   Today's theme comes as a surprise - to all of us, especially me.....  This song has a catchy tune, but I've always passionately disliked the lyrics - well, beginning with the fourth line, anyway.  Actually, I think that's why I find it so annoying - it begins so happily, and then turns so selfish.  Yes, I am a Pollyanna.  I like fairy tale endings.  This is not my idea of a happy ending.  In fact, it makes me want to throw something.

   In fact, the number of hits on the site yesterday were more than double the number of daily hits we've been averaging all summer.  On my personal website, that number rose to five times the summer's daily average.  I wonder if this next subject had anything at all to do with that?!?

   And I took care to monitor the content so that it would stay that way.

   And then there was Thursday morning.  Sigh.

   I was so tired when I was finally ready to release that Newsletter announcement, it wasn't until after I hit that "Send" button that I saw (amid my futile shrieks of, "NOOOO, STOP!!!!!") that my typing finger had missed that oh-so-critical "r" in Mr. Crum's name.....

   I sent that rushed "apology" of sorts two minutes later, and left my computer room for several hours:

          HORRIBLE EMBARRASSING TYPO!  Would somebody please just shoot me now???

   I had hoped to just ignore it and pretend the whole thing never happened.  But the outpouring of response was simply too great.  So reluctantly, I'm sharing these classic responses with you.

I am tho confuthed (blushing again) and apologetic. Here's more work for you. The photo of the trombone trio forwarded a few days ago was probably taken May 28, 1959, not 1960 as originally claimed. Historians (recovering from strokes associated with cardiovascular events) should know better than to jump to conclusions.

 

   WHAT?!? You hadn't mentioned strokes before, had you?!? YOWZERONI!!! But you look cute when you blush, anyway.....

 

A discovery in my basement “archives” reveals the official program for the 1959 Annual Spring Concert by the NNHS Music Department and it includes the listing of  “Trombero” by Frank Cofield, with the players listed in order: “    Bill Gruver (’62),   Bill Prillaman (’60) and   Norman Covert (’61).” The picture being stored in my ’60 Anchor fooled me. I did not receive a ’59 Anchor, having been transferred from Warwick High School in February and probably stuck it in there for safe keeping.

The same musicians, however, would have been in the same positions on stage in 1959, except that Bill Gruver was in the "Solo Chair" (that week anyway) and we three traded chairs a lot in the ’59-’60 school year. The 1960 program would help my dilemma.

 

The program fortuitously lists each member of the band -- as well as the chorus, then directed by  Virginia Lapides, who had replaced the long-time Typhoon Chorister    Eleanor Sherman.

 

As a means of seeking forgiveness, I also found the 1955 and 1956 programs for Russell Girt’s Junior Band and offer them. Mr. Girt was also elementary school band instructor at John W. Daniel across the street. He received permission for me to play with the Junior Band during my 5th and 6th grade years. My 6th Grade Teacher, Miss Saunders, thought my time would have been better spent catching up on arithmetic (I’m still behind). Then-Miss Ellena Armistead, my 7th Grade mentor, reluctantly allowed my leaving early, too.

We played the ’55 concert at the Walter Reed Elementary School Auditorium and the ’56 concert in the brand new NNHS auditorium. We rehearsed in the old Band Room on the 32^nd Street wing in 1955. At the time I was in awe being in that musty, cramped room. I’m not sure what replaced it after the new construction in 1954-55 which gave us the huge, airy band room overlooking Saunders Stadium.

Hi, Carol:

We are both "Just so much road kill on the high tech highway" kid.

When you Phat Phingered Mr. Crum's name recently, it was mild compared to my lack of attention when I entered a comment online at The Daily Press obituary for Mr. Crum. For some unknown reason, I added an afterthought for my classmate Dr. Blaine Cecil Crum, III ('57) of AL. I meant to say Uncle, but keyed in Father instead.

Instead of concentrating on the subject, my mind morphed back to Blaine firing up on a manual typewriter in Mrs. Jean W. Clift's typing class. The man could make that thing fly, with the little bell ringing every few seconds warning him to return the carriage, so much so that it was distracting to those around him.

  Elaine Bracken Wilkinson ('61) of VA was sure kind to Eva, by not revealing her age in her recent lovely comment about Sealed With A Kiss. It has been Forty-Eleven Years, not Forty Years! Sweet!!!

Speaking of SWAK, my Parris Island buddy, Sergeant Major James A. Morris USMC (Ret) reminded me that his lovely wife Betty, when they were dating in Boston, mailed him a letter at Parris Island after his pleas not to place lipstick or SWAK on his letters. We had witnessed enough punishment for such an offense at mail call, so what does she do? She loaded up lipstick and put a big smacker on a letter going to PVT Morris. That was not enough, she placed a dotted line around it, and wrote "Eat Along The Dotted Line" to be sure our Drill Instructor would not overlook it. You know what happened, but they have been married for Forty-Eleven years now. I may have to nominate him for your Famous Marine page, since he survived the 67 day siege at Khe Sanh in 1968.

  Sepi Dinwiddie Prichard ('58) of NC sure stirred memories of Thomas Jefferson Elementary School. It is my hope to secure a photo image of the old red brick three story structure for your Website. I am going to corner Betty Lee Heath Ford ('57) of VA during our upcoming Reunion for a copy of some of her photos of this old building now long in the dustbin of history.

I think there is sufficient Grace for our errors, so don't give it another thought, unless    Bill Black ('66 - of GA) persists on harassing you...for he surely will not let this one pass without a humorous remark or two.
