08/25/04 - NNHS Newsletter - Wednesday Morning
Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
Unbelievable as
it seems, I still have not finished processing all the things that Joe Madagan ('57) of FL
sent me
over the weekend, and now Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA has sent me a like
number of wondrous goodies as well.
Strangely, I am making headway all the same, but my work still remains cut out for me.
But first, a little history lesson for all you who've joined us lately and who have never heard this story.
I never in my wildest imaginings set out to make either a web page or a Newsletter.
In the summer of
2000, I was living in IL. We still had the five youngest of our seven
children with us then. One day
I was homesick for Virginia, and searching the internet for information about
Newport News. I stumbled across
Brenda Amos Williams' web page for the Class of 1962:
http://geocities.com/typhoonmom1/
I was delighted, and started yelling, "Hey, they have a WEB PAGE!"
My fifth son,
Nathaniel (who was 20 at the time, and a computer whiz), said, "Why don't you
make a web page
for your class?"
At this time, I
could just barely handle email, so I shot him a funny look, and kept reading.
Then I discovered
Fred Eubank's web page for the Class of '64:
http://members.fortunecity.com/nnhs64/
(You can always find these pages here: http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/classes.html )
I yelled even louder, "Hey, '64 has a web page too! Why don't WE have a web page?!?
Nathaniel calmly said, "Aw quit your whining, Mom, and start your own page. Here, I'll get you started."
This was so
ludicrous on so many levels it wasn't even a possibility, but I thought I'd
better humor the poor thing
as he was obviously delusional. So he started setting it up at my
direction, we found a core group of maybe twenty
members of the Class of 1965, and from there it just grew and grew.
When I was
miraculously able to fly out for my Reunion in 2000, I received so many
compliments on the page
I felt guilty, and came home and begged Nathaniel and his younger brother, Dale,
to teach me how to do build and
operate a web page. So they did. And it grew and it grew and it
grew.
Nathaniel jokingly (I hope!) says it was the worst mistake he ever made in his life, because he created a monster.
I am forever
grateful to him for the unspeakable joy he brought into my life. So that's
how the page began - we owe
it all to Nathaniel and Dale.
So much for the history lesson; now for the favor.
Nathaniel is
finishing his degree in computer sumpin' or other at Southern Illinois
University in Edwardsville. He met
a guy there named Jamie Morgan, and on 08/14/04, they hosted a trial radio show
- which I personally thought was great.
Well, let him tell you:
From my #5 son, Nathaniel Harty, of IL - 08/23/04:
Please go to this website and vote for me to win the
"Talk Show Survivor" contest. On this site you can
listen to a clip from the show as well as the competition (On second thought,
don't listen to the competition,
and just vote for us, hehe). The winner of this contest will have their own show
for one month and could
ultimately get their own radio talk show spot and get PAID.
Just go to the web address below, scroll down to the bottom of the page, and
vote for the "Jamie Mo Show."

Thanks
Jamie and Nathaniel
Nathaniel is the guy with the deep baritone voice who keeps saying, "Right" - HA-HA-HA!
Thanks, y'all!

NOTES:
From Pam Smith Arnold ('65) of VA - 08/23/04:
I'll be most happy and
pleased to be your and Eleanor's cousin. I don't have much family left,
so I'll be glad to add wherever I can! BTW, not only is Nancy (Bigger)
Alligood ('56 of VA)
my cousin, but so is Sherry Padgett ('56). Nancy will tell me how to get
in touch with her
and a few others, I hope.
Fabulous! Thanks, Cousin Pam!

AOL WOES:
#1 - From Linda Lane Lane ('64) of VA - 08/24/04:
#2 - From Nancy Bigger Alligood ('56) of VA - 08/24/04:
The deal is that AOL
and their spam filters hate me. They ALWAYS inform me that NONE
of my notes have made it through to ANY of my AOL subscribers. Sometimes
that’s true;
sometimes it is not. This letter probably won’t reach you either.
You might try telling them that I-R-Not-Spam and not to block me.
I don’t know nuffin’ ‘bout AOL, Miss Scarlet!
The good news is that you can always access the Newsletters:
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/NNHS-Newsletters.html
And you can figure there will probably be one every other day
or so,
so there will always be something there for you.
Hope this helps, Ladies! Thanks for all your kind
remarks! Linda, have a great trip with your babies,
and
STAY HEALTHY!!! Nancy, I'm so glad you and Pam had such a great time
yesterday!
Reply #1 - From Linda Lane Lane ('64)
of VA - 08/24/04:
Super! Thanks,
Linda!
Reply #2 - From Nancy Bigger Alligood
('56) of VA - 08/24/04:
Super-Duper! Thanks, Nancy!

From Cookie Phillips Tyndall ('64) of VA - 08/24/04:
Having been a ardent partaker of
What-a-Burger, I must protest.
That
picture looks nothing like the what-a-burger I knew. Sorry Dave or was it
you Carol? That looks like a Burger King. HA. Actually, it is deja vu, my
oldest son and his wife like What-a-Burger. I recently went there with them
but must admit, I don't think it is as good as in '64.
Giggles! Thanks, Cookie!

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 08/24/04:
Delivering
groceries, and Western Union Telegrams really helped me to memorize locations.
Maybe that is why it is so sad for me to see all those vacant lots.
I can still remember house numbers and residents names on my old paper route.
Of course, I was young then and had a good reason to remember that information.
Ohhhh, yeah – that would do it! I still find it incredible that you still remember them all, particularly
as you no longer live there, but that would have greatly helped to indelibly imprint all that information
on your mind.
I just thought you and David Spriggs ('64) both had magical powers of different sorts. I still think so.
I enjoy working with you and Dave and others on the web site.
And I hope you’ve noticed how very much the site has grown and improved in the last four months –
has it only been four months??? – since you’ve begun helping us! Thanks so much for everything you
do for us!

Also from Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 08/25/04:
Thanks, Joe! I just posted this:

Come to think of
it, Nathaniel was a Wednesday's child himself, born Wednesday, September 5, 1979
-
four minutes after we walked into the door of the wrong hospital (not making it
where we were headed).
Hey - how was I "posta" know I was in labor? He was only my fifth child!

I just had to lift out half this
letter, 'cause I gotta run to a luncheon and didn't have time to finish it.
You wanted
another letter tomorrow anyway, didn't you?
Y'all take care of each other..
Love to all, Carol

(From The Quiller Memorandum
- 1966)
Wednesday's child is a child of woe.
Wednesday's child cries alone, I know.
When you smiled, just for me you smiled,
For awhile I forgot I was Wednesday's child.
Friday's child wins at love, they say.
In your arms Friday was my day.
Now you're gone, well I should have known,
I am Wednesday's child, born to be alone.
Now you're gone, well I should have known,
I am Wednesday's child, born to be alone.
Wednesday's child, born to be alone
