Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
Today's theme comes at the indirect suggestion of Joe Madagan ('57) of FL on 10/19/07:

The words of Shenandoah, "Bound Away" are indicative of an indentured servant being bound to serve. The origin of Shenandoah seems to be that of Scot-Irish immigrants entering the USA in Baltimore with a seafaring background and river flat boat skills, and as was the custom they would be required to work seven years as an indentured servant to work for their passage to the United States. Hence, the longing to see the rolling river again, and 'tis been seven long years since last he saw it, all while working on the wide Missouri River.

It recently was considered by the Commonwealth of Virginia as the State Song, and the Senate passed the resolution, but the House of Delegates did not pass the resolution.

..... And, if I may, no one sings Shenandoah like the Virginia Military Academy Glee Club.

Thanks so much, Joe! It's been one of my favorite songs since first I heard it over fifty years ago!

We have a Happy Birthday Two-Fer today! Terry Hunsucker ('65) of KY AND Randy Tate ('66) of DE are both celebrating! Tomorrow (formerly known as Navy Day), we'll have another Two-Fer: Carolyn Simpson Knight ('56) of VA AND Sepi ("Dimples") Dinwiddie-Prichard ('58) of NC are both having birthdays! On Sunday, Nancy Bigger Alligood ('56) of VA will be celebrating her birthday, and on Monday, Christine Wilson Starkman ('68) of CA will be as well!

OH, WOW!!! Yes, indeed, I remember my own such experience as though it were yesterday. It was Friday, October 15, 1954; I was seven years old. When Hurricane Hazel's arrival seemed imminent, Mama ( Maxine Frix Buckley - John Marshall HS - '25) ) picked me up from Magruder School. She dropped me off at the front door of our apartment and told me to run for it while she gathered up her stuff from the car. BUT - what happened was, as soon as I reached the front door, the hurricane picked me up a foot off the ground and carried me around to the back door where it deposited me - shaken but unharmed. I quickly scrambled upstairs. BUT - as there were no witnesses to my little misadventure, no one believed me until I was grown. SO - I don't like strong winds!

Carol,

Thought you might like to see these photos taken this week.

Fortunately, our home overlooking Mission Bay and Pacific Beach wasn't threatened.

More than 1300 homes, most of them expensive, and 200 businesses are burned to the ground.

The bright spot is that with no government intervention whatsoever (federal, state, or city), our cities and communities pulled together, and everyone and their pets has been housed, fed, and entertained for three days in homes and relief centers all over town. It has been a magnificent thing to behold. The donated food was so abundant, it began to go bad, so they said to stop bringing donations of food to the evacuation centers until further notice.

We have had 14 evacuees stay with us so far.

The dark side is that the cause of fires is probably arson. One man was arrested, caught trying to light a fire in the brush alongside a highway near one of our state parks.

As the smoke has cleared today in the burned out areas, the devastation we're seeing on TV is staggering.

Pray for the families that have lost everything.

Love Bethany's (Winona Harty - Siuslaw High, OR - '94 - of OH) idea for a Doctor Who theme, but unless I am missing something, you left off the 10th and current Doctor played by David Tennant. He is probably my favorite now, which is saying something given Tom Baker's version. Up until a couple of days ago, my computer theme (I formatted and each format brings a new theme) was based on Tennant's Doctor Who.

I loved taking Doctor Who naps so that I could stay up and watch it, and I'm so glad they revived the show and that the show is great.

AHA!!! That was a test of sorts, to spot the Doctor Who lovers among us. And you, of course, my Pudlet, may be one of the biggest Doctor Who fans of all time.

And Sunday afternoon naps will forever and always be called Doctor Who naps by me. In the early 80's when we lived in Hillsboro, MO, KETC, St. Louis' PBS affiliate, aired episodes of Doctor Who beginning at 10:00 PM on Sunday nights. The only way we could hope to stay awake long enough to see it (or to be able to function on Mondays if we did!), was to spend Sunday afternoons napping. Even young boys could be persuaded to nap with such an inducement.

"Do you want to see Doctor Who tonight? Well, then, my Little Chickadees, take your Doctor Who nap now so you'll be ready."
