08/26/04 - NNHS Newsletter - Thursday Morning
Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
My internet has
been down all morning, and I'm hanging by my last available thread. I'm
going to do the same thing
that I did yesterday, excise a goodly portion of today's Newsletter, and try
again tomorrow. That way, in case the internet
disappears again, at least SOMETHING will have made it through. I hope the
result isn't as disjointed as I fear it may be.
Here we are for
the continuation of yesterday's
Newsletter - and I know it's no longer morning,
but I'm not renaming
this Newsletter!
NEWBIES:
1. Kathy Vellines Plank ('72) of VA - 08/23/04 - courtesy of Bill Hobbs ('66) of VA
2. Debbie Hobbs ('72) of VA - also courtesy of Bill Hobbs ('66) of VA, her big brother
3. Bob Morgan ('56) of MA
- 08/25/04 - courtesy of, um, ME, sorta! Giggles!
Back on 08/02/04, Bob signed the Guest Book, and I just picked up on it,
somehow. And Surprise, surprise,
Bob, that's an automatic enrollment onto the mailing list! WILD Giggles!
So welcome, Kathy, Debbie, and Bob - and thanks, Bill!

From Bill Hobbs ('66) of VA - 08/08/04 and 08/23/04:
WOWZERS!!! Thanks, Bill! What a double day brightener! Every
time I find myself down as far as I did last weekend,
I'll just read your note for a pick-me-up, and remember why I'm here and what
I'm doing - besides annoying nearly 300
people on a regular basis, of course.
I was about to
surprise Kathy the same way I did Bob, because she too signed the Guest Book
long ago before
we had undergone the last couple of expansions. Thanks for facilitating
that for me, Bill!

Also from Bill Hobbs ('66) of VA to Dave Spriggs ('64) - 08/23/04
Dave, you probably don't remember me, my name is Bill
Hobbs class of " 66 ". I grew up on Briarfield Rd.
( 646 to be exact ) about 2
houses up from the Cut Rate drug store. I have attended every one of my class
reunions ( 6 ) and I think this is a great idea inviting all the classes, but is
it too late to register? I have been
networking with some of my classmates and
they think it's a great opportunity to bring everyone together.
Is there any time left?
Yes, Bill - as Dave told you,
even when the deadline has past, and you have to pay more - even if you show up
on those nights with your money clenched in your fists, there's still time, but
- well, Dave will tell you in his own words
later in this issue. See you there, Bill!
I'm looking forward to seeing you ALL at the Reunion to Remember.

From Shirley Caudill Williamson ('65) of VA - 08/23/04:
Giggles! I
hear that, Shirley! My days in Diaper Duty never really seemed to end.
There's only four years separating
the youngest of my seven children from the oldest of my eight grandchildren.
I even moved several states away from
them all, and somehow acquired an extra "grandchild" from the moment he was born
two years ago! HA-HA-HA!
I added your email addy to the Contact - '65 page:
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/contact-B.html
Thanks, Shirley!

From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 08/24/04:
Carol,
Perhaps you could add as a new entry for the Birthday page: Mr. Julius Conn, 21
October 1904
Your wish is my command, Captain! I spotlighted Coach Conn's entry
with a different font, size, and color.
Thanks, Dave - what a great idea!

From ME ('65) of NC - 08/25/04:
I think I may
have correctly identified the gal in the picture taken from page 147 of the 1955
Anchor
on "Our Old Cars" as Doris Bowden ('55). Anyone wanna check
those five images for me, please?
They were only wild shots in the dark.

Thanks!

