Hopelessly Devoted to You

“Gallantry to women - the sure road to their favor - is nothing but
the appearance of extreme devotion to all their wants and wishes,
a delight in their satisfaction, and a confidence in yourself
as being able to contribute toward it.”

- William Hazlitt
(10 Apr 1778 - 18 Sept 1830)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Okay, Sweetie-Pies, this is weird - even for me.

A few days ago while searching for something or other, I noticed a song called, "Hopelessly Devoted to You" - which sounded intriguing, but it was from "Grease" - and I do not like "Grease" on general principles (I mean, seriously, the Bad Guys win!  It don' posta happen that way!!! The Goody Two Shoes Girl should have set such a fine example that she won over the Bad Guys, but, nooooo.)  But I digress....

Anyway, I listened to the tune and found it quite lovely.  Then I Googled the words, and really liked them.  But I was adamant (okay, stubborn).

Then last night,       Eleanor (Buckley Nowitzky - '59 - of NC) and       Adrienne (Harty - of NC) and I, having spent the entire afternoon goofing off (okay, or running errands - whatever), were watching ABC's delightful new show, "Pushing Daisies", and this song was prominently featured.

So, not having heard from either my Magic Shower or my Haunted Radio lately, I decided to use it anyway.  I like such patterns when they appear.

THEN I read my evening mail, and found this extraordinarily touching note from Normie.

As I said - I do love repeating patterns.

From Norm Covert ('61) of MD - 10/10/07 - "An Appreciation":

Webdoll,

I thought it important to mention that news you have faithfully and tastefully reported in recent weeks -- losing so many NNHS friends and alumni -- has brought a lot of sadness. I thought it appropriate for selfish reasons that we acknowledge our classmates like      Dicky Dawes (NNHS/HHS - '62 - of VA). They have devotedly cared for a spouse who was suffering from a serious illness over both short and extended periods of time, as Dicky did with his   Sharron (Wanderer Dawes) (’61). It is a terribly draining experience emotionally and physically as you care for your loved one, who once was a vibrant happy helpmate, with whom you shared joys, sorrows, parents, children and grandchildren.

I have nothing but the greatest admiration for such devoted spouses, including my own Loretta (Stuttgart American HS, ’68), who has endured five years of my being carted off in an ambulance, not sure if I was going to live or die as the day/night wore on.

Our Father in Heaven has a way of being with us in these moments of crisis, either when we are the caregiver or as patient, who knows not what tomorrow will bring. October 10th is the six-month anniversary of my latest open heart surgery. For the first time in the five-year challenge, I have made this semi-annual anniversary feeling no angina, in fact a bit invigorated and dare I say, perky! I’m elated at my new “blooming” and thankful for a wife, who always had strength when the days seemed darkest. There will be a special place in heaven for such spouses.

Norm Covert (’61)

Norm, Sweetie, I am so overcome by your words and your sentiments - even 24 hours later, I can only add a loud "Amen" and my heartiest congratulations on your improving health!

Thank you so very much for sharing all this with us, and for expressing it so beautifully! We have indeed seen ample evidence of much love and devotion on all sides here.

From Renee Helterbran Benton ('59) of VA - "Free Mammograms":

Carol

I've noticed the Free Mammograms button has been missing from the newsletters lately.

Renee

Hi, Renee! That's because the majority of the Newsletters lately have been Memorial Editions, and the Free Mammogram button has never been incorporated on them, although it does appear on the main index page, just above the credits at the bottom.

I'm rather peculiar and protective when it comes to the Memorial Editions; I hold them sacred, and do not wish to include any other material on them which would detract from that spirit, even for so great a cause.

I did recheck the other recent editions, and could not find one which lacked the button, though if such a blooper did happen, I do apologize.

From one of my Famous Marines,  Herb Hice of MI, who served in the Pacific Theater during WWII -  10/10/07 - "Dear Carol / Dimples, THIS IS TRUE ~~~ 100 years ago":

THE YEAR 1907 - This will boggle your mind, I know it did mine!
The year is 1907.
One hundred years ago.
What a difference a century makes!
Here are some of the U.S. Statistics for the Year
1907:

The average life expectancy in the U.S. Was 47 years old.

Only 14 percent of the homes in the U.S.
had a bathtub.

Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.
A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars.

There were only 8,000 cars in the U.S., and only 144 miles of paved roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more
heavily populated than California.
With a mere 1.4 million people, California was only the 21st most populous state in the Union.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower !
The average wage in the U.S. Was 22 Cents per hour.
The average U.S. Worker made between $200 and $400  per year.
A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist made $2,500 per year,
a veterinarian $1,500 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

More than 95 percent of all births in the U.S. Took place at
HOME .

Ninety percent of all U.S. Doctors had
NO COLLEGE EDUCATION!

Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which w
ere condemned in the press AND the
government as "substandard."

Sugar cost four cents a pound, eggs were fourteen cents a dozen, coffee was fifteen cents a pound.

Most women only washed their hair
once a month, and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

Canada passed a law that prohibited
poor people from entering into their country for any reason.

Five leading causes of death in the U.S. Were:

1. Pneumonia and influenza
2. Tuberculosis
3. Diarrhea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke

The American flag had 45 stars.
Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii, and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet.
The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was only 30!!!!

Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and ice tea
h
adn't been invented yet.
There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.
Two out of every 10 U.S. Adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.

Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all
available over the counter at the local corner drugstores.
Back then pharmacists
said, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy
to the mind, regulates
the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian o
f health."

There were about
230 reported Murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A. !

Now I sent it to you and others all over the United States, possibly the world, in a matter of just Seconds !!!!!!!!!
 Just Try to imagine.....
What it may be like ....

In another
100 years !!!!!!!
IT STAGGERS THE MIND !!!!!!!!!

WOWZERONI!!! It does that! My own father was born 100 years ago this week, at home in Richmond, VA on October 19, 1907.

   Thanks, Herbie Darlin'!

3.      From Janice McCain Rose ('65) of VA - 10/09/07 - "cancer walk":

Hi Carol.....

Would it be too much to ask for you to run the request that was posted on the 9/27 issue of your newsletter regarding the cancer walk every time a newsletter goes out this week?

   Not at all!

Blake and Rena are both walking to take strides against breast cancer....and sadly so many of our classmates have been victims of this horrible disease.  Thanks so much.  ....and ANY amount donated is appreciated.

The links for the breast cancer walk site are below..... The first one is Rena's and the second site is Blake's.  The walk in DC is October 21st....so if you could run the reminder with each newsletter up to that date, it would be greatly appreciated.
