Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
|
My great-grandmother, Barbara Anne Eliza Warlick Payne of NC,
was a feisty little woman used to routinely spout proverbs and aphorisms.
It sounded as though she was imparting of her great wisdom to those around
her, which was true to a degree; she was well-known for the good advice she
gave. Upon closer examination, however, it was obvious that what Annie
was doing was figuratively hanging little notes to herself in the air,
hoping that she could more completely incorporate them in her own life: "Kindness is to do and say the kindest thing in the kindest way." "You'll catch more flies with honey than with vinegar." "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." "If you'll clean up, you'll find things." |

Just been catching up on some back issues
(been remodeling and getting Dad moved in with us).
I noticed that your son
(Dale Harty - American School - IL - '02)
will be attending
Southern Virginia University
in Buena Vista. It's a very beautiful school,
located high on a ridge above the town. The people there are very
"down-home" folks, and friendly. I think he'll like it.
For the "small world department": that's my Dad's
hometown -- and, we're heading there
this weekend (7/28-30) for our annual family reunion!
I love small world stories, Ronnie! And now for the rest of the story. Long before it became Southern Virginia University, that property - and its buildings - was known as Southern Seminary, founded in 1900: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Virginia_University

From Christine Wilson Starkman ('68) of CA - 07/26/06 - "Cowboys":
|
Hi Carol!
I loved
John London's
(Warwick HS - '57 - of VA)
memoir
of being a little buckaroo. I'm sad for the little boy whose hero
disappointed him (as heroes sometimes do) but who remained faithful to the
cowboy code. I don't remember Lash LaRue, but I have many hours
logged watching Roy and Dale defend truth, justice, and the Cowboy
(and Girl) Way.
In 1955, at age 4-1/2) I had the great
privilege of naming my new baby sister. My mother had chosen Rebecca (her
mother's name) as a middle name. But with four children, she had run out
of ideas--or the energy--to come up with a first name. I had no problem,
however, and became the very proud big sister of Dale Rebecca Wilson!
(John might enjoy the work of another
Lash LaRue fan, novelist Edward Wright. His first novel,
Clea's Moon, chronicles the adventures of ex-Hollywood cowboy
John Ray Horn, on the wild frontier of 1940's Los Angeles, and is
dedicated to Wright's favorite Hollywood cowboy, Lash LaRue.)
I wonder if those of us who traded our
cowboy heroes for rock stars and politicians are ready to return to those
thrilling days of yesteryear...
Typhoons Forever,
Chris

From
John London (Warwick HS - '57) of
VA
- 07/26/06 - Doctor Nowell Nelms":
|
Well Carol, I got
this one more anecdote for ya, and then (you'll be glad to know) I'll give
it a rest for awhile.
NONSENSE,
John! We
thrive on anecdotes!
Also, please to tell
Yessir! Oh, Linda May........ At the age of six (1945) I was excited about just having started first grade. But after only a few school days I got up one morning and my scrawny legs wouldn't work. At least not well. Pain in both knees. Well, it made me angry and I threw a fit cause I really wanted to go to school (I was very young). My family at the time lived at 1419 24th Street in Newport News. We were fortunate to have Doctor Nowell Nelms as our family physician and he diagnosed Rheumatic Fever brought on by a strep infection that I had had and everyone thought was cured. I was always falling into any available body of water more than a few inches deep and got the strep from an accidental dive into chilly Indian Creek and swallowing a pint of water not so pure as when the Indians had it - but I digress. I can recall Janie Penn (whose family owned Penn's Luggage in NN) bringing me my 'homework' from first grade and carrying back to Magruder School* my completed (crayola art) assignments. I can also remember overhearing Doc Nelms tell my parents that my chances of living to see twenty-one were slim due to mitral valve damage that had occurred. RF back in those days was often a death sentence for children and the preferred treatment was sulfa-drugs. Months went by and I can't be sure of the timing, but Dr. Nelms arrived on one of his regular house calls with news of a new medicine. Seems there was recently made available in the US in sufficient quantity a 'miracle drug' that had been used in England, and to treat troops of the D-day invasion, with astounding success. The drug was Penicillin, and the good doctor started me on it that day, and that was the first day of my long, steady recovery over the following months. Fast forward to the early sixties when Andrea** and I had returned to the peninsula and lived on Chesapeake Avenue, near LaSalle in Hampton. It was Doctor Nelms that diagnosed Andrea as ''with-child' in his Kecoughtan office. Whenever I accompanied her to his office for follow-up he always sent his nurse out to the waiting room to fetch me. When I arrived he would say; "Get in here young man, pull up your shirt so I can check out your 'ticker.' He sometimes paid more attention to me than to Andrea. I think that he and I both understood that he (and mold) had literally saved my life.
I have known
outstanding men in my lifetime but none more deserving to be included in
Tom Brokaw's "Greatest Generation" than Nowell D. Nelms. It was abundantly
clear that Doc Nelms loved people and they loved him back. He was a caring
man, dedicated to healing, and he did it with great skill, compassion, and
a touch of humor.
I will be ever
grateful for his care and caring.
John London * The Magruder school that I attended was I think much older than the one that has been discussed here before. It was an gothic-looking red-brick building, ancient even back in the mid 40's. ** Andrea is my squaw of WAY MUCH years. <said with a grin, and the hope that she never sees this lest I not live to see another lovely Virginia Sunrise> Well, Linda May, I hope
that you enjoyed this one as much as I did! Like
Thanks so much, John! I'm certainly glad it had such a happy outcome! I certainly concur with your description of Doctor Nelms. He was one in a million. I've posted your comments here: http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/our-physicians-and-dentists.html |

