Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
| Things may
be different where you are, but here in Fayetteville, we're still running in
the 80's - hot, rather than merely warm. Friday promises to change all
that, but for today, it has a very summery beach-y feel.
Let's begin with a big round
of applause for
After finding our seats
Saturday night, I saw
By the way, throughout the meal, at least five more of Mr. Loving's former students came over to tell him almost verbatim the same things I had said, almost as though we were all reading from the same script! |

people I knew. Is there a newsletter?

Yes, indeed, there is a
Newsletter ... and so much more. It all revolves around a web site which
is maintained by an alumna of the Class of 1965,
Carol Buckley (Harty).
Here is the link:
http://nnhs65.00freehost.com/
At this link you can see
which 1964 (and all other classes) alumni have "signed on" to the site:
Let me warn you: If you
have any nostalgic interest at all in NNHS and Newport News, then you
should set aside several hours to look at this site. There is enough
content there to keep you reading for a very long time. There are links to
all the Newsletters which Carol has published (at least weekly) going back
to the first one of May 25, 2004.
http://nnhs65.00freehost.com/NNHS-Newsletters-2004.html
I have also addressed this e-mail to Carol, so that she can begin sending you the Newsletter. The site and the Newsletter contain information of interest to all Classes of NNHS.
Welcome aboard, Domi!
Modesty obviously prevented Captain Spriggs from saying that the site is
what it is today largely because of his vision...And thank you, David!
I've added your name (without your addie) to the Alumni and the Contact Pages We look forward to
hearing from you!

Hope you're okay........you
know I worry when I don't see a newsletter pop up. Plus, I can't seem to
find the link for all the newsletters. It's a DUH! on me.
Don't worry, Gloria! I've just been slacking - or in extremely slow motion - or something. This Newsletter, for instance, has somehow for no discernable reason taken me three whole days to complete. Dat ain't right, but it's true.... And
I've no ideas whatsoever concerning (Are you

Hi,
It is
with regret again, that I will be out of town for the class reunion of

the newsletters that you so graciously prepare and send out. What
a fun time will be had be all and it is great to see that many people
respond. It seems as though I am always gone when one of these takes
place, but again I send my regards to all and hope everyone thoroughly
enjoys.............

From Bob Parrish ('68) of VA - 09/29/06:

This was just sent to me. I can't swear that it's true but it appears to
be based on a real event.
Cat Lover or Not, this is hysterical!
We've all had trouble with our animals, but I don't think anyone can top this one: Calling in sick to work makes me uncomfortable. No matter how legitimate my excuse, I always get the feeling that my boss thinks I'm lying. On one recent occasion, I had a valid reason but lied anyway, because the truth was just too darned humiliating. I simply mentioned that I had sustained a head injury, and I hoped I would feel up to coming in the next day. By then, I reasoned, I could think up a doozy to explain the bandage on the top of my head. The accident occurred mainly because I had given in to my wife's wishes to adopt a cute little kitty. Initially, the new acquisition was no problem Then one morning, I was taking my shower after breakfast when I heard my wife, Deb, call out to me from the kitchen. "Honey! The garbage disposal is dead again. Please come reset it." "You know where the button is," I protested through the shower pitter-patter and steam. "Reset it yourself!" "But I'm scared!" she persisted. "What if it starts going and sucks me in?" There was a meaningful pause and then, "C'mon, it'll only take you a second." So out I came, dripping wet and butt naked, hoping that my silent outraged nudity would make a statement about how I perceived her behavior as extremely cowardly. Sighing loudly, I squatted down and stuck my head under the sink to find the button. It is the last action I remember performing. It struck without warning, and without any respect to my circumstances. No, it wasn't the hexed disposal, drawing me into its gnashing metal teeth. It was our new kitty, who discovered the fascinating dangling objects she spied hanging between my legs She had been poised around the corner and stalked me as I reached under the sink. And, at the precise moment when I was most vulnerable, she leapt at the toys I unwittingly offered and snagged them with her needle-like claws. I lost all rational thought to control orderly bodily movements, blindly rising at a violent rate of speed, with the full weight of a kitten hanging from my masculine region. Wild animals are sometimes faced with a "fight or flight" syndrome. Men, in this predicament, choose only the "flight" option. I know this from experience. I was fleeing straight up into the air when the sink and cabinet bluntly and forcefully impeded my ascent. The impact knocked me out cold. When I awoke, my wife and the paramedics stood over me. Now there are not many things in this life worse than finding oneself lying on the kitchen floor butt naked in front of a group of "been-there, done-that" paramedics. Even worse, having been fully briefed by my wife, the paramedics were all snorting loudly as they tried to conduct their work, all the while trying to suppress their hysterical laughter......and not succeeding. Somehow I lived through it all. A few days later I finally made it back in to the office, where colleagues tried to coax an explanation out of me about my head injury. I kept silent, claiming it was too painful to talk about, which it was. "What's the matter?" They all asked, "Cat got your tongue?" If they only knew! Why is it that only the women laugh at this?
Bob Parrish (68)
Thanks,
Bobby! I'm not laughing! No, really, I'm not!!!

