Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
One Last Reminder:
Paul and Adrienne and I are flying to St. Louis today for a
reunion with five of my six sons,
all eight of my
grandchildren (the two youngest of whom we've never met!), assorted in-laws and friends, and the wedding of
my third son, Randolph,
to his beloved, Brandy, on Saturday. I won't arrive home until late
on Monday
night, October 11. I'll not be able to access my files, do
any
work on the web site, write any Newsletters, or reach my
regular mail
account (NNHS65@nc.rr.com)
while I'm gone. It will all be there
when I return, but I won't see it
until then. Should you need
to contact
me, you may use my old account:
NNHS65@yahoo.com. A couple
of you also have
other yahoo addies which will work too.
Thanks
for your patience.

Happy Birthday tomorrow to Wayne Stokes ('65) of VA!

NEWBIE:
1. Chuck Anspach ('60) of NC - 10/05/04:
Hey,
Chuck! Welcome aboard! I see you live about an hour away from my
sister, Eleanor (Buckley Nowitzky - '59) and me.
Yeah, um, I "conveniently" forgot to mention anywhere that when you sign the Guest
Book as you did, you've automatically earned
yourself
a spot on our Alumni Roll and (hidden) mailing list:
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/alumni-list.html
Sorry about that (well, not really...). But we try to have fun here, so maybe it won't be so bad.

From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 10/06/04:
On
behalf of the NNHS 64/40 Reunion Committee, I am pleased to report to the Class
of 1964 that our former teacher, Mr. James B. Loving,
has accepted our invitation
to attend our Reunion on Saturday, October 23rd, 2004.
WOWZERONI!!!
David, you are my hero!
Bless your heart!!!
If I was excited before, I'm flying wildly now! ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!
(not that I am given to wild ranges of emotional outbursts or anything....)

I just did some checking.
This apparently got lost in the shuffle last week and never made it to its
destination. Thanks, Joe!
And it is soooo cool! Thanks so much for sharing it with us!

From Jerry Gammon ('63) of VA - 10/05/04:
CAROL – THE
NEWSLETTER NOTIFICATION HAS BEEN SENT TO ME ABOUT 4 TIMES. MAYBE
GOING MULTIPLE TIMES TO EVERYONE ELSE,
AS WELL.
I AM GLAD I
LISTED MY E MAIL AND WEB SITE WITH YOU, I HAVE HEARD FROM SOME NICE PEOPLE AND
HAD MANY COMMENTS ON MY
PICTURES. THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO TO KEEP THE SITES GOING.
Oh, Goody. A new mystery.
I double checked the three mailing list batches (each letter goes out three
times, based on the first
letter of your first name), and only found your name listed once - proving
nothing.... I send a notification each time I publish a new
Newsletter. The problem is now that there are over 300 of you on the
Mailing List, the "weekly" Newsletter
must be sent out every
other day or so - and occasionally every day. So this week alone you
should have received notifications of the following Newsletters:
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/10-01-04-NNHS-Consider-the-Lilies.html
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/10-03-04-NNHS-Butterflies-Are-Free.html
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/10-04-04-NNHS-Complimentary-Edition.html
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/10-05-04-NNHS-Training-Counts.html
Of course, this week, you should have a break from all that, as I'll be far, far away and quiet as a little mouse.
Anyway, whatever the cause, I'm sorry for being a pest, Jerry. Let me know if the problem persists. Thanks!

