April Fool's Day, and has
played a variety of tricks - none of which were very
funny - on me in the last several days. They will become apparent in
today's Newsletter. YOWZERS!!!

NOPE!!!
This was the funniest trick yet! I now have all the goodies you sent
twice! It is highly exciting, and I am looking forward to processing
it all on Monday. My weekend has been crammed to the gills by people
who don't seem to appreciate my dream of becoming a hermit. Images
take me longer to process than anything else, so regrettably, after they
(and you!) have already waited so long, there will be an even longer
delay. I am so sorry, Fred!
No problem. They're all here now, just awaiting my attention.

| Carol, I would like to submit the attached JPEG images (one small and one large of each) to be added to the Briarfield Elementary School page. All the images (except the one with me standing in front of the school) are from the "School Memories" miniature photo albums (produced by Delmar Studios) that students received every year. Two years are covered, 1955-56 and 1956-57. I was in the fourth and fifth grades respectively. One shows my 5th grade teacher, Ms. Edwards. The "My Favorite Classmates" page shows Mike Barnes ('64) and Clarence (Clyde) Point ('64). On the page with 6 photos, I know who they are except the top row, left and middle. If you can't recognize them, I will send you the names. The three females should be fairly easy to ID, and one was very well known. I don't know if you'll want to, or even be able to, post the names on the web site due to privacy concerns. But I'm sure none of these individuals look anything like their images of 50 years ago. Hey Carol.
My email has been down for a week or more.
I moved and didn't understand about resetting email addresses and all that
stuff. So anyway, if the newsletter "kicked back to you" and your system
knocked my address out of the group, please reset it.
I really enjoyed the pics from your
reunion. And I never met
Chandler (Nelms - Hampton HS - '63 - of
MD) , but his dad was a great family
doctor who meant a great deal to my mother, my brother and myself. After
Dick
(Krause - '57) and I married we would drive from Newport News to his office.
The drive didn't matter because Dr. Nelms and his staff were so
special.
Anyway, happy day.

Thanks, Joan! As often as I was in Dr. Nelms' office, I'm surprised that I never saw y'all there! Our family all thought very highly of Dr. Nelms - especially my father, who served with him in WWII, and was not given to passing out praise lightly. We thought nothing of driving over to see him. There was never any question of seeing another physician. |

It was interesting reading
this material....I knew nothing about a "pumpkin globe" at the
corner of Buxton and Chesapeake Avenues. That was interesting. Fred, I certainly hope you will come to Virginia soon as I would really like to meet you and show you my collection. I have done N.N.H.S. Class reunion memorabilia displays for the last couple of years....Last year, I did the class of 1964 and this year I did my class, 1960 and then the class of 1965. My reunion was 45 years and the others were 40 years....I enjoyed so much being invited to these reunions as I know SOOO many people in each class...I remember everyone and enjoy renewing acquaintances....some I would probably never, ever see again had I not had the opportunity to attend the reunion.
Dave Spriggs ('64 - of
VA) gave me a most interesting literary magazine for N.N.H.S. 1905....yes, 100 and 1/2 years old....I was so fascinated at the way people thought back then.....one poem, somewhat paraphrased said, "A fly and a flea in a flue...imprisoned, now what could they do? The fly said, 'let us flee', the flea said, 'let us fly!'....so they flew through a flaw in the flue." I don't know why I think this is such a hoot?.....I shared this with some of my coworkers and one real brainy guy mentioned the NEXT DAY...."You know Fred, I have really been thinking about that poem....a flea cannot fly....they hop; hence, to get out of the flue, I figured that he must have hopped on the back of the fly and then, they flew through the flaw in the flue!" Can you imagine anyone (even I) dissecting that poem to that degree?
I think I mentioned that I
am retiring the end of this month.....you can email me at this
address through November.....I plan on getting a new computer; however, it may not be until January....I will give you my email address at that time..... PLEASE stay in touch. You are certainly a SPECIAL person to know as are my friends, Dave Spriggs and 
Carol Buckley Harty ('65 - of NC).I am so blessed to have met Dave
and Carol....believe me.
Oh, one more thing.....someone just this week gave me a small scrapbook from the January
(?) 1930 N.N.H.S. Graduating class. The yearbook says February....back then they had Feb. and June graduating classes, I know. This class graduated on Jan. 30 or 31st. Anyway, it has newspaper articles, pictures around the flagpole of students...and of course, there are always those I know in EVERY class....Mabe Lamb is one of those.....a friend of our family...I knew ALL of his family....His son is  Jimmy Lamb ('63).
Mabe Lamb died within the last year....he retired from the
Shipyard
at the same time as my father......the scrapbook was approx. 9 by 6 and
was like a little booklet; hence, it did not seem old and moldy....the
cover was like soft cardboard. It is loaded with so
much....autographs.....names of all teachers this student had, many of
whom I had in the years I was there....It is a prize to me. The person
who found this said it was out to the street being thrown away and they
went through the trash to find it?? Gosh, I am so blessed! One of the
students was Jack Clifton, I think that was his name....he went on
to be a professional writer, I heard....I actually have HIS very own
yearbook for 1930....with his name written by him in the front.Well, I must close for now....take care and stay in touch.

