Friends and

ARGHHH!!!
Thanks for catching that, Joe!
It's time for another
round of my True Confessions. As I compose the Newsletters, I skip
around wildly, so that what appears first on the page was not necessarily
addressed first. This particular entry happened to be the last to be
completed in yesterday's twelve-hour marathon. I believe I released
the Newsletter at 6:00 PM, and by 6:30 PM had uncharacteristically crawled
in bed. Obviously, I wasn't feeling particularly super-duper...
Along about midnight I awoke with the feeling that I had neglected to add the words, "Welcome to our Famous Sailors, Chuck!" to my response - which indeed, I had. But at that moment, had I jumped up to amend it, I would have disturbed the entire household. I reasoned that the damage had already been done, and I would surely awaken long before the roosters, and would amend it then.
Unfortunately, I somehow slept in until 7:00 AM............
So now, both errors have been addressed, only thirteen hours too late:

to everyone - especially to Chuck and Butch!

The surprise at the end of the
World War II Memorial Municipal Swimming Pool
page was great. Mrs. Elliott was one hard working lady, and so
gracious and charming.
As I scrolled down, I suspected that you may have found your Beginner
Swimmers card bearing my signature, and scanned it and placed it on this
page. But I see I was wrong...but, it was sure nice to see Darlene
Mitchell's ('55) photo again, as well as the other lovely ladies
in the photo images.
TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL
That would have been delightful, Joe, but I'm afraid after all my repeated moves over the last forty-eleven years, the chance of such a treasure coming to light is extremely small... :o(

From Norm Covert ('61) of MD - 10/02/07 - "Gail! ":
Webdoll,
What a surprise it was to see
my 33rd Street pal
Gail Gaskins Roberson ('58) of NCin the photos of the super bash in
Buckroe last weekend. Please send my email address to Gail and tell her how
great it is see that she is still a good looker! I was always too young and
she was family. I risk life and limb to attach this picture of Gail and my
brother,
Harry
('57, Northern Va.),
when they were good pals in the neighborhood. Gail has a bit of a pose to
turn a guy's head, but Harry is non-plussed. I was still in diapers. |

Unfortunately, I don't have Gail's email - or snail - address at the moment, but I gave her my card and hope to be hearing from her soon.....
Also wanted to say my pen pal,
Dimples Dinwiddie Prichard ('58, NC), helps
make the Class of '58 appear well preserved, too. It is amazing what good
genes can do and is more apparent if you compare the Bathing Beauty photo of
1955 to the party shots. (Miz Carol, yours are good, too.)

Thanks for sharing

Carol,
The man (in image #83) with
Eleanor (Buckley Nowitzky - '59 - of NC) and me is
Les Puckett ('58)..... He came to NNHS in '57
from Martinsville, Va. He told me at the party that I was the first girl at NNHS
to smile at him. He is a dear soul and wrote the most touching poem for our
50-Year Reunion Yearbook. It will remain secret until the reunion.
You left your card case at the party and I have it and will mail it to you. You
are well loved by all. We had 90 people at the Party....Amazing !!!
Love, Dimples
Thank you very much, Sepi!
I
appreciate your help!
And I'd not even missed my card case. Why doncha just hang on to it until we get together for your birthday??

From My Niece, Shari, of VA - 10/03/07 - "Vastly Improved Outlook":
A Vastly Improved
Outlook
by The Traveler
California, USA
My siblings had planned this spring 2004 pack trip through the Grand Canyon for
two years. I was breaking up with a man I adored, yet no way would I miss this
trip.
Mr. Wonderful called the day before the trip to say he wasn't going -- so I
should make my own arrangements to get to Arizona from California. That was
something of a problem. I'm far from wealthy, and my 52-year-old eyeballs aren't
up to driving in unfamiliar territory.
But a family edict is a family edict: I made it.
The canyon was spectacular, the weather perfect, the company a hoot. Although
we're all middle-aged and several decades from our last wilderness experience
together, we comported ourselves quite competently.
Sore, tired, yet full of a sense of having accomplished a small miracle, we
gathered at a restaurant back on top of the canyon rim for a celebratory dinner.
Halfway through, my brother-in-law looked me square in the eye and said, "We're
not taking you to the airport."
I was flabbergasted! We'd all met in Phoenix, and driven four hours into the
canyon together. One naturally assumed we'd return to the airport to catch our
respective flights home together. Apparently my flight, an hour and a half
before the others, would entail everyone leaving at 9:30 AM versus 11 AM, and
that just wouldn't work for them. Or something.
Eccentric family dynamics notwithstanding, there was neither taxi service nor
shuttle vans from the canyon to the airport. I'd just spent the week
backpacking. I had no cash. My credit card was maxed out. My sibs were
unsympathetic. I was broke, physically exhausted and spiritually drained. And I
was stranded.
In tears, I walked back to the hotel to try to figure out how to get home. I
walked into the lobby at night, totally distraught. The woman at the front desk
noticed my sniveling and asked what was wrong.
When I told her, she went into action. Roberta W grabbed a phone and started
calling. The Phoenix tour bus wasn't running, so she called her son. He couldn't
get away to drive me, so she called a co-worker. As I watched slack-jawed, she
arranged to switch shifts with him the next morning. "Be here at eight tomorrow,
I'll take you. Go get some sleep."
She showed up on the dot, and gathered my stuff into her van.
I'll bypass the personal travails this dear woman was dealing with, and the
challenges she's overcome. The long drive into Phoenix was filled with her
wonderful stories and cheerful observations. Not only did I make my flight in
plenty of time, I did so with a vastly improved outlook on life and its
vicissitudes.
I've no idea what motivates a person to spend her day off driving across a state
in aid of a clueless stranger, but Ms Whitt's astounding generosity put the
previous evening's pettiness into a perspective I have not forgotten.
I'd like to publicly thank her for the lesson she imparted.
Thanks so much, Shari!

Butterfly
(Mariah Carey,
1997)
When you love someone so deeply
They become your life
It's easy to succumb to overwhelming fears inside
Blindly I imaged I could
Keep you under glass
Now I understand to hold you
I must open my hands
And watch you rise
[Chorus:]
Spread your wings and prepare to fly
For you have become a butterfly
Fly abandonedly into the sun
If you should return to me
We truly were meant to be
So spread your wings and fly
Butterfly
I have learned that beauty
Has to flourish in the light
Wild horses run unbridled
Or their spirit dies
You have given me the courage
To be all that I can
And truly feel your heart will
Lead you back to me when you're
Ready to land
[Chorus]
I can't pretend these tears
Aren't overflowing steadily
I can't prevent this hurt from
Almost overtaking me
But I will stand and say goodbye
For you'll never be mine
Until you know the way it feels to fly
[Chorus]
So flutter through the sky
Butterfly
Spread your wings and fly
Butterfly