Uh, yeah, that would do it! Thanks, Dave!
From Tom Oxner ('65) of AR - 10/05/04:
I delivered newspapers on Madison Avenue, Marshall Avenue, Clinton Drive, and
parts of Jefferson Avenue during the time
of the Cuban Missile Crisis. I remember one customer on Marshall Avenue who told
me he had built a fallout shelter in his back
yard (I did not get to inspect it). He asked that I deliver his paper to the
fallout shelter instead of his front porch in the event
of war. I assured him that in the event of war, delivering newspapers would go
down considerably on my priority list. Pretty
scary time.
Tom
Yes, it was - but that's a great story! Thanks so much, Tom!
From Linda Lane Lane ('64) of VA to Jean Poole Burton ('64) of RI - 10/05/04:
I remember hearing about the drills in school and the nuclear fallout from a
distance. While you were in the halls practicing
safety, my family was living in Idaho Falls, Idaho only 60 minutes from the
"site". The shipyard sent 250
Virginia families
out there to build a nuclear reactor in the desert. The Atomic Energy
Commission provided the daily bus transportation out
to the desert for our fathers to work. During those 3 years, we never once
practiced anything that you described. No one
even talked about it. Finally, weeks before the job was completed and turned
over to Westinghouse and the Navy, visits were conducted for those over 12 years
of age. Again, being a child, I didn't get to see the site or it's replica
until 35 years later.
Other class of 64 members were there: Lee Sutton, Porter Blakemore ...I
am sure some of our former Navy classmates were
there also. It was a wonderful time and a beautiful part of the US. When we
returned to VA in 1959, it didn't take long
before the fall-out signs were posted at our church -
Noland Memorial Methodist.
Can't wait to see you, Jean.
And that's another great story! Thanks, Linda!

Two weeks. TWO WEEKS!! How cool is that?!? I'm finding it difficult to

From Steve Veazey ('60) of VA - 10/05/04:
Carol, can you put me on the
“inactive” list until 20 Oct.? We’re going on a trip during 6-19 Oct and I’d
like
to keep my In Box to a minimal number of incoming emails.
Many thanks!
Steve
Hey, Steve! (Tee-Hee!
I got another note from Steve Veazey! He doesn't know the huge
crush I had on him when I was a little girl, 'cause I've never really
actually met him! SHHHH! Don't tell!) I’ve
moved you off to the side of the mailing list. Have a great trip, and take lots
of pictures to send to us
when
you return. We live on borrowed fun!

From Perry Howard ('68) of VA - 10/06/04:
Dear Carol,
Do you know of anyone that is putting out a class paper like you do for the
Class of '68???????
Or how I could contact them?
Thanks, Perry
Hey,
Perry! Ummmm, a class paper such as I edit?!? Honey, I think there's
actually a limited number of lunatics running around
loose out there... But someone on your Reunion Committee may know something that
I don't. Unfortunately, I do not know who is
on your Reunion Committee. Anyone? Anyone?
Meanwhile, if
you'll recruit more people from your class to join our ranks, I'll give it my
best shot to address the problem from that
direction. Best wishes!

HA-HA!!
HA-HA-HA!!! Sweetie, I hope you don't think that I created that Word
Problem myself! There's a very good reason that
I majored in English rather than Math. It's only been in the last 15-20
years that my Word Problem nightmares have ceased. So, don't
worry, Joe. I can assure you, there's not the slightest chance that I will spill the beans on
this fun game before my return from Illinois.
WILD GIGGLES!!! Thanks!

From Eric Huffstutler (BHS - '75) of VA - 10/06/04:
Christmas memories...
As stores push to get their "trim a tree" sections out on the shelves we are reminded that the holidays are just around the corner!
When growing up, Washington Avenue was "the" place to shop as all of the
anchor stores were there. Streets were festively
decorated and people flocked to
them for annual parades including the marching band of NNHS. How I anticipated
going to these
and seeing Santa arrive usually standing at the Standard Drug
Store across from Top's Restaurant. The newspaper use to run
ads for C&O to take
a train ride to greet Santa, leaving from the pier station. It was a short ride
(probably a mile and then the train
backed up in to the pier) but when you're a
kid everything seemed bigger and Santa was waiting on a caboose waving as you
passed
by. In later years he would take a helicopter into
Newmarket Shopping
Center, the old strip mall that had the weather ball on its
sign that changed
colors. It was a BIG event and even had spotlights. But in 1967 with the opening
of Mercury Plaza in Hampton, it
marked the beginning of the end for downtown as
anchor stores pulled out one by one and along wit them went traditions. That is
a
sad memory for me, the end of downtown as I remembered it.
Eric
Oooh, thanks for this one, Eric! It brought some things vividly to my mind!
A couple of days
after Christmas this past year, Fred Mays ('60) of VA was gracious enough
to allow Jimmy Parker ('62), Dave
Spriggs ('64), and Paul and Adrienne and me to come visit him and Patty
(Andrews Mays - '61), and give us a tour of his fabulous
collection of Newport News memorabilia. I was happily flipping through a
notebook of old images when I suddenly came upon this one:
![]() |

