Oh Cuz!
You made my day1 That song is from Raintree County with
Elizabeth Taylor. I love the song and the movie. Thanks.
Love, Pam
Glad you liked it!
![]()
Okay - it's all your fault! I bought a used copy of Raintree County (can't remember if I have read it or not) and a used copy of the movie. Can't wait - Amazon is great!
Good for you, Lady!

BTW,
Ross Lockridge who wrote the book was a well-known author
(from Indiana) who committed suicide when he was 34, leaving his wife and 4
small boys. Very sad.

Carol....wasn't there a movie using this song AND the words like back in the 50's? When I listened to the song I knew I had heard it before.....but I can't remember who was in the movie......but it was one of those famous 50's love stories....hmmmm....maybe Elizabeth Taylor??? and it was about this special tree that was out in the middle of nowhere.....does any of this ring any bells??????
Yes, indeed,
Janice!
The movie was released in 1957, and co-starred
Montgomery Clift.
I was really surprised at the response to this song - including from those who did not wish to be quoted. Somehow, I've only seen the middle of that movie, and I've always associated the song more with Andy Williams than anything else (?!?)
But I'm so glad y'all enjoyed it; regardless of the images it raises in our minds, it's a lovely, simple song.
Thank you all
so much!

From Norm Covert ('61) of MD - 11/05/07 - "Veterans
Day":
Many of our Typhoon classmates are taking part in Veterans Day remembrances the week. We will honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to the Nation, as well as living veterans of military service.
On Sunday November 11th, Veterans Day, a unique ensemble of Frederick, MD, Brass players (Bugle to BBb Tuba) will play Echo Taps as a prelude to the annual observance in our Memorial Grounds Park, where we have monuments to veterans of all of America’s wars and conflicts.
We will be spaced to link two historic cemeteries, spanning almost a mile down our main street. Each of us will play two stanzas of the haunting Bugle Call in overlapping sequence. Because of conflict with church services, we will begin at 12:30 p.m. instead of the traditional Armistice Day (WWI) start time of the “11th Hour, of the 11th Day of the 11th Month.” What a sound and tribute it will be!
Other communities will be mirroring
our effort. The history of this musical remembrance may be found at
http://xeml.buglesacrossamerica
Norm Covert (’61 MD)
Amen
to that! WOWZERONI, Norm, this is just marvelous! I'm so
glad you're able to participate in this celebration!

From Sepi Dinwiddie
Prichard ('58) of NC- 11/05/07 - "Family of Man":
Carol,
.....Okay ! You asked me at my Birthday Party
about the story my sister,
Joan (Dinwiddie Smith - '63 - of VA),
told
Eleanor (Buckley Nowitzky - '59 - of NC) at the
Buckroe Bash, and I promised you
that I would send it to you. It is a cherished family story and one that keeps
on giving. I think it will be of interest to just about everyone that reads
this wonderful Newsletter that
you put your heart, soul, blood, sweat and sometimes tears into.
Back in 1947, our mother,
Bunny Dinwiddie (John Marshall HS - '35
- of VA), was called by Buxton Hospital
to come and give her special type of blood to save a baby's life. Mom
immediately dropped everything she was doing, jumped in the family car and sped
to the hospital. The donated blood went to the newborn son of Dr. and Mrs.
Murray Dick, an ENT doctor that a lot of us went to. The transfusion was a
success and later the son,
Jim Dick ('65 - of FL - b. 27 June 1947) and my sister went to school
together. They grew up and both eventually left the area.
In the early '80's, both returned with their respective families. In 1989, Joan's son, Richard, met Jim Dick's daughter, Heather, while they were working at Chi-Chi's. The next year, Richard and Heather married and soon produced two lovely daughters. It's a wonderful story for people that give blood and wonder, while they are doing so, about the recipient of their donation. Mother knows; her precious, life saving blood is TWICE mixed in the hearts and veins of her two, now teenage great-granddaughters. They are beautiful girls, with excellent manners, mesmerizing smiles and sweet personalities, the best of both 'Blue Blood Southern Families.' Mother is now 91, but still remembers the call that requested HER lifesaving blood, that just keeps on giving. They are the amazing 'family miracles' we cherish and love, and Mother's gift to my sister that she had no idea at the time she was giving. Joan was only three.
I remember the 'Thank You' gift Mother later
received from the grateful parents - a beautiful Alligator Handbag, with a
$25.00 check tucked inside. Twenty-five dollars in those days was a lot of
money; Mother put it in the bank and figured that was all. But now, of course,
we all know, there was more to come. Thanks to Mindi and Kathy,
the two sparkling daughters of Richard, Granddaughters of Joan,
Great-granddaughters of Bunny Dinwiddie, and my winsome great-nieces that are
the result of a woman that answered the call of desperate parents. Thanks, Mom
!