From Jay Styles ('68) of VA - 09/29/06:
|
Greetings Carol,
Hope you guys had a great time at the
reunion, I started mid-night shift last night, with six more nights to
go. Hope someone there gave you a big hug for me, hopefully the guy
that drives the Jeep with the curb feelers volunteered for that duty.
Well, I didn't dance as much as I had wanted, but I think
it's safe to say that I missed very few opportunities to collect my
hugs! I'm sure there was at least one in there somewhere from you!
Noticed that I made the "Famous Soldiers" list. First, a small bit of correction, the "Highway Patrol" we ain't, it's the "State Police", I know to the average person, what's the difference, but believe me, there is a HUGE difference. And
one day you must "'splain it to me, Luzy!" I had no
idea! Sorry for the gaffe, Sweetie!
Lets see, I was born in Asheville, NC on December 7, 1949 and hopefully I am still living, even though on this shift, I don't call that living. I enlisted in the US Army on April 28, 1969, attended Boot Camp at Ft. Benning, Ga., then AIT at Ft. Gordon, Ga. My first duty post as a Military Policeman was at Redstone Arsenal, Ala. with the 291 MP Co. In March, 1970, I was sent to the Korean DMZ for a one year deployment with the 2nd MP Co, 2nd Infantry Division. The only thing I ever did while there that might be considered "famous": John Sweeter and I captured a North Korean Agent trying to get back across the DMZ to North Korea. In March 1970 I was assigned to the 546th MP Co., at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma until I was discharged in December 1970. That's
rather impressive, I would say! But we're not listing
"Noteworthy Soldiers" except those who are also "Famous". And your
fame derives from being a graduate of NNHS,
so it's all good!
There were two especially outstanding incidents which happened there, but they are too long to list here, maybe someday I will fill you in. I came home and became a police officer with the Newport News Police Department, a good experience, but too confining. Spent five years with the NNSB&DDCo, Security Force, waiting to become a State Trooper. On March 1, 1979 I became a State Trooper, serving in Mecklenburg Co, (South Hill) Fairfax County and for the last twenty years have been here in Rockingham County Harrisonburg). I am a Master Trooper and I am also a firearms instructor. During my career, I could write a book, containing just about everything, who knows maybe I will when I retire, which is drawing close. Oh, I forgot, when I left the Military, I was a SP4, and took an early out just before I would have received my Sergeant stripes. Has been an Excellent career.
Okay, I'm going to make all these corrections tomorrow.
If it's not done by 1800, would five of y'all (any five, choose amongst
yourselves) please write and remind me?!? Thanks!!!

Madagan ('57)

Hi, Carol:
Just got back from my daily run, and found your email.
Hope that you and
Eleanor (Buckley Nowitzky - '59 -
of NC) have a blast at the
Birthday Party being hosted by
Evelyn Fryer Fish ('58 - of TX). Wish we could
be there, and attend the reunion as well.
We did indeed
have a blast, Sweet Adonis, and thought of y'all and missed
you!
Today, I cracked my self up while running. It was
beautiful day in Tampa at the park where I run, and listening to tunes on
"The Dove" and just as I approached the 4 mile marker, they played a song
by Berlin, "Take My Breathe Away" and my mind swiftly went back to the
week that you, Dave Spriggs and I were going on and on about the awful
smell we would frequently encounter in Hampton, and wanted appropriate
music for the "Oyster Pile" in Hampton and we settled on this song. We had
such a good time putting that one together, and it was just hilarious
going back and forth. So, all of that nonsense came rolling back on me
while I was trying to concentrate on running, and I had to stop and walk
and just simply crack up.
Gladly there was no one else near by, or I would have
been so embarrassed. A good laugh does help the digestion and attitude.
That's hysterical,
Joe, all the more so because the next day as we were driving to
Buckroe, we encountered that
unmistakable aroma, and I all but doubled over with nausea, and
immediately remember the building of that page as well! Those were
fun times!
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/old-stomping.html
Hope
Paul (Harty - Bardolph HS, IL - '61 - of NC) landed that job
that he was going to go for an interview this week. Keep us posted, Kid.
TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ("57) of FL
We've heard nothing back
yet, Joe. And believe me, when we hear, y'all will hear! Thanks
again for everything!