| 1965 - Washington Avenue |
I promptly burst into tears. Well, it was only a matter of time before they all realized I was a nut case anyway, right?
Tim Parsons
('73) of VA sent me this image on 07/10/04 (Thanks again, Tim!), and I
started crying all over again. Hmmm. I wonder
if this is one of the reasons why my sons call me "Wienius Maximus"?

Also from Eric Huffstutler (BHS - '75) of VA - 10/06/04:
Memory about CV-67 USS John F. Kennedy
While living near the
Stonewall Jackson Elementary School I have a memory
that is packed away in the back of my mind.
The day that the aircraft carrier JFK was being launched (May 27, 1967) a limousine broke down in front of our
apartment building.
A few people including my stepfather helped push it out of
the road while I stood on the sidelines. In it was Jackie Kennedy (who
didn't marry Onassis until '68) who waited for another to arrive to pick her up. Of course
that didn't take long but did at least get a
quick glimpse of her. After the
ship had been fitted out in '68, it was opened up to the public for tours. That
was during the days you
could still do that sort of thing just like standing on
the tarmac watching air shows. I remember very well riding on one of the flight
deck elevators being raised and lowered. Now it would take an act of Congress
and a CIA escort for civilians to go aboard a military ship!
Eric
WOWZERS!!! What a cool
story, Eric! When I get back, remind me to figure out where to post this,
and also to tell you a story or
two about the christening of USS Forrestal (CV-59) on Dec. 11, 1954.
GOOD GLORY, PETE! I just realized that's the day before
Tom Norris (HHS - '73) was born! And I remember it so well!
SHEESH! Somebody help me find my cane.... No, that can't be
right;
I'm still just a kid! Well, something's wrong with this story somewhere,
but I don't have time to figure it out right now.
Thanks again, Eric!

Reach Out, I'll Be There
(The Four Tops)
Now if you feel that you can't go on (can't go on)
Because all of your hope is gone (all your hope is gone)
And your life is filled with much confusion (much confusion)
Until happiness is just an illusion (happiness is just an illusion)
And your world around is crumbling down, darlin'
Reach out, come on, girl, reach on out for me
Reach out, reach out for me
I'll be there with a love that will shelter you
I'll be there with a love that will see you through
When you feel lost and about to give up (to give up)
'Cause your life just ain't good enough (just ain't good enough)
And you feel the world has grown cold (has grown cold)
And you're drifting out all on your own (drifting out on your own)
And you need a hand to hold, darlin'
Reach out, come on, girl, reach out for me
Reach out, reach out for me
I'll be there to love and comfort you
And I'll be there to cherish and care for you
I'll be there to always see you through
I'll be there to love and comfort you
I can tell the way you hang your head (hang your head)
You're not in love now, now you're afraid (you're afraid)
And through the tears you look around (look around)
But there's no peace of mind to be found (no peace of mind to be found)
I know what you're thinking,
You're alone now, no love of your own, but darlin'
Reach out, come on, girl, reach out for me
Reach out, reach out.......... just look over your shoulder
I'll be there to give you all the love you need
And I'll be there; you can always depend on me
I'll be there to always see you through
I'll be there to love and comfort you
