05/09/08 - NNHS Newsletter - Hold Me Tight
“Millions and millions of years would still not give me |
||
Dear
Friends and Schoolmates,
This is a "Part II" Newsletter if ever there was one, a
continuation of course of
Tuesday's Newsletter. This selection also appeared on the Beatles'
second album, released in the UK as With the Beatles on 11/22/63, and in
the USA as
Meet the Beatles! on 01/20/64. Today's song is even more obscure than
Tuesday's, and indeed was one of the most unpopular of their compositions - even
to them:
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hold_Me_Tight:
It was first recorded during the Please Please Me album session, but not selected for inclusion[1] and re-recorded for their second album. It was the first of only two occasions when a song title was held over from one Beatles album to appear on the next, "Wait" (left off Help! then included on Rubber Soul) being the other.[2]
"Hold Me Tight" was composed principally by McCartney in 1961, and was part of The Beatles stage act until 1963.[3][4] In their best-selling The Beatles: An Illustrated Record, Roy Carr and Tony Tyler call it the album's poorest track, saying it "fails because McCartney's vision of the complete tune obviously sagged somewhat, and his distressingly out-of-tune singing became quite embarrassing after only a few bars."[5]
Indeed, both
Paul McCartney and
John
Lennon had, at one time or another, shared their distaste for the song, and
in a 1980s interview with
Mark
Lewisohn in The Beatles Recording Sessions, McCartney says, "I can't
remember much about that one. Certain songs were just 'work' songs, you haven't
got much memory of them.
So why did I choose this particular song, you may ask? Because
isn't rescuing things from obscurity what we do here?? ![]()

From
Buz Groshong ('63) of Northern VA - 05/05/08 - "Stranger

Wayne Gilman's ('63 - of IN), and although he was a very good
musician, I doubt that it was him. My guess would be Bernie Spivak
('63). I heard him play Petite Fleur, which had only been out a few
weeks at the time. He could hear a tune a few times and then just play
it; he didn't need sheet music.http://www.arcomnet.com/about/employee_profiles_groshong.php

From Sheila Smith Moler ('64) of FL - 05/08/08 - "Parkview Presbyterian Church":
Carol:
The church was located at the corner of Temple Lane and Ellen Road. Lots of kids went there during the fifties and sixties. Youth Group on Sunday nites, choir practice on Wednesday nites, Halloween parties after trick-or-treating for UNICEF, Christmas plays, etc., covered dish suppers, and Vacation Bible School was always great. That building was sold sometime between '65 and '70 and the new one built on (I think) Chestnut Avenue. I'm guessing it was the '80's when it went defunct from lack of congregation. Rev. Smith was best-loved by all the kids, Rev. MacLeod was the last minister that I remember. I'm sure you'll get more responses & memories--tons of kids from Briarfied Manor, Warwick Gardens, Betsy Lee Gardens & Sussex Hilton were all within walking distance.

From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 05/08/08 - "Stuart
Gardens":
| You must
have known that placing a 1960 image of Stuart Gardens in
the Newsletter would
cause me to go out and get the 2008 image. ..... I popped over to Stuart Gardens, found the location, and got the shot. The address of the apartment (not visible) at the right margin is 1354 Roanoke Avenue..... Like 1960, you can see just barely see the sidewalk leading to the entrance just where the sidewalk begins to curve, which does indeed face 16th Street. |

David,
you sweet, adorable man!
No, actually, I had no idea that you would risk your
life and limb by venturing into Stuart Gardens - even in the broad
daylight! The last time I tried that, gunshots broke out - and that was
nearly five years ago! Thank you so very much; it's a fascinating shot!
The irony is that the apartments are actually more attractive now than
they were back then....

Allen Groshong had one error: he received a silver star rather than a bronze
star.....YIKESARONI-ROONI!!! And it's been listed incorrectly for at least four years and probably more than seven.....
I am so sorry, Buz!
Thank you so much; I've corrected it now.

Hold
Me Tight
Written principally by
Paul McCartney (credited to
McCartney/Lennon)
(The
Beatles, November 22,
1963)
It feels so right now, hold me tight,
Tell me I'm the only one,
And then I might,
Never be the lonely one.
So hold me tight, to-night, to-night,
It's you, you you you - oo-oo - oo-oo.
Hold me tight,
Let me go on loving you,
To-night to-night,
Making love to only you,
So hold me tight, to-night, to-night,
It's you, you you you - oo-oo - oo-oo.
Don't know what it means to hold you tight,
Being here alone tonight with you,
It feels so right now, feels so right now.
Hold me tight,
Tell me I'm the only one,
And then I might,
Never be the only one,
So hold me tight, to-night, to-night,
It's you, you you you - oo-oo - oo-oo.
Don't know what it means to hold you tight,
Being here alone tonight with you,
It feels so right now, feels so right now.
Hold me tight,
Let me go on loving you,
To-night, to-night,
Making love to only you,
So hold me tight, to-night, to-night,
It's you, you you you - oo-oo - oo-oo
You oo-oo