Was a real masterpiece...so much fun reading
about all the animals and their escapades. I don't remember if I told you
this one or not. When our son was about 18 months old we were living in a
house with a deck on the back. There were woods behind our house. We
kept our empty wine bottles on the deck until we took them to the trash
compactor (in our small town you haul your own trash or pay for someone
else to do it!). At any rate, one night we heard a great ruckus on the
deck and when we turned on the porch light a raccoon had a wine bottle
upturned at his mouth and was seeking "the last drop"! We woke up our
little son so that he could see it because the raccoon was not the least
bit bothered by the light or us looking! Too bad we did not have the
camera handy!
Our good friends went to her mother's in New
Jersey for Christmas. Her sister and husband had brought a large dog with
them. On Christmas Eve, her mother put a huge beef tenderloin in a
plastic bag with marinade and off they went to church...you guessed it!
When they got home "Duffy" had eaten the entire tenderloin! Her mother
was not amused! And to top it off, her husband and brother-in-law had to
go out and find a turkey on Christmas Eve!!! (They found one...her mother
was not over it FOR A LONG TIME!) And Duffy, who was confined to their
bedroom for the night, had LOTS OF GAS!!! I just howl every time I think
about it!!!
ARGHHHHH!!!
Thanks, Lady!

| The Bathtub Test
It doesn't hurt to take a hard look at yourself from time to time, and this should help get you started. During a visit to the mental asylum, a visitor asked the Director what the criterion was which defined whether or not a patient should be institutionalized. "Well," said the Director, "we fill up a bathtub, then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the patient and ask him or her to empty the bathtub." "Oh, I understand," said the visitor. "A normal person would use the bucket because it's bigger than the spoon or the teacup." "No." said the Director, "A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want a bed near the window?" DID YOU PASS, OR DO YOU WANT THE BED NEXT TO MINE?

A Little Less Talk
Words and Music by Toby Keith and Jim Femino
(Toby
Keith,
1993)
(b. 8 July 1961)
I was getting kinda tired of her
endless chatter
Nothing I could say ever seemed to matter
So I took a little drive just to clear my head
I saw a flashing neon up ahead
It looked like a place to find some satisfaction
With a little less talk and a lot more action
I paid the man at the door and pushed my way to the bar
Shouted for a drink over a screaming guitar
A drunk on a stool tried to mess with my head
But I didn't even listen to a word he said
I knew somewhere amid all this distraction
Was a little less talk and a lot more action
A little less talk if you please
A lot more loving is what I need
Let's get on down to the main attraction
With a little less talk and a lot more action
Well she was fighting them off at a corner table
She had a longneck bottle she was peeling the label
The look on her face it was perfectly clear
She said somebody please get me out of here
The look she shot me through the glass refraction
Said a little less talk and a lot more action
A little less talk if you please
A lot more loving is what I need
Let's get on down to the main attraction
With a little less talk and a lot more action
A little less talk
A lot more loving
Let's get on down to the main attraction
With a little less talk and a lot more action
Get on down to the main attraction
With a little less talk and a lot more action
