11/09/05 - NNHS Newsletter - Little Deuce Coupe
|
Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
I'm still running behind
(what a big surprise there!), and I'm working on three things at once, and still
not
making it to the top of the barrel, so I'm just going to stop in the middle, and
hope that I finish this evening.

CBD,
You have become the all knowing keeper
of the flame that shines upon all truth!
WILD GIGGLES!!! Thanks, Wayne Honey! ....... One of the (Magical Mystery Tour) photos showed the old gym and stated that the window on the second level was where Julie used to sit and scream at us during games. If that's true, then "they" have covered up the seats on the first floor of the home side of the old gym <remember that on the home side there were 2 levels> and only a wall and 2nd story seating for the visitors side in the old gym. Also, we had white metal rounded backboards in the old gym, not clear fiberglass as shown in the photo. We as players and those that had "regular" gym, didn't get to use fiberglass 'boards at home until the new Julie Conn Gym was built.
TC!
RWS Ah - those images would be found here: http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/10-28-05-NNHS-Well-Meet-Again.html http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/10-31-05-NNHS-Happy-Halloween.html Oh, why don't I just make that page now?!? Try this: http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/Magical-Mystery-Tour-05.html - brand new page. It obviously isn't linking to anything but the front page yet. This wasn't what I had in mind for the page, but I thought it would be super-quick. I was wrong, of course...... But you've touched on one of the eerie parts of the Magical Mystery Tour. Things were just the same after 40 years - only so very, very different! Thanks again, Wayne Honey! |

John W. Daniel

Hi Carol....
We have never met...my cousin who is a 1963 NNHS graduate told me about this site and I LOVE it! Hi, June! We're glad you're having fun! I graduated from HHS 62 but I did go
to John W. Daniel School 1950-53
(1st through 3rd grade). Also I am kin (my sister is his sister-in-law)
to
My teacher at John W. Daniel was
Ruth Savin who stayed with our class from 1st through 3rd grade.
There were four of us girls who became close friends during that time -
Betty Smith Carey, Joan, and Julia. I actually ran into
Betty at my husband's 45th WHS reunion this September (she is married to
Jim Carey, a WHS 60 classmate of my husband). Betty and I
had not seen each other since 1953! She mailed me a picture of her and
our friends Joan and Julia taken back then. Joan's last name is something
like Darnell but not sure, and I can't think of Julia's at all. We
would love to re-connect to these old friends but have no idea if they
stayed in Newport News. Betty graduated from Warwick HS. I
hesitate to give permission to post this in one of your newsletters. What
I was wondering, is there a site where I could find a list of all students
that attended John W. Daniel from 1950 to 1953? If I could get the exact
names of these two friends, I would like you to post it in your letter to
see if anyone remembered them, and could let me know. I am attaching copy
of picture.
We probably violate privacy issues on a regular basis, but we try to be sensitive to such matters when we can. I know of no such site for Daniel School. This is probably your best bet. I've posted your image there, and we'll see if we have a response. Sometimes we hear a great deal, and sometimes we hear nothing at all. It would be super if y'all were all able to connect after all these years!
I lived across the street from
Hutchens Chevrolet on 34th Street
when I attended Daniel School...so all these stories are so fascinating!
(The "Our Old Car Dealerships" section is one of the three things I'm developing at the moment...) My husband and I now live in Verona, VA in the Shenandoah Valley....
I sent this first to the
nnhs65@nc.rr.com
address and saw where you have this
address.. so I'm sending it to this one too.
Yes, sometimes that works (to
a degree) and sometimes it doesn't.....
Thanks for any help you can provide. June Veneris Collie HHS 62 Thank you, June!
We wish you well! |

OH, COOL BEANS!!! I bombed out trying to post your program, so I'll try this all again after I obtain some technical assistance.... That is going to be so super, Sarah Sugah! Thanks for sharing that with us! Meanwhile, those of y'all wanting to celebrate the Virginia Choral Society's 75th Season with Miss Sarah, just let one of us know! HEY! How did we get
to be senior citizens?!? I'm still just a kid!

Carol, Hope all is well with you. Still enjoying all the Newsletters that you send out. Girl, when do you have time to sleep?
All seems well at the moment, thanks!
And Honey, sleep is vastly overrated. I usually manage to get six
hours of it each night whether I need it or not. It's my housework
that's being neglected!

No, I'm sorry, I do not know the cause of Donald's death. He was such
a nice boy, too. I found this listing on the
SSDI, but
without knowing his middle initial or birth date, I can't be sure that it's
the same Donald Ryan:
I think almost all the
information on that Memoriam page came
from Cheryl Mays Howard ('66) of VA. I really need to find
someone from the Class of '67 with an Anchor and a scanner and the time to
send me large-sized scans of all their senior portraits and activities which
I could then crop, reduce, and enter, but it would take a goodly amount of
time. I'm toying with the idea of adding their junior portraits, but
it still wouldn't list their activities. I did add this picture
yesterday of Katie Haan's (Spaulding - '64 - of CA) little brother.
As a friend of the family, I always called him "Pietie", but I understand
his school friends called him "Bill". |

Carol, While I can’t TRULY appreciate all of the content of your newsletters because there are so many people in them that I didn’t know and landmarks that are not as meaningful to me as they are to “Typhooners”, I REALLY love it. I can’t explain the feelings that I get when I read so many old friends remembering good times together and conversing with one another via your media. Everyone owes you a huge debt of gratitude for the wonderful service you (and I’m sure others) provide.

