07/01/04 - NNHS Newsletter - Good News, Bad News
Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
I'm not
certain how we've accumulated SOOO much news in four short days, and chances are
I'm already
hopelessly lost, but I'll give it a shot anyway, because - well, BECAUSE!

I'll just start
with the first item now, and save the rest for the next Newsletter.

Yes, this page on
which everyone has (surprisingly or otherwise!) found their name is NOT
functional
except through me, because I am a colossal power freak. Oh, no - that's
not it! No, the REAL reason,
is that while many of you have given permission to be openly contacted by one
and all, a sizable number
of you have not. To simplify matters, I protect everyone's privacy by guarding
their emails in a separate file.
Should you wish to contact them, write me, I'll pas your note on to
them, they'll write you back, and so forth.
Two exceptions to this rule are members of the Class of '65, whose
addy's are here:

and a few teachers, whose email
addresses are found near the top of their individual pages.
You will note that SOME of the names on the Alumni List do link,
but they go to personal or professional
web sites pertaining to that individual. In some cases, you will be able

Dave (Arnold - '65) and I have been in Williamsburg a whole week - I
think I must be in heaven. I was
just never a Midwesterner (but I tried for 29 years) - were you? People actually
smile and speak here.
And - they don't look at me like I have two heads if I don't know them and speak
to them. As my
good friend Patsy (Blackard Hallett -'65 of VA) says: God made the
Mason-Dixon line for a reason!
I'll be sending you a check. Been meaning to do it for awhile but with finishing
school, my older son's
graduation,....., selling a house and moving, I just haven't. I apologize.
I plan to come to see my daughter in a few weeks and I will be coming to see you
if I may.
Thanks for all your hard work. I owe you my husband!!!

honey, you may have noticed, but I'm a weirdo. People always look at me as
though I have two heads.
There are those who think I'm an alien. I spent 30 years in various
locations up and down the Mississippi River
in southeast MO and mid-IL and never fit in. It really doesn't seem to
matter where I go. When I came home
to VA after an absence of several years for my dear mama's funeral in Feb of
1999, I myself was extremely ill
and probably should have been hospitalized, and obviously in deep mourning, yet
I did not encounter a single
relative who within moments did not remark, "Carol, you are still crazy!"
- as though they had just unlocked the
Secrets of the Universe. I was finally moved to ask my sister, Eleanor
(Buckley Nowitzky -'59 of NC), if it was
possible that I was adopted, as I didn't even seem to fit in with my closest
blood relatives. She assured me that
I was not. To paraphrase Dr. Seuss, "I do not fit in here or there, I do
not fit in anywhere." Sigh.
But I must confess, I really love hearing people speak Southern
again. One of my favorite little thrills when
I first arrived in NC in early 2002 was listening to the radio, and hearing the
announcer say, "Sairday" - that
being the day before Sunday. And if I don't fit in anywhere, I'd rather
not fit in here in the South than someplace
else.
And thanks so much for the check, Pam - it arrived yesterday and
was greatly appreciated.
And we are WILDLY looking forward to your visit to Fayetteville!

I'm glad I was able to be instrumental in reconnecting you and Dave.

As I told him, "You keep saying the funniest things! Let’s see,
you’re doing all the research, you’re finding the obscure,

expertise…Yeah, it is mighty thoughtful of us to take
advantage of all that, isn’t it?!?"
Secondly, I marvel at the way he glossed completely over the fact
that I was being bratty (Who? ME?!?) and said that
there would be no "Famous Airmen" page. His magnanimity has caused me to
repent. Okay, I'll make a "Famous Airmen"
page. Start sending me the names and images. Remember the rules: All
images posted of all military personnel must be
in uniform - except Marines. Marines can appear anyway they are at all.
WILD Giggles!
All right, all ready - "Up We Go into...."
And THEN we'll start on the other Uniformed Services.
Keep working with me, Joe. I may just grow up yet.

FYI – Reference your page on Trinity United Methodist Church –
The center image under the
THEN heading is labeled “about 1963”. This has to be in error. The reason that
I say this
is that the brick chapel shown on the right side of the photo was dedicated in
mid 1966.
The line drawing on the left
side of the page is currently used as the front image on the church bulletin.
It also shows
the chapel as it is today. This image is labeled “1960’s” which is correct for
the later half of the 1960’s.
Also, the church’s web site is up and running. It may not be as “kept-up-to-date” as it should, but it is up.

I've not heard from Joyce in some time.
Even with the new system of mailing which Ron Miller ('59) of NC suggested,
bless his heart, I'm never sure who is or is
not getting my notifications, especially AOL users such as Joyce. I
routinely am notified that people are being blocked
when I know good and well that they are not. Conversely, I'm sure that
there are those with whom I think I'm in contact
that I really am not. Feedback is my only clue - so y'all write me!

And Happy Belated Birthday, Glenn! Unlike you, I plan for my birthdays to
be getting to be bigger and better celebrations
each year. Yes. Better food, bigger presents, more people, singing,
dancing. Yes. My 57th birthday is coming up on
August 30. I'd like something fun - say, a parade in my honor. Yes.
Of course, to use a Midwestern idiomatic expression,