From
Linda May Bond Crayton ('66) of VA - 11/05/07 - "
Al Farber
('64 - of GA) - Response ":
Al, I could not resist a response........
| Al's Version: | Linda May's Version: |
| # 10 - You can trade an old 44 for a New 22.. | !0. It is American men's favorite pastime. MANY DIE TRYING. |
| #9 - You can keep one gun at home and have another for when you are on the road... | 9. Obviously you're in the wrong club. They have names for these men, Sailors, Truckers, Traveling Salesmen, Pilots, Butchers, Bakers and Candle Stick Makers.......... |
| #8 - If you admire a friends gun and tell him so, he will let you try it out a few times.... | 8. Most men I know do but they wait until you're not looking. It's called not telegraphing a punch. |
| #7 - Your primary gun does not mind if you keep another gun for a backup.... | 7. Untrue, that's why, in America, there is only a very small piece of Nevada were they can reside. |
| #6 - Your gun will stay with you even if you run out of Ammo... | 6. Yes she will! It's the gun who
looks for NEW ammo to see if it helps. Hey, fellah, you glad to see me or is that (another) gun in your pocket? |
| #5 - A gun does not take up a lot of closet space.... | 5. Why keep her in the closet? |
| #4 - Guns function normally every day of the month... | 4. A rumor started by men who couldn't keep up. |
| #3 - A Gun does not ask, "Do these new grips make me look Fat?"... | 3. Women are suppose to be fat or we'd look like you. (That's another discussion.) She's fishing for a compliment, obviously she's using the wrong bait or she wouldn't have you. |
| #2 - A Gun does not mind if you go to sleep after you use it... | 2. If she was as finished as you were, she'd be asleep too. |
| #1 - YOU can BUY a SILENCER for a GUN | 1. Sure you can - say this to a woman --- it's free. |
OHHHHH, you naughty
babies!!! Thanks, Linda May!

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL -
11/05/07:
Bill Lee (Warwick HS - '54 - of NC) comes through once again
with his vast knowledge of ships, especially those vessels built by
Newport News Shipbuilding.
AHA!!!
Thanks, Joe!
I'm
always astounded by your unfailingly gracious wordings!
My attention to detail is better known as
"Obsessive Compulsive Disorder" by those who are trying to be only semi-polite!
But do I always like to know where people are living, despite my habit of
occasionally "moving" them back to the Sacred Soil of Virginia!
Left to my own devices, I very well might play "Autumn Leaves" several times a year, as I do love it so, but I made up all those Ridiculous Rules, doncha know. However, we have used that lovely song three times:
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/09-22-04-NNHS-First-Day-of-Autumn.html
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/09-22-05-NNHS-Autumn-Leaves.html
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/09-27-07-NNHS-Autumn-Leaves.html
I believe the name of the pianist you were trying to recall is Roger Williams, and if so, you might enjoy this link:
http://play.rhapsody.com/rogerwilliams/thegreatestpopularpianist/autumnleaves
And for a bit more background, see here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autumn_Leaves_(song)
And Bill Lee's knowledge of such ship-related matters is indeed legendary!
Thanks again, Adonis!
