Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
It's
strange, isn't it, that just as we were discussing
Our Old
Car Dealerships and
Our Old Cars,
that the very next song in line for our regular
Newsletter from
Dave Spriggs' ('64 - of VA)
Fabulous Reunion CDs
should be The Beach Boys' "409"? Isn't life grand???http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/old-car-dealerships.html http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/our-old-cars.html |
BIRTHDAYS:
We have one Birthday

GUEST BOOK SIGNERS/NEWBIES:
1. Alexander Nicol
('49) of VA - 11/12/05 and 11/13/05:
I plead ignorance. How do I get to post on your site?
Alex, your
"ignorance" would be a result of my own. As I've no idea how to do the
sort of thing which http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/alumni-list.html Welcome aboard! |
From Jean Poole Burton ('64) of RI - 11/11/05 - "You are beautiful...":
| We love you just the way you are
because you are knock dead gorgeous, inside and out...so just love yourself
and be happy!!!
What a wonderful newsletter. My husband is off today and I have totally ignored him and spent over an hour reading the newsletter and writing e-mails...I will have to do penance! Awww, Jean, you're making me blush - but thanks!!! GIGGLES! |
From Doug Nelson ('64) of VA - 11/11/05 - "Birthday of the Marines and Veterans'
Day":
| Dear Carol: I just scanned your last two newsletters: 230th Birthday of the United States Marine Corps, and Veterans' Day. As I recall, Mr. Loving, my geometry teacher in the 11th or 12th grade, was a former marine drill sergeant. As a student of his, I thought this was funny because he was such a pushover in class. Does anyone else remember this? Doug Nelson Class of '64 Dahlgren, VA Hi, Doug! It's good to hear from you! You know, I've seen Mr. Loving three times this year - at last year's reunion, at the Memorial Service for Mr. McIntosh this summer, and again on October 22. I even sat at his table, and I still cannot give you a definitive answer. However, I'm 92.8% sure that he served in the Navy, rather than the Marines. Last year, Thanks, Doug! |
From Mike Leonard ('68) of VA - 11/11/05 - "Melissa Kerlin Mowery":
|
Carol,
The daughter of
Edward (Buster) Kerlin and Linda Estes passed away Wednesday
night. I do not have my yearbooks handy, but Edward graduated from NNHS in
1964. Linda graduated around the time it closed (70-72 ??)
Mike Leonard (68)
Oh, Mikey! You usually bring me such happy news! I first met Buster back in 1959 through the Summer Band program which Mr. Wilson used to conduct in the old band room on the first floor (was that Room 107?). I am so sorry to learn of this tragic news. Our sincerest sympathies are extended to Ed and Linda and their families. Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention, Mike. I'll be posting more on this later. |
From Chandler
Nelms (Hampton HS - '63) of MD - 11/11/05:
|
Dave, Thanks for the awesome USMC website! http://www.marines.com/page/usmc.jsp Chandler Nelms Isn't that just fabulous?!? Thanks, Chandler - and Dave! |
From Jo
Ann Stewart ('64) of TX - 11/11/05 - "Huntington Hall":
|
Hi Carol
The Shipyard does not own Huntington Hall. NNHS was purchased from the City by the Shipyard-then the Shipyard sold it to the Navy for "a dollar". I really enjoyed the pictures and even though NNHS doesn't exist anymore at least having the building being used and taken care of is somehow comforting. Besides it gives a "home" to the Typhoon ghosts that must haunt the hallways - oh what wondrous tales they could tell-just imagine.
Jo Ann Stewart
Thanks, Jo Ann. I haven't checked this by most of the people who took the Magical Mystery Tour, but my sister and I both distinctly recall the Pinkerton guard saying that the shipyard now owned the building. I was quite surprised, as I thought the Navy owned it. I also have the impression that the latest transfer was fairly recent. However, I will admit to being so highly excited at that moment that I may not have been thinking clearly. Does anyone else remember this??? http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/Magical-Mystery-Tour-05.html |
From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 11/11/05 - "NNHS 64/60 BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
ANNOUNCEMENT":
| Carol, The Committee will meet at 9:00 am, Saturday, 12 November, to fold letters and stuff envelopes. The attached documents (word converted to HTML) will go in the mail on Monday 14 November to all NNHS 64 alumni for whom we have a mailing address - about 230 of 299. In addition, you can post them on the NNHS 64/60 BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION web page and announce them in an upcoming newsletter. You never know who is looking at the site ... perhaps a classmate who has not yet provided an address to the Committee. Thanx, D

