08/19/04 - NNHS Newsletter - A Bit of Everything, Part II
Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
Happy
Birthday to Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA and Jim DeBerry ('64) of VA!
They were born in Riverside Hospital
58 years ago today while their fathers paced the halls together. And we're
all glad that you were!

From Susan Whitcomb Harlin ('72) of TX - 08/18/04:
Hi Carol,
I think I did it!!! I think I'm 25,000. I'm here on J.B.'s computer.
I think you did too, Susan! Congratulations! I'll have to get to the post office soon to mail your prizes, hmmm?

From Me ('65) of NC - 08/18/03:
I think that I was in
such a hurry yesterday to post
that Newsletter, that I omitted at least half of
the hyperlinks
which I had meant to include. If you read it before 6:04 PM last night,
you may wish to take another look for greater
clarity. Sorry!

From Tom Norris (HHS - '73) of VA - 08/15/04 and 08/18/04:
Carol
.... picked up two new NNHS collectibles ... June '36 Beacon yearbook
and a 1937 football program from NN vs Petersburg!
Scans are coming ... I promise :-)
Plus ....
just got the WGH Authentic Virginia Gold album that I bought off of eBay as well
....
hearing Bob Marshall and The Crystals do "She Shot a Hole In My Soul" and Aaron
Neville sing
"Tell It Like It Is" takes me back to the summer of '69! I feel like shaggin',
slow dancin' and makin'
out. Whew .... can't wait to burn it to CD and play it while cruisin' in the
Vette :-)
See ya ...
Tom
WILD GIGGLES!!! Super! You found some good stuff there! I'm looking
forward to your scans - thanks, Tom! And best wishes
to you and your waaaay cool Corvette! Yep, you Da Babe, all right!

From Renee Helterbran Benton ('59) of VA - 06/16/04:
This is soooo neat, Renee! What a treasure! I gave it its own page on "Odds and Ends":
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/oddsends.html
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/side-by-side.html
While you're in "Odds and Ends", take another look at this, 'cause they're just so darn cute!

And I added your names to the Birthday Page:

Thanks, Renee!

From Jean Poole Burton ('64) of RI - 08/16/04:
Hi Carol,
I came down to NN for my mother's 82nd birthday, drove in rain on Thursday, had
a great reunion
with Elizabeth Tedder Nunnally on Friday night (we stayed at the Crab
Shack talking so late that I got
in trouble with my mother, who was about to call the police...I got in at
10:45!) Anyway we had not seen
each other in about 40+ years...My mother, who has cancer, was great on Sunday,
we went to church and
out to lunch and had company in the afternoon. Such a blessing to be here for
her birthday. She is doing
well and we are planning to be here for Christmas as well. I will return to
Yankeeland on Thurs. if we do
not have any more torrential rain! By the way, I found three pictures of the
"black bomber", which was
"my" first car...and
will send them to Dave for scanning...for the site! So much fun seeing
Elizabeth...we
were partners in crime...and her mother is living at her house, so I hope to get
to see her during some
future visit to the peninsula.
Love, Jean
Glad to hear your mother is doing
well and had a nice birthday, Jean! I love the part about her going to
call the police! What's
a mere forty years to a mother?!? HA-HA-HA-HA! See, Guys? Some
things never change at all!!!
We're really looking forward to your images of the "black bomber"! Thanks, Jean!

From Cookie Phillips Tyndall ('64) of VA - 0818/04:
Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in their newsletters.
This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
Dioxin Carcinogens cause cancer. Especially breast cancer. Don't freeze plastic water bottles with water in them as this also releases dioxin from the plastic. Dr. Edward Fujimoto from Castle hospital was on a TV program explaining this health hazard. (He is the manager of the Wellness Program at the hospital.) He was talking about dioxins and how bad they are for us.
He said we should not heat our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This applies particularly to foods that contain fat. He said that the combination of fat, high heat and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body Dioxin are carcinogens and highly toxic to the cells of our bodies. Instead, he recommends using glass, Corning Ware, or ceramic containers for heating food. You get the same results ..without the dioxin.
So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. Just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc.
Remember when some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper? The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.
To add to this: Saran wrap placed over foods as they are nuked, with the high heat, actually drips poisonous toxins into the food, use paper towels instead!! (This one is a BIG surprise to me. TM)
Please pass this on to your family & friends, & those who are important in your life.
WOW - thanks, Cookie!
I knew some of this, but not all! You've done your good deed for the day!

From Kathleen Pilgrim Clark ('63) of VA - 08/18/04:
WOWZERS - thanks, Kathy!!!

From Jo Ann Stewart ('64) of TX - 08/18/04:
Hi Carol-regarding the movie filmed
at the Blue Star
- can't remember the name either but I believe it
starred Isabella Rossellini.
From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 08/18/04:
From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 08/18/04:
There was a film starring Isabella which was filmed in
Gloucester in 1988. That would have provided
an opportunity to film in a period diner, such as Blue Star.
It was "Zelly and Me".
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096501/
I saw it long ago, so I cannot recall if Blue Star was in it. Will hafta
rent it.
I do recall that one of the three folks in the ubiquitous Haynes' Furniture
advertisements had a bit part.
He is Dwayne, the goofy
one, in those ads.

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 08/18/04:
Oh, my goodness, Major Madagan! What were we thinking?!? These
omissions are truly unconscionable! My cheeks
are burning! I'll go add them this morning. I apologize to you all
for this oversight. The obvious has long been lost on me
in my pursuit of the obscure. Thanks so much, Joe!

