A side note, my computer has been very ill lately. I believe they call it M.D. crashitis. Anyway, it went away for a visit with a good tech doctor. When it came home again, it relapsed. So with some borrowed parts (from the grandkids' pcu until a new one arrives) I may have a good dose of the ups and downs. :) :) I am sure you understand perfectly about all these wonderful cpu diseases. I wonder when they will prefect some new immunizations. Instead of D.P.T.s they could call it M.D.C.s. LOL.

Pics of my trip to Minneapolis and the U of M's Sherlock Holmes room and collection. Five women fans of SH, Jeremy Brett and Laurie R. Kings Beekeeper's Apprentice series.

We swarm twice a year. Next is to be in Austin. The U of TX has some Conan Doyle/SHolmes materials.

Tim, the curator at the U of Minn was an exquisite host. The Mall of America was big and full of bargains.

MYSTERY OF THE MISSING BRIDGE UPDATE:

Perhaps this will stimulate some discussion among the more senior alumni.


If you look closely at this image, in the upper left corner you will see the very familiar water tower. But, look to the right of the tower. Is that not a bridge over the RR tracks? By my calculations, it is at 58th Street.	The same area today almost suggests that a bridge stood there. Does anybody have a recollection of a bridge at that location? Why and when was it removed?

Yes, there was a 58th Street wooden bridge built during W/W 2 for shipyard workers living in Betsy Lee Gardens and other workers living in that area also for the HRPE laundry located at Jefferson Avenue and Briarfield road which later became Crown Fastener. I believe that bridge was dismantled around 1946 or 1947..

The answer to part of your question is on page 134 of "Newport News, A Centennial History" published by the City of Newport News in 1996, where it says "A temporary span at 58th Street between Huntington and Marshall Avenues further improved access between the communities northern and southern halves."

It does not say when or why it was removed but since it says temporary and I, who lived on 64th street from 1947 to 1960, have no memory of it my assumption is that it was removed soon after the end of WWII in 1945.

If you do not have this book, you should, especially if you are interested in Newport News or Warwick County history because it is chock full of little known facts about Newport News. It is an attractive book and well worth the price. Lots of photos and well written and interesting text too. I bought mine at the War Memorial Museum in Huntington Park just a few years ago.

3. From Bill Lee (Warwick HS - '54) of NC - 10/25/07 - "The 58th Street Bridge":

As I recall, that particular (and short-lived) bridge was built during World War II to ease traffic over downtown bridges and the overpass at the James River Bridge entrance. Literally thousands of people traveled daily between the shipyard and housing developments that sprang up on the 'other side of the tracks' and east of Jefferson Avenue in what was then part of Warwick and Elizabeth City Counties.

Like so many war-time projects, it was built of wood, and because of the close proximity of the tracks to what was then Virginia Avenue (now Warwick Boulevard), it was pretty steep on that end. The other end had a more gentle slope, because of the distance between the tracks and Jefferson.

Sometime in the late 40s (I think) it was torn down. The reasoning may have been that s/y employment had dropped considerably to pre-war levels, but it may have also been because it might catch fire and/or fall down (bridges do that, from time to time, you know - especially wooden ones).

But before the bridge was demolished, the North End Fire Station was built at 48th and Virginia Avenue right next to the steepest part of the bridge.

NOTE to Dave: That building is depicted on page 291 of the 1946 book about Newport News. As far as I know, the building is still there, but no longer used as a fire station.

TRIVIA NOTE: Did you know that very early-on, Huntington Avenue was named after Lafayette? The name was changed in 1903 as a memorial to the founder of NNS, who had passed away in 1900 (see page 202, same book).

4. From Ron Miller ('59) of NC - 10/25/07 - "58th Street Bridge":

I asked Dad (age 94) about the bridge, and he remembers there being a 58th St bridge -- but doesn't remember when or why it was taken down. He thinks it was very old at the time and was possibly deemed unsafe. It may have been taken down during or shortly after WWII.

That picture was just one of those 3 pictures of the shipyard that the Cap'n had sent to you recently. It seemed to me that the pictures were probably taken during or before WWII. Notice the carrier at the 34th St pier -- that's definitely a WWII-era carrier. Also, the new ship under construction in the 52nd St drydock looks like it could be a battleship or carrier -- hard to say with just the hull put together at that point.

And, it looks like ALL the ships docked in the yard or under construction were military vessels, but again, that's hard to say for sure. Anyhow, that's why I suspect the photos are WWII vintage.

5. From Wayne Stokes ('65) of VA - 10/25/07:

In reply to Dave's question regarding "the bridge over the railroad tracks", is there a movie in that line?, if he is talking about a "structure" that runs parallel to Warwick and Jefferson Avenues, in between both, that is apparent in the "before" photo and "gone" in the after, I can tell him what it appears to have been!

Without divulging the why of it, during the course of "my work" I spent about 4 years at the railroad both on the "track gang" and at the coal piers. Additionally, in my early youth my father was a "yard conductor" (crew supervisor) there, also. Anyway, what Dave is seeing is an "earth works" of elevated tracks in the before photo. This anomaly was a man made hill with a few tracks upon it that "dropped down" to a "yard" with a great number of tracks in it. It was called the "Hump"! There is another item that is missing in the after photo and I can't find in the before photo( they are taken at different angles and area) that was there for the same purpose as the "Hump", the "Switch House".

The reason for these 2 things was to separate the different types of coal (yes, coal is not coal, there are different varieties) in their cars onto the same tracks for later loading at the coal piers. A locomotive would push a number of connected coal cars to the point on the "Hump" that would allow them to gravity fall down the other side onto the correct track for which they were destined. A worker in the "Switch House" would do as the title suggest and "throw the correct switch" to allow the cars to end up on the correct track for that type of coal.

If you notice in the "after photo" you can see that the earth is flat and a different color than it's surroundings and also goes east (toward Jefferson Avenue) beyond where the tracks were to cover the area of the "Switch House", thus where the "House" used to be. During my time at the "RR" there was a car derailment at that very spot and I was in the crew that repaired it!

If you recall when traveling over the 39th, 34th, 25th street and other bridges, you could look down and see an untold number of filled and unfilled coal cars sitting in the "yard"; remember?

One of the benefits I was able to obtain during my time at the railroad was to learn how to and drive a locomotive up and down the tracks! That part was fun!!

Now, on to the area of "what goes around, comes around", the nice list that Sepi sent in became more familiar as I read it. So, I reached over and picked up a list that Linda brought home from her work on 10-11-07 and read the very same thing!! Small world, but good advice.