still want to look like somebody else - probably more so now than
before! Maybe that contentment and self-assurance is one of those
grown-up qualities I never developed because I chose never to grow up.....

Yeah, one would think the Navy would
paint everything blue and gold. Perhaps it's because the shipyard
actually owns the building, who knows? That was tacky, but actually
I was more horrified by the railings being painted florescent magenta in
place of their original honest steel grey.

Additionally, as I have written you previously the "wall protection
mats" behind the basket at that end were BLUE, NOT
red, like that "other" school. Played there, too! They were very kind
and spoke my name on every occasion they could! I knew a good number
of those truly good people. They are good people.
Back to the gym, the door on the
other side of the wall from the one under
Coach Conn's window is where
we sat, on the side of the floor, for home games<to our fans' left>
while our visiting teams sat at the end of the floor in an area that I
think was once used as a stage(?); to our fans right. Was that area
once a stage? I know it was "recessed" a bit away from the playing
floor. That would be the 30th street end and where you had to buy your
tickets, sometimes they let us players in for free! OK, bad joke.
The photo of Eleanor (Buckley
Nowitzky - '59 - of NC) and
Dave (Arnold - '65 - of VA) standing by Coach Conn's window
shows a spot where I experienced one of the "biggest" scares of my
young life! It ended up being positive and self-serving, so there is
no need to share it. The photo brought back the memory. It just can't
have been 40 years since we departed!!