BOX 6387, NORFOLK VA 23508-0387 nnhs64@cox.net http://nnhs65.00freehost.com/ __________________________________________________________________ To All Our TYPHOON Classmates, There is no gentle way to say this except to simply say it: WE ARE TURNING 60 NEXT YEAR!!! Well, most of us are, anyway. And your Committee thought that we ought to celebrate that milestone event in our lives with each other in some way and at some time in the year 2006. We met and discussed some ideas, but we quickly realized that we needed to capitalize on the enormous creativity of the members of our illustrious Class of 1964. And, so, we are turning to all of you to come up with some ideas for us. On the reverse of this page is a Survey. Please let us know your ideas on what you would like to do, where you would like to do it, and in what month in 2006 you would be most likely to attend. We hope you will return the Survey even if you will be unable to attend the Celebration; we want your ideas. Of course, you may reply by e-mail to nnhs64@cox.net , but please include all information from the Survey, especially your contact information. We would like to receive all Surveys by December 15, 2005, so that we may determine the most popular event, location and time for our celebration. From our tally of the responses we will select the event, date, and place and begin planning. If you would like to join us and work on The Committee, please note that fact on your Survey. Best Wishes from your 60th Birthday Celebration Committee:

sort of get-together! I posted this for you: |
From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 11/12/05:
|
Hi, Carol:
The 11/11/05 newsletter carried a wonderful message from Mr. John Huller ('43) of FL which I'm sure delighted many of your subscribers, and reconnected us with this fine teacher at NNHS. I thought you'd be especially happy to see that, Adonis! He sure has accomplished a lot with three careers, and the last career surely was an exciting one! He certainly made attending NNHS a rewarding experience for us, with his quest for excellence and willingness to teach. I am so glad to learn that he was "blitzed" with emails from the TYPHOON! Now that he has solved the mystery of the Dawn Beauties in the yearbook The Anchor, can you persuade his son Dave to spill the beans on how Mr. Huller was given the nickname "Scooter"? Yes, indeed! My curiosity has certainly been piqued! It would be worth renewing my subscription to read the reply from Dave Huller. Wait a minute, this is really a bargain website...so don't be bashful about asking for financial support for this outstanding site that keeps us in touch with so many friends and those that have meant so much to us at NNHS. TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL
You're a hoot, Joe! I've always and ever had a serious cash-flow problem, especially since I began working non-stop on the site. It did wonders at drying up my other sources of revenue, simply because I had no time to devote to any frivolous activities which might actually generate me any revenue. So what would you have me say, Sweetie? "Hey,
y'all show me the money!"
But that would be (GASP!) tacky!!! Seriously, any contributions are always gratefully received and most appreciated. Thanks again, Adonis! |

Hi, Carol:
This photo will definitely bring a smile to those subscribers of your Newsletter from the NNHS Class of 1957. Here we have two young sailors that I recommend you place in your Famous Sailors pages. Thanks to Allen Turpin and his father,
Bobby Turpin ('58) of VA we have this
outstanding photo of Willie Turpin ('57) of VA on the
left, and John Herman Wiedman ('57) deceased serving
their first tour at sea in the United States Naval Reserve (now known as
the Navy Reserve) aboard an Attack Cargo Vessel.Bobby's message is below, and I want to agree with him that you do a simply outstanding job on the website! Looks like we might have a Famous Airmen from the Class of 1958 in our presence. Now, if Allen will provide us with that all important and necessary photo of Bobby in his Air Force uniform, I am sure we can twist your arm to place Bobby in his rightful place in the Famous Airmen pages. TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

Hi JOE:
I finally received the picture of
John Wiedman and Brother Willie, both of (NNHS - '57).
My son, Allen, scanned it for me and hopefully you will receive
it satisfactorily and remember how they looked and were in 1956.
Willie, told me that picture was taken on a "AKA" ship which Willie said
it was an attack cargo vessel during summer duty with the Naval
reserve. They were sitting on the deck gunbarrel. Willie said shortly
after that picture was taken he got off the gun however John stayed on
it and the deck chief came by and chewed John out and gave him extra
duty scrubbing the deck.
JOE, I hope you are well and I really
enjoy what you write to
Carol on the
1965 NNHS web-site. Your recollection of
the way things were is simply outstanding. Would you please send this
to Carol to enter it on the famous military section that has been
compiled. She does a wonderful service to NNHS that can never be
duplicated. I was in the USAF from 5/11/59 thru 5/10/63. Hope to hear from you soon.
Regards,
Bobby Turpin (NNHS'58)