From My Sister, Eleanor Buckley Nowitzky ('59) of NC - 10/02/06 - "Heads up on
false
email causing problems":
| URGENT!! BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY. READ AND HEED. I googled this also, and they list a number of email RE: that lead to virus possibilities.... They say just make sure your anti-virus protection is updated. I just verified this with Snopes and it is REAL. Emails with pictures of Osama Bin-Laden hanged are being sent and the moment that you open these emails your computer will crash and you will not be able to fix it! If you get an email along the lines of "Osama Bin Laden Captured" or "Osama Hanged" don't open the attachment. This e-mail is being distributed through countries around the globe, but mainly in the US and Israel. You should be alert during the next days: Do not open any message with an attached filed called "Invitation" regardless of who sent it. It is a virus that opens an Olympic Torch which "burns" the whole hard disc C of your computer. This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address in his/her contact list, that is why you should send this e-mail to all your contacts. It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus and open it. If you receive a mail called "invitation", though sent by a friend, do not open it and shut down your computer immediately. This is the worst virus announced by CNN, it has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was discovered by McAfee (recently), and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital information is kept. YIKESARONI!!! Thanks, Lady! (Okay, y'all can triple-check this if you want; I'm a bit short of time as usual...) |

THIS MAY COME AS A SURPRISE TO THOSE OF YOU NOT LIVING IN LAS VEGAS, BUT
THERE ARE MORE CATHOLIC CHURCHES THAN CASINOS. NOT SURPRISINGLY, SOME WORSHIPPERS AT SUNDAY SERVICES WILL GIVE CASINO CHIPS RATHER THAN CASH WHEN THE BASKET IS PASSED. SINCE THEY GET CHIPS FROM MANY DIFFERENT CASINOS, THE CHURCHES HAVE DEVISED A METHOD TO COLLECT THE OFFERINGS. THE CHURCHES SEND ALL THEIR COLLECTED CHIPS TO A NEARBY FRANCISCAN MONASTERY FOR SORTING AND THEN THE CHIPS ARE TAKEN TO THE CASINOS OF ORIGIN AND CASHED IN. THIS IS DONE BY THE CHIP MONKS. YOU DIDN'T EVEN SEE IT COMING, DID YOU?

Bermuda, Bahama come on pretty mama
Key Largo, Montego baby why don't we go
Jamaica off the Florida Keys
There's a place called Kokomo
That's where you wanna go to get away from it all
Bodies in the sand
Tropical drink melting in your hand
We'll be falling in love
To the rhythm of a steel drum band
Down in Kokomo
Aruba, Jamaica ooo I wanna take you
To Bermuda, Bahama come on pretty mama
Key Largo, Montego baby why don't we go
Down to Kokomo
We'll get there fast
And then we'll take it slow
That's where we wanna go
Way down to Kokomo
To Martinique, that Monserrat mystique
We'll put out to sea
And we'll perfect our chemistry
By and by we'll defy a little bit of gravity
Afternoon delight
cocktails and moonlit nights
That dreamy look in your eye
Give me a tropical contact high
Way down in Kokomo
Aruba, Jamaica ooo I wanna take you
To Bermuda, Bahama come on pretty mama
Key Largo, Montego baby why don't we go
Down to Kokomo
We'll get there fast
And then we'll take it slow
That's where we wanna go
Way down to Kokomo
Port Au Prince I wanna catch a glimpse
Everybody knows
A little place like Kokomo
Now if you wanna go
And get away from it all
Go down to Kokomo
Aruba, Jamaica ooo I wanna take you
To Bermuda, Bahama come on pretty mama
Key Largo, Montego baby why don't we go
Down to Kokomo
We'll get there fast
And then we'll take it slow
That's where we wanna go
Way down to Kokomo
Aruba, Jamaica ooo I wanna take you
To Bermuda, Bahama come on pretty mama
Key Largo, Montego baby why don't we go
Down to Kokomo
We'll get there fast
And then we'll take it slow
That's where we wanna go
Way down to Kokomo
Aruba, Ja
