring why,
I cried for you.
And now, you've changed your mind,
I see no reason to change mine,
I cried, it's through, oh.
Oh, you're giving me the same old line,
I'm wond'ring why,
You hurt me then, you're back again,
No, no, not a second time.