Hi
Carol, The Peninsula has an incredible automotive history. Many revolutionary ideas along with great visionaries helped shape not only the local scene but nationally as well. Here is a brief history of the local automotive dealers. Abbitt Chevrolet became Casey Chevrolet in the late 50's when Washington DC businessman Arthur M. Casey purchased the dealership on Warwick Blvd. Many dealers got their start there. Ken Hall founder of Hall Automotive, the late Tom Riddle founder of Riddle Honda and Acura, the late Toby Hallet of Midway GM in Pocomoke City, the late Mike Sofikitis ('61), and Dale Parsons of Dale Parsons Chevrolet and many others cut their automotive teeth there. The old Shackleford Dodge downtown became Peninsula Dodge in the mid 70's after being purchased by the late Bill Wiley who also owned Tidewater Dodge in Norfolk. It is now Oyster Point Dodge. Nick Allen Buick was in the old Guaranteed Foods building across from NNHS. It moved down to Warwick Blvd into what was then considered on of the most modern facilities in the country. The building had a large body shop in the basement. It became Harbor Buick in the 80's after being purchased by the Casey Group and the franchise is now known as Casey Buick on Jefferson Ave and Morris Blvd. Center Ford, beside NNHS was owned by Johnny Rollins " The working man's friend." Before that it was known as Hudgins Ford and is now owned by Hall Automotive. John Abbitt operated the Packard dealership on Huntington Ave and also the Lincoln Mercury dealership at 42nd & Huntington. He later opened the first Abbitt Chevrolet location at Randolph Road & Warwick Blvd before moving to 11061 Warwick Blvd. The original Tucker franchise was on 34th and Huntington and M. P. Breon was the unfortunate dealer. Peninsula Chevrolet Cadillac was owned by Jim Maume and was at 202 West Queen Street. It became Beveridge Chevrolet in 1955 and was bought by Bill Lewis around 1960 and now is known as Hampton Chevrolet. The Cadillac franchise was picked up by Harvey White and was known as Harvey White Oldsmobile Cadillac. When he closed doors the franchise was not renewed in Hampton because of the strength of Suttle Oldsmobile Cadillac in Newport News. Bowditch Ford was originally at Harpersville Road and Jefferson Ave and trading as Bill Bailey Ford. Bowditch moved to the present location on Warwick Blvd in the 60's. Spratley Rodgers Ford on Armistead Avenue was purchased by George Thompson in the early 60's and moved to Mercury Blvd and now operates as Freedom Ford. Merrimac Motors on Kecoughtan road was founded by Neil Carwile and is now operated by Pomoco who was founded by Dois Rosser in Poquoson. Poquoson Motors later moved to Mercury Blvd and operates dealerships all over the region. Bing Burford operated Burford Buck on North King Street. These are just to name a few and many lives have been shaped by the automotive industry in our country. It's great to see the interest shown in the history of Peninsula dealers. Enjoy the day. Dear Carol, Thank you so much for getting my father’s e-mail address out to the NNHS alumni. He has received some 40 messages and has asked me to send the following message to you. Please publish it as a group response as he just began using e-mail on his 79th birthday and is not a fast typist. His message follows:
Greetings to all my former students. I think of all of you often. NNHS was the best school in the nation at that time and had the best student body! It was most enjoyable for me and I loved every minute of it. I turned 80 in September 2005 and I am now considered an old geezer. I retired from Walt Disney World after 25 years of service. When I retired, I was General Manager of Special Events in all four parks. Some of the functions that came under my Department were Christmas, Easter, Candle Light Ceremony, Grad Night, and opening of all the parks including international openings (Tokyo, Euro-Disney). One of my biggest projects was preparing the Millennium Celebration including various locations in Florida and South Carolina. My Department was responsible for building all the stages and props that were used by the entertainment division. In my job I met many celebrities including Tom Cruise, Kevin Costner, Carol Burnett, Dolly Parton, and Presidents Nixon, Bush (Sr.), and Reagan. But my favorite was Vanna White. We became very good friends and I consider her a very nice young lady. In regards to Evelyn Casey Sneed’s ('57 - of VA) question, I left NNHS in 1959, went to the Newport News Shipyard, and from there to Disney World, so I have had three great careers during my lifetime. Evelyn, Gene (Edmunds) and I picked the “dawn beauties” on the basis of character and looks. Journalistic abilities had nothing to do with it. And to Harry Covert ('57), I am glad you have done so well in the world of journalism. I would be glad to hear from any of you by phone or e-mail (nnhs43@cfl.rr.com). Thought you would enjoy this Newsletter. You will find a new candidate for your Famous Marine pages, Keith Jackson who is an ABC sportscaster who is an expert in college football and does a fine job of calling these exciting games. He would make a great addition to your website. Hope you get to post Harold "Dog Tags" Dangler there soon. And I certainly thought I was going to do that before yesterday, and here it is today, and I still have not managed it. I know you must think I'm a piece of work. I'm not sure if I ever explained to you that by and large, additions to the Famous Military pages are the most time-consuming thing I do. Fortunately, most of the work on the pages was accomplished before everything went totally out of control. Even 14 hours a day does not seem to be sufficient now. I've not forgotten; I simply have not accomplished it. I'm so sorry, and I do apologize. I just cannot seem to finish it all. If you do not mind, please forward this newsletter to Chandler Nelms (HHS - '63) of MD. I want him to see how our little website is reconnecting Marines and Marine Veterans.