From Rochelle Spooner ('63) of NY - 08/18/04:
Hi Y'all,
Who's coming from the class of '63 to the
reunion?
Hope lots. I want to if I'm in town My very best to all.
Hey, Rochelle! We know several are planning to come, but those who have
"officially" committed - that is, those who have
actually paid their money, are all listed here:
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/reunion2004-attending.html
As you see, at the moment, from the Class of '63 only Susie Overton Jones of VA has definitely committed.
From Janice
McCain Rose ('65) of VA - 08/18/04:
We don't know yet if we'll be able to
attend.......we're hoping to......at least ONE of
the nights.....and I will make the arrangements before time runs out........
Thanks, Janice! We'll see you there!
Hmmmm......I'm starting to think I haven't made myself clear on this subject.
I'm sorely
afraid that many of you are going to come back to me in the days following the
reunion,
and say, "WHAT?!? I didn't know THAT was going to happen! If I had
known that THAT
was going to be there and that THAT was going to happen, then surely I would
have come!"
As
my dear mama used to say, "I've done everything but stand on my head and wiggle
my ears." TRUST ME!
THAT IS
going to happen!!! You
WILL want to be there!
The meaning of the word
"SURPRISE" will be redefined by
this whole event!
Don't kick
yourself later. Plan now to be there for every precious memorable moment.
I can assure you,
you will not regret it. This applies just as much for those of you from
the Classes of '55
through '72 as it does from '64!!! As wonderful as they all are, this is
not just a regular class
reunion. This one is different - amazingly different. Dream big ---
use your imagination -
read
it all again - and you'll still be blown away by the reality that awaits you
there.
Do
not be deceived by thinking you won't know anyone there. That is simply
irrelevant.
It just doesn't matter. Just be there - for ALL of it.

Speaking of which,
Billy Turner ('65)
of TX seems to think that I won't be able to dance in my 3-1/2" heels
without throwing my back out. Oh, Billy Turner! How can you even
think such a thing?!? I can, I will, and there's
just one way you'll ever know for sure! See you there on Saturday night
(I'll be wearing Bass Weejuns on Friday
night for old-time sake. I'm not sure about the wrap-around skirt yet, but
the Weejuns are good to go!)!!!

From Me ('65) in NC - 08/17/04:
This wonderful quotation of Pam's is now at the top of the Reunion Page:
|
I think the joy of going to a class reunion is that EVERYONE really knows how old you are and you don't have to try to pretend a thing. The other interesting phenomenon
that I have experienced is Where else can you go and have 35
years shed? Can't wait to see everyone!!! |
|
- Pam (Smith) Tomczyk ('65) of IL
- 09/08/00 {now Pam Smith Arnold ('65) of VA} just prior to 1965's 35th Reunion of October 27/28, 2000 |
|
08/17/04 Thanks, Pam! I've reflected on your words so many times in the past four years. I'm so glad that I saved them! |

From Craig Miller ('63) of FL - 08/18/04:
WOW! That IS quite a challenge, Craig! I've added all that to the Prayer Request page. Thanks!

From Jimmy Dick ('65) of FL - 08/18/04:
We were very lucky and
Charley turned in toward the
coast about one hundred miles south of where
originally expected. I feel sorry for those poor folks
in Punta Gorda but am thankful that we in North
Central Florida got through unscathed. My company is
sending trucks down there all week for cleanup, they
need all the help they can get. Say a prayer for the
folks in Southwest Fl. And I certainly enjoy the
newsletters.
Jim
Thanks for getting back with us, Jimmy! I posted your remarks:
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/Charley.html
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/requests-prayers.html
And I'm glad that you're enjoying the Newsletters!
From Jean Pittman Priest ('64) of Kissimmee, FL - 08/19/04:

The prayer requests are really picking up now. Did y'all just not notice that page there before?
Actually, there are a couple of things placed around on various pages which I
think no one ever spotted, as they should
have provoked some type of comment. There's one such item on one of the
pages on Our Old
Stomping Grounds,
for instance. Dave and I thought it quite funny, but nary a chuckle
arose... Sniff, sniff......

From Thelma Spade Roberts ('57) of VA - 08/17/04:
I would like to add the
names of two of my classmates to your prayer list,
and request that all who
read
my posting, say additional prayers for these
two wonderful members of NNHS
Class of 1957: Michael
Spangler and
Adrienne Price Cox. Both are dealing with serious health issues
and need
all of our support
and prayers just now.
I’m so sorry to learn that Adrienne and Michael are ill. I added their names:
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/requests-prayers.html
Thanks for all your help, Thelma. We’ll keep them in our prayers.
From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 08/18/04:
By all
the glowing reports I've received, Thelma has done an amazing job of keeping the
Class of '57 unified,
bonded, and informed - as have Jimmy Parker and Brenda Amos Williams for the
Class of '62, and Dee Hodges
Bartram for the Class of '66. Y'all have been richly blessed to have them.
Thanks, Joe! I'm so glad you sent your friend, Adrienne, a note.
I enjoy
this quotation so much, I attached it to the
Alumni Page.
You are a master of this principle, and in fact,
exemplify it, but the rest of us might benefit from a little nudge. It
never hurts to be reminded, as it's so poignant:
"You have it
easily in your power to increase the sum total of this world's happiness now.
How?
By giving a few words of sincere appreciation to someone who is lonely or
discouraged."
-- Dale
Carnegie
(1888 - 1955)
Y'all take care of each other..
Love to all, Carol