Chandler Darlin', What a nice thing to say! Thank you so much - you made my day! We have made ourselves a very strange thing here. Some of these people (such as
Chip Clark-
'65 - of Northern VA) I've known since I was six years old. A great
number I met once I began attending NNHS (such as
Jean Poole Burton - '64 - of RI).
Quite a few (such as
Evelyn Fryer Fish - '58 -
of TX) I knew only through
my sister
(Eleanor Buckley Nowitzky - '59 - of NC), but have come to know
recently. Some of them I've
never met and barely know. Many others I've met only online but have come to
know quite well - and I delight in them all!And the fact that it holds any interest whatsoever for people from surrounding schools is surreal and wonderful! I cannot even begin to tell you how happy I am that you joined us! Obviously your input enriches the Newsletters and the site itself, but as you were the stuff dreams were made of - MY dreams were made of - well, that carries it to three whole new levels! Old fantasies rarely come true to the extent that mine have! Thanks again! |

| You are very, very welcome. |

Vietnam Era (60's, 70's Music)":
|
WOWZERONI, Rip! This is such a cool page! It's full of beautiful Vietnam graphics and images, and at first appears to be a memorial page (just in time for Veterans Day!) - which of course it is. But it has four long play lists of oldies from that time, and it is mesmerizing! I started playing some Tom Jones and Bobby Goldsboro songs and then I started crying my eyes out and then I had to take a long break. So today's Newsletter is even later than usual, and it's all your fault, Rip! GIGGLES! Seriously, thanks so much, Rip! This is a treasure - a beautiful and moving memorial to that time and especially to all those who served! And my eyes are still stinging....... |

Hey
Carol
As mentioned in the
Newsletter of 11-8-05,
about a "50's-60's" cruise from Florida - yes, any travel agent could book
that.
Oh, yes, that's true. I was just recalling Brownie's telling us that last year only people who had booked through Harmon Travel could enter the shows on that particular cruise. Due to long-term contractual arrangements between the performers and Harmon Travel, no amount of money offered onboard could alter that fact. So if the shows themselves were the draw, then..... For the less adventurous crowd Carnival Cruises does have a 2-night cruise to nowhere Oct. 14, 2006 (Saturday thru Monday AM) leaving from Norfolk, VA, spending 2 nights at sea with all the events of any cruise... shows, FOOD and anything else you could imagine... My wife and I plan to look into it; I am sure our friends at Warwick Travel could help with the arrangements... Maybe we can call it our "turning 60 Cruise"... Just a thought, but maybe we could get a number of Typhoons and make it a great party... Sounds
great to me, Tom! I remember that cruise idea was discussed quite a
bit last year. I've heard some other plans being considered now.
They all sound super! Of course, I'm extraordinarily easy to please!
Meeting for lunch somewhere sounds good to me! GIGGLES!!!
It was great to see you at the 40th for 1965... keep
up the great work...
BLUE AND GOLD LIVES FOREVER. Remember there is no news like Newport News, as Coach Conn would say... TYPHOONS FOREVER...
TOM FLAX (nnhs 64)
Thanks, Tommy! It's always good to hear from you! |

From Jerry Blanchard ('62) of VA - 11/08/05 - "Theaters":
I hope this will be of interest. In 1958
I was 15 years old and had my mom sign a permission slip to get a job
working in the old Warwick Theater.
I started work at 14 cents an hour. I worked 12 hours a week - eight hours
on Saturdays and the rest during the week. I worked there one year and went
to the James Theater. I started there at 65
cents an hour.
Max Pollard ('62)
and I were the best of pals, and worked there for 3 years. They played the
first
Brigitte Bardot
movie there. Max and I could not buy a ticket, but we worked the whole week
it showed. WOW! Those were the days. Some of the tales I could tell. But
with Max gone, they remain my memories of days long gone, but not
forgotten......Jerry Blanchard (class of 62) West Point, Va..... Hey, Jerry! It's good to hear from you! Yes, of course, your story is of interest! What a hoot! An entire week of the forbidden Bardot! WOW! Brigitte was always one
of my idols. I thought the quality of my life would be vastly improved
if I looked just like her ----- or
I posted your memory on the two theater pages: http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/old-movie-theaters.html http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/warwick-theater.html http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/james.html Switching gears abruptly, I think I'll never forget the shock I felt on learning of Max's death five years ago. It just didn't seem possible. It still doesn't. Thanks, Jerry! Keep those stories coming! |

Little Deuce Coupe
(The Beach Boys)
Little deuce coupe
You don’t know what I got
Little deuce coupe
You don’t know what I got
Well I’m not braggin’ babe so don’t put me down
But I’ve got the fastest set of wheels in town
When something comes up to me he don’t even try
Cause if I had a set of wings man I know she could fly
She’s my little deuce coupe
You don’t know what I got
(my little deuce coupe)
(you don’t know what I got)
Just a little deuce coupe with a flat head mill
But she’ll walk a thunderbird like (she’s) it’s standin’ still
She’s ported and relieved and she’s stroked and bored.
She’ll do a hundred and forty with the top end floored
She’s my little deuce coupe
You don’t know what I got
(my little deuce coupe)
(you don’t know what I got)
She’s got a competition clutch with the four on the floor
And she purrs like a kitten till the lake pipes roar
And if that ain’t enough to make you flip your lid
There’s one more thing, I got the pink slip daddy
And comin’ off the line when the light turns green
Well she blows ’em outta the water like you never seen
I get pushed out of shape and it’s hard to steer
When I get rubber in all four gears
She’s my little deuce coupe
You don’t know what I got
(my little deuce coupe)
(you don’t know what I got)
She’s my little deuce coupe
You don’t know what I got
(my little deuce coupe)
(you don’t know what I got)
She’s my little deuce coupe
You don’t know what I got