From Jo Ann Stewart ('64) of TX - 08/25/04:
Oh, my,
yes, Jo Ann! I remember that pie! And I remember that Nachman's Tea
Room! I've been meaning
to add it to Our
Old Stomping Grounds, but it keeps slipping my mind. Thanks for
the reminder!
And
the Dog House
- one of my very favorite lunch spots! I remember one day Rose Woodard
('65) and I were
in there at lunch time at a table full of kids, including Steve Burns ('65)
- remember, Steve? We all became wild
and hyper - go figure! - and started trying to sabotage each other's lunches.
Steve put mustard all over my French
fries, and poured several sugar packets into my Coke, and was crushed when I
found I actually liked the results!
Some others weren't so fortunate with their "attackers", and as I recall, some
of them suffered rumbling tummies
that afternoon, 'cause they just couldn't deal with their doctored food, and
time was way too short to reorder. But we
surely did have fun that day! Thanks, Jo Ann!

From Debbie Hobbs ('72) of VA - 08/25/04:
Thanks, Debbie! We're delighted to have you with us!

From Bob Morgan ('56) of MA - 08/25/04:
One of the fun
things we do here is reconnect people - whether in person, by phone, email, or
snail mail.
Prepare for an onslaught, Bob!
I was about to
tell you that Ilene Levinson Lieberman ('65) lived in Israel, and that
you should look her up the next
time you're there. I had no idea she was your cousin until I read your
latest entry in the Guest Book! I've known Ilene
ever since we were little girls at
Magruder
School. Her email addy is published here:
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/contact-B.html
Y'all have fun reconnecting!
I added your birthday here, Bob - Thanks!

From Thelma Spade Roberts ('57) of VA - 08/25/04:
One specific birthday of note
is: that Mr. Mac (Mr. George McIntosh) turns 90 on the 17th
of September. If anyone wants to send him a card and/or note, his address is
2001 Camelia Circle,
Midlothian, VA 23112. I think he would be more than pleased to hear from a lot
of us -
he was such a great principal – just don’t find them like him these days!
WOW! How wonderful!
Thanks, Thelma! Card shower, anyone?!?
I resisted the
urge to willy-nilly add all those birthdays in your Newsletter to the "Birthday
Page", Thelma, but
I must say that it took tremendous willpower on my part. If you'd care to
ask your readers if they'd like to be
included, well, my fingers would be only too happy to type them in:

Yesterday Joe
Madagan ('57) of FL sent Nancy Bigger Alligood ('56) of VA and Me
the most adorable
image taken in 1951 of Harry Keller ('57), Joe
Madagan ('57), Doug Johnson ('57). You can see it
on "Famous Marines":
Thanks so much, Joe - it's really precious!

Also from Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 08/25/04:
WILDEST GIGGLES!!!
Dear Major Adonis,
What can I say? My computer has a weird thing going on with it right now.
I am not making this up. Sometimes the
text simply vanishes right in front of my eyes. it's still there; it just
changes colors and becomes invisible. The link
obviously showed
up on my computer, and Nathaniel's,
and Sarah's, but I'll print it here again for all those of you
who may have
missed it yesterday:
Just go to the web address below,
scroll down to the bottom of the page, and vote for the "Jamie Mo Show."
http://www.971talk.com/promotions/survivor.aspx
Scroll down to the third row of pictures. The first one says:
August 14th - "The Jamie Mo Show".
Click UNDER the image to hear the sound byte; click
ON Jamie's image to vote. TA-DAH!
Oh, and, Joe,
how are you gonna teach me how to keep my eyes open under water IF YOU DON'T
COME
TO THE REUNION?!? The Omni has a lovely pool. This
is quite possibly my last chance to learn to really swim.
I'm a generally trusting soul, but there are not that many people in the
world other than you whom I would trust with
my life.
Being the eternal optimist that I am, I'm packing my black bathing suit.
Always,
Bratty Brat
From my #5 son, Nathaniel Harty of IL - 08/25/04:
Thanks for the advertisement. Apparently
they will announce the winner on Friday. Oh, by the way....
I am no longer going for a Computer Management and Information Systems degree.
It was taking so friggin'
long to get to the classes I had to take before I could move on to higher
classes, that I would have been here
forever. So, I undeclared in the summer, and plan on declaring as a Mass
Communications major with emphasis
on radio and TV, and a minor in CMIS. Anyway, love ya, and thanks again.
Thanks, Fan - and thanks for al your continued help to us with the page!
From Sarah Puckett Kressaty ('65) of VA - 08/25/04:
Giggles!
Ya know, I wondered that myself, Sarah! I was afraid to vote more than
once myself, for fear that it would
kick out multiple votes from the same computer!