| Hi
Carol,
If you have time, Open this up. Red Skelton recites the Pledge of Allegiance, Under God. Herbie
THE BEST I EVER HEARD AND OUR
NATION WAS BUILT UNDER GOD..........................
pass this along
I think each AMERICAN should watch this at
least once a week !!!
I can remember when I was young watching
Red Skeleton do this on TV .. and now here it is available world wide
. Truly awesome !!!
Pledge Of Allegiance To The Flag Of The United States Of America Thank you so much, Herbie! (I had to open a separate window for this so that I wasn't hearing both sound tracks simultaneously. Your computer may behave differently; that's a bit outside my ken.) I remember watching this on TV with my family when I was a young girl. What a treat! As I listened again, tears began streaming down my face, probably from not only the moving content, but for the mixed memories of a precious time. (Herb celebrated his 81st birthday on October 22 while we celebrated at the Reunion.) Thanks again, Herbie! You are my hero! |
From Donnie Satisky ('56) of OR - 11/13/05:
| Carol, I learned of the NNHS Web site last summer from my sister
Franki Satisky ('68 - of VA), who communicates with
Sandi (Bateman) Chestnut ('65 - of VA). Sandi was a neighbor on Ash
Avenue, which is where my family had a house from 1942 until the late 60's.
I contacted Sandi to figure out how to touch base with you.Donnie, I'm so sorry you had "fallen off" my mailing list back when I crashed in May. I had supposed you were still safely on our rolls! I'm sorry it took so long, but am glad you have reconnected with us: (Thanks, Sandi!) http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/alumni-list.html The sight is fantastic, and brings back so many memories, it is almost mind boggling as to how this was all put together. I graduated in 1956, and have attended all my class reunions. The next one should be next fall, which will be our 50th. What saddens me, however, I must admit, is reviewing the Memoriam pages. I knew so many of those now deceased. I retired from work about 5 years ago, and continue to live in the Portland, Oregon area, where we have resided since 1977. In reading many of the messages since last summer, a few few things strike me which I would like to follow up on. Someone wrote that they worked as a copy boy for Andy Bachman, who was the advertising director of Nachman's. I too worked for Andy, also as a copy boy, one summer, when I was about 14 years old. Andy was a great human being, and was instrumental in me getting a DuPont Scholarship to the University of Virginia, from where I graduated in 1960. My father, Aaron Satisky, was the franchisee at Nachman's who managed the restaurant there from the mid 40's until his death in 1954. My Aunt Elsye Satisky worked in the Ladies Department on the second floor for many many years. It seems when I read the e-mails that just about everyone under the sun from those days either worked at Nachman's, had a relative that did, or knew someone who did. I enjoyed reading some time ago the messages from the daughter of Charlie and Rena (Nachman) Kates. I do remember those twins, although they were a bit older than me. I also remember Mrs. Ida Nachman, whose office door on the Mezzanine floor was always open. I believe she died the week before my father. As regards all the messages about Coach Julie Conn, I can add one: My father and he were friends from their youth (my dad was born in Newport News in 1907), and I remember that early on the morning of my father's sudden death at home on February 1, '54, Julie visited to see if there was anything he could do to help my mother, sister, and me in our grief. His emotions came through. One of the Krause's wrote some time ago and mentioned that he or she was related to Stanley Krause. Stanley and his brother Billy, and sister Marjorie lived with their mother Ethel at their grandparents' (the Layton's) home on Ash Avenue. We lived next door to the Laytons for many years, and I knew the family quite well. Mrs. Layton, whose first name was Maggie, was one hell of a fine and caring person, and an unusual one at that. Boyd Layton, their grandfather, was the City of Newport News Weights and Measurements Inspector, having been wounded as a Newport News Police detective previously. I know that Billy passed away quite a few years ago, and that Stanley became an architect. I still have a photo of Stanley, myself, and William Earle Layton (Mrs. Layton's son who also lived there) standing in front of the Layton home circa 1946. I recently saw a couple messages from
Anyway, keep up the sight. Best regards, Don (Donnie) Satisky Thanks so much, Don! I haven't yet cross-referenced any of your notes, but I will gladly do so very soon! Thank you for sharing all of that with us! |

most fun I enjoyed our senior year centered around working on that

I was really excited to see this shot. I designed and painted the "B.
L. Zebub" logo attached to B. L.'s desk. Following the production, it
hung above my bed at home for several years. It's long gone now, of
course. If you're able to reclaim any more of these shots, Chip, I'd certainly love to see and post them! I might even be a bit speedier next time! Thanks again, Chippy-Love. You
are my hero,.

From Fred
Eubank ('64) of TX - 11/04/05 - "Briarfield ES":
| Carol, I would like to submit the attached JPEG images (one small and one large of each) to be added to the Briarfield Elementary School page. All the images (except the one with me standing in front of the school) are from the "School Memories" miniature photo albums (produced by Delmar Studios) that students received every year. Two years are covered, 1955-56 and 1956-57. I was in the fourth and fifth grades respectively. One shows my 5th grade teacher, Ms. Edwards. The "My Favorite Classmates" page shows Mike Barnes ('64) and Clarence (Clyde) Point ('64). On the page with 6 photos, I know who they are except the top row, left and middle. If you can't recognize them, I will send you the names. The three females should be fairly easy to ID, and one was very well known. I don't know if you'll want to, or even be able to, post the names on the web site due to privacy concerns. But I'm sure none of these individuals look anything like their images of 50 years ago. I have a few more of these, so let me know if you want them. Thanks. Frederick Craig Eubank NNHS Class of 64 San Antonio, TX OOOPS - STILL NOT DONE...... Thank you, Fred! |
