Mike
O'Neal (WHS) does serve a fine meal at a reasonable price, and we
always make it a point to visit there for a good meal when we journey back to
the Peninsula, and also chat a few minutes with Mike.
WILD GIGGLES - Good advice!!!
Thanks, Joe!

From Renee Helterbran Benton ('59)
of VA - 11/09/07 - "Luigi's":
In
response to
Dave Spriggs ('64 - of VA)
and his search for Luigi's,
Norm
Covert ('61 - of MD) is not the only one who has a vivid memory
of Luigi's. It was certainly there on 33rd Street in the 50's, especially
between '55 and '59. You need to go back and research again!! Surely
there is a record somewhere.
Stay tuned, Renee - we're still looking and gathering. As Dave said, ".....I never said that Luigi's never existed. All I said was that it did not appear in those particular directories. It may well have a listing in the 1956, but the Norfolk Kirn Library collection stops at 1957. Just to be sure, I also looked for a listing in Warwick County and Hampton..... but anything is possible. Eventually, we will know the answer. When I am next in NN, I will check the Hilton Hill's collection as well as their old telephone directories."
Meanwhile, thanks for the confirmation of the 33rd Street address. I've created a Luigi's page now as we continue searching.

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/OOSG-H-M.html
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/luigis.html - brand new page!
Personally - and I have absolutely
NO memory of any of these places, so bear in mind that this is NOT an
expert opinion, I'm beginning to wonder if Luigi's and
John's Little Place might not be one and the same. As a case in
point, the Stuart Gardens
variety shop was officially named Bernard's. I knew not a soul who called
it anything but Minnie's - as might be obvious from the conversations on
this page:
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost
Also, thanks to David's detective work
in giving me the official name and address for Art's Coffee Shop, I
spotted an ad in the 1956 Anchor, so I attached it to that page.

Thanks
for your help, Renee!

From Butch Ragland ('63 of CO - 11/09/07:
Hi Carol,
I have been pretty busy lately and haven't written. But I had to drop a
line to say hello and thanks for the birthday greetings on
10/05/07!
But I have to admit, my real reason for writing this time is to say many
thanks to good old
"Dave Spriggs" and the info he passed on about the local hot
dog stands. I have been following the weekly discussion about the old
eateries and was beginning to think I was going "MAD"!
I kept remembering "Mike's Hot Dog Stand", but no one seemed to remember it;
then sure enough Dave comes up with it. I had checked a Google Sat Map on
Sunday and remembered the Hot Dog Stand was located just up the street on
31st Street; but of course I see that location is now a parking lot!
MY VOTE IS FOR MIKE'S! To this day I feel his HD's were the best!
Well, enough from this old man!
God Bless,
Butch Ragland, NNHS '63
Thanks for sharing
that, Butch!