From Pauline Collins Shofner ('65) of VA - 08/25/04:
Carol,
Did you write that you have your Mother's class ring from John Marshall High
School? My mother graduated
from John Marshall High School in Richmond. I have her huge diploma. Could it be
the same high school?
Thanks. I'm a little slow looking @ e-mail messages. We have been helping my
daughter and son-in-law working
on their home getting ready for their little female addition due at the end of
October.
It's been fun and entertaining reading all of the comments.
Love,
Pauline
Hey, Pauline! Yes, indeedy-doody, that's the very same school!

Of course, the location could vary, depending on
when your mama graduated. When my parents graduated
from there in 1925, the school was right behind John Marshall's home. By
the time Bruce Korusek graduated
in 1966, the school had been at its new location for some years. Bruce is
the fellow who supplies us with all those
priceless old bus images for our
Citizens' Rapid Transit
page (Thanks, Bruce!).

From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 08/25/04:
OK, all you TYPHOONs,
especially the Class of 1964. My post office box is
growing cobwebs, and my nervous system is frazzled. Response to the Reunion
invitation has been …. well …. slow. Sixty-five (65) of you returned your
Surveys indicating that you planned to attend. As of August 25th (6
days shy
of the deadline) only twenty-two (22) of you have submitted your reservations.
C’MON, GUYS!!! Time's a’wastin’. Let’s get those checks in the mail, so that
Dave (whose name is on all the contracts) doesn’t end up in the Poorhouse.
More to the point, this will be a Reunion you won’t want
to miss. I haven’t told you about the surprises in store for
you …. then they wouldn’t be surprises, would they?
But,
you have seen Carol exhorting you week after week to attend, because she
knows some of what is planned.
Mr. Wilson,
Mr. Reed, and Mr.
Taylor ('55)
will be in attendance, as will
Coach Mitchell
and many members of
our 1964
State
Championship Basketball Team. We may never assemble this team again,
so you don’t want to miss it.
Let's get that TYPHOON Network humming. I am hoping each of you will contact
a Classmate, especially those who are not subscribers to this Newsletter, and
encourage them to attend.
Thanks, Dave.
There ya go. What more can we possibly tell y'all without ruining it all for you? JUST BE THERE!
Y'all take care of each other.
Love to all, Carol

Thursday's Child
By David
Bowie and Reeves Gabrels
(Thanks to Zig Dust for his help with these lyrics.)
All of my life
I've tried so hard
Doing my best with what I had
Nothing much happened all the same
Something about me stood apart
A whisper of hope that seemed to fail
Maybe I'm born right out of my time
Breaking my life in two
(Throw me tomorrow..oh,oh)
Now that I've really got a chance
(Throw me tomorrow..oh,oh)
Everything's falling into place
(Throw me tomorrow..oh,oh)
Seeing my past to let it go
(Throw me tomorrow..oh,oh)
Only for you I don't regret
That I was Thursday's Child
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday born I was (x2)
Sometimes I cried my heart to sleep
Shuffling days and lonesome nights
Sometimes my courage fell to my feet
Lucky old sun is in my sky
Nothing prepared me for your smile
Lighting the darkness of my soul
Innocence in your arms
(Throw me tomorrow..oh,oh)
Now that I've really got a chance
(Throw me tomorrow..oh,oh)
Everything's falling into place
(Throw me tomorrow..oh,oh)
Seeing my past to let it go
(Yeah, throw me tomorrow..oh,oh)
Only for you I don't regret
That I was Thursday's Child
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday born I was Thursday's Child
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday born I was Thursday's Child
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday born I was
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday born I was
