   Hi, Doug!  It's good to hear from you!  You know, I've seen Mr. Loving three times this year - at last year's reunion, at the Memorial Service for Mr. McIntosh this summer, and again on October 22.  I even sat at his table, and I still cannot give you a definitive answer.  However, I'm 92.8% sure that he served in the Navy, rather than the Marines.

   Last year,    Alice Fowler Edwards ('64 - of VA) brought an old Beacon to the Friday night session of '64's Glorious Open Reunion.  The teacher spotlight interviewed both Coach Powers and Mr. Loving.  I know it said that Coach Powers was a Naval officer during WWII.  I think Mr. Loving was as well.  Maybe Alice could check that for us if we asked her, "pretty please"???

 The daughter of   Edward (Buster) Kerlin and Linda Estes passed away Wednesday night. I do not have my yearbooks handy, but Edward graduated from NNHS in 1964. Linda graduated around the time it closed (70-72 ??)

   I first met Buster back in 1959 through the Summer Band program which Mr. Wilson used to conduct in the old band room on the first floor (was that Room 107?).  I am so sorry to learn of this tragic news.  Our sincerest sympathies are extended to Ed and Linda and their families.

   Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention, Mike.  I'll be posting more on this later.

   Thanks, Jo Ann.  I haven't checked this by most of the people who took the Magical Mystery Tour, but my sister and I both distinctly recall the Pinkerton guard saying that the shipyard now owned the building.  I was quite surprised, as I thought the Navy owned it.  I also have the impression that the latest transfer was fairly recent.  However, I will admit to being so highly excited at that moment that I may not have been thinking clearly.  Does anyone else remember this???

   You're a hoot, Joe!  I've always and ever had a serious cash-flow problem, especially since I began working non-stop on the site.  It did wonders at drying up my other sources of revenue, simply because I had no time to devote to any frivolous activities which might actually generate me any revenue.  So what would you have me say, Sweetie?

What funny mail from the "girls"! I always wanted to be short and cute like    Pauline Collins (Shofner - '65 - of VA) and    Dianne Adams (Puckette - '65 - of VA). I was always taller than everyone - even some of the boys I wanted to date. Hey - just look at your graduation picture - Why would you want to look like anyone else?

As for now - I am proud of my wrinkles. I earned them all. Some bring back good memories; some, bad. But they are mine and I hope I live to get a lot more.

   This does get funnier all the time, doesn't it?  So the tall girls wanted to short and cute, and the short girls wanted to be tall and elegant?!?  For unknown reasons, despite the fact that I was always a head shorter than everyone else, I always assumed that I was going to be tall - eventually.  I thought I was just behind, but sooner or later would catch up with everyone.  When I stopped at 5' 2-1/4", I was quite upset.  I never did seem to make peace with that.  It still infuriates me when I go to reach for something and have to grab a foot stool like a sissy-britches.  I sometimes think I spend half my life standing on my tippy-toes trying to see something just out of my sight.

   But you're right - I never did seem to have the "problem" of being taller than my dates!

   And I'm not overly fond of my wrinkles, either.  And my teenaged skin has inexplicably returned with a vengeance.  A 58-year old woman is not "posta" be having the skin problems of a 13-year old.  "It ain't right."  I wonder if my dermatologist, Dr. Phillip Murray, is still practicing in Hampton?  He could clear up this mess.  Maybe I'm just generally disgruntled, whadaya think?!?  It seems that we're back to that question of emotional maturity again!  GIGGLES!!!

Thanks to Allen Turpin and his father,   Bobby Turpin ('58) of VA we have this outstanding photo of Willie Turpin ('57) of VA on the left, and John Herman Wiedman ('57) deceased serving their first tour at sea in the United States Naval Reserve (now known as the Navy Reserve) aboard an Attack Cargo Vessel.

   Thank you so much, Herbie!  (I had to open a separate window for this so that I wasn't hearing both sound tracks simultaneously.  Your computer may behave differently; that's a bit outside my ken.)

   I remember watching this on TV with my family when I was a young girl.  What a treat!  As I listened again, tears began streaming down my face, probably from not only the moving content, but for the mixed memories of a precious time.

   (Herb celebrated his 81st birthday on October 22 while we celebrated at the Reunion.)

I learned of the NNHS Web site last summer from my sister    Franki Satisky ('68 - of VA), who communicates with    Sandi (Bateman) Chestnut ('65 - of VA). Sandi was a neighbor on Ash Avenue, which is where my family had a house from 1942 until the late 60's. I contacted Sandi to figure out how to touch base with you.

   Donnie, I'm so sorry you had "fallen off" my mailing list back when I crashed in May.  I had supposed you were still safely on our rolls!  I'm sorry it took so long, but am glad you have reconnected with us:  (Thanks, Sandi!)

The sight is fantastic, and brings back so many memories, it is almost mind boggling as to how this was all put together. I graduated in 1956, and have attended all my class reunions. The next one should be next fall, which will be our 50th. What saddens me, however, I must admit, is reviewing the Memoriam pages. I knew so many of those now deceased.

I retired from work about 5 years ago, and continue to live in the Portland, Oregon area, where we have resided since 1977.

In reading many of the messages since last summer, a few few things strike me which I would like to follow up on.

Someone wrote that they worked as a copy boy for Andy Bachman, who was the advertising director of Nachman's. I too worked for Andy, also as a copy boy, one summer, when I was about 14 years old. Andy was a great human being, and was instrumental in me getting a DuPont Scholarship to the University of Virginia, from where I graduated in 1960. My father, Aaron Satisky, was the franchisee at Nachman's who managed the restaurant there from the mid 40's until his death in 1954. My Aunt Elsye Satisky worked in the Ladies Department on the second floor for many many years. It seems when I read the e-mails that just about everyone under the sun from those days either worked at Nachman's, had a relative that did, or knew someone who did. I enjoyed reading some time ago the messages from the daughter of Charlie and Rena (Nachman) Kates. I do remember those twins, although they were a bit older than me. I also remember Mrs. Ida Nachman, whose office door on the Mezzanine floor was always open. I believe she died the week before my father.

As regards all the messages about Coach Julie Conn, I can add one:

My father and he were friends from their youth (my dad was born in Newport News in 1907), and I remember that early on the morning of my father's sudden death at home on February 1, '54, Julie visited to see if there was anything he could do to help my mother, sister, and me in our grief. His emotions came through.  

One of the Krause's wrote some time ago and mentioned that he or she was related to Stanley Krause. Stanley and his brother Billy, and sister Marjorie lived with their mother Ethel  at their grandparents' (the Layton's) home on Ash Avenue. We lived next door to the Laytons for many years, and I knew the family quite well. Mrs. Layton, whose first name was Maggie, was one hell of a fine and caring person, and an unusual one at that. Boyd Layton, their grandfather, was the City of Newport News Weights and Measurements Inspector, having been wounded as a Newport News Police detective previously. I know that Billy passed away quite a few years ago, and that Stanley became an architect. I still have a photo of Stanley, myself, and William Earle Layton (Mrs. Layton's son who also lived there) standing in front of the Layton home circa 1946.

I recently saw a couple messages from    Bruce Sims ('56 - of VA). Bruce and I have known one another since 1944, when at the age of 6 we started the first grade together at the Woodrow Wilson grammar school. We get together at the high school reunions and reminisce about the same things every 5 years.

Anyway, keep up the sight.
