Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

  That most American of all holidays, Thanksgiving, is upon us.  Here's something I borrowed from my personal page which I wrote
while in a bit of a silly mood (who - ME?):

Contrary to the propaganda constantly put out by Yankees (who seem to share grabbing top honors to themselves with Texans
and the Russians!), the first Thanksgiving was held at Berkeley Plantation along the James River in Virginia on December 4, 1619.
Those Johnny-Come-Lately, "Let's Claim Every Honor for Ourselves", Blithering Yankees didn't even ARRIVE
on America's shores until November 9, 1620!

  Thanks so much, Frances!  I don't know if things got better, or if my attitude and outlook just improved, but I'm feeling "500% mo'
better" as my cousin used to say.  (Yes, I realize that's both impossible and ungrammatical - but it's fun to say!)

   I've no idea who is responsible for the desecration of downtown Newport News, and as I'm powerless to do anything about it,
perhaps it's better that way.  I simply do not understand what the motivation could have been.  It has become so relentlessly ugly,
where once it was so beautiful.

   Wait a minute.  Remember that Spokesman Club beach party - or Christopher Newport Society beach party - or whatever it
was?  The one that you and Frank and Sunny Chapin and lots of other people and I all attended that was soooo much fun?  The
time when Sunny wore a (GASP!!!) two-piece bathing suit?  Remember?  Is that where that was?  That wonderful party was
on a beach which no longer exists???  Is that what we're saying here?  ARGHHH!!!

   There's a lot to be said for quietude, Frances.  It's often a very rare commodity.  I pray your Thanksgiving will be as delightful
as you are.

   Well, hi, Precious, how are you?!?  Hmmm, your comment is causing me to have to think, and you know how opposed I am
to thinking, but as you are so, well, precious, I will make an exception.  Let's see now.  Some things were, are, and ever more
shall be.  You were always precious and remain so still.  David was always adorable, and has become (if possible) even more
so.  Michaels's blue eyes are as brilliantly blue as ever they were.  But some things are subject to change, are they not?  Is it not
reasonable to assume that with wisdom and maturity, Wayne has become such a Honey and a Sweetie Pie, that to deny it would
be futile?  Granted, he will still be Mr. Wonderful and Mr. Basketball, but must he be limited to only one nickname?  Might we
not in all honesty be justified in referring to him as "Wonderful Wayne Honey" or "Mr. Sweetie Pie Basketball"?  Yea, verily, I do
believe so!

   I thought you might enjoy reading this article which appeared in the Tampa Tribune this week:

The Saint Leo University Basketball team is so much improved this year.  I am optimistic that they will have a good season in 2004-2005. Michael has worked very hard to build the team within his long range program.  Saint Leo University received headlines this week also for improving their student-thlte graduation rate, which is probably one of the greatest accomplishments Mike has achieved since becoming the head coach. "Saint Leo Improve Student-Athlete Graduation Rate to 79 Percent, 2nd Best in SSC" - Pasco News, Volume 100 Issue 47, November 18, 2004.

Although the little sister of a 1966 NNHS graduate,  I have greatly enjoyed your web page and all the stories.  My only
and older brother, Steve (Kiger), & I grew up on Garden Drive.  And later 16th…

Joel Lewis's ('64 of VA) mom called me her Gentile daughter.  She made the best chicken soup with matzo balls and
for years I thought it was called 'Minnie's Soup'.  To this day, I stay in touch with Joel. 

Stuart Gardens was the best place to have adventures - I recall the tractor man and how we delighted making imaginary
boundaries out of his clippings; memories of Mulberry Hill; Rip Collins' ('65 - of TN) parents always had the best treats
at Halloween; walking to the grocery store past Wickham and anyone recall Minnie's Dime Store? 

The tragic shooting of Jerry Powell's ('64) father was my earliest memory of tragedy in that area.  Memories of the beach
that one could walk all the way to Christopher Shores neighborhood.  I also recall thinking Steve Korn (?) - class of '61?
was very handsome, and as a 6 yr old, knocking on his door to ask if he wanted to come out and play…

Also, remember JM Fields? I recall Steve getting his first stereo there & 'Meet the Beatles' album.  And memories of the
Paramount Theatre - also my brother's first job.  Riding the bus to the shoe store where Joel Lewis's mom and aunt owned,
was a treat.  Growing up in Calvary Baptist - I even remember the very afternoon we heard that Sarah (Puckett's)
(Kressaty - '65 of VA) dad had suddenly passed away.  In the mid 50's - 70's, that was one popular church - Rev. Samuel
Tatem was the best! 

I also recall Steve having to take me with him, if he wanted the car to go get ice cream that Sunday afternoon…so off we go
to pick up Mary Ann Barrow and I have to sit in the back seat with her brother George!  (Whom I just heard passed).  Those
were the days you drove all the way to Wythe to High's Ice Cream Store. 

I enjoyed all of Steve's friends so much - especially the basketball games! Burch/Fisher/Owens!!   Memories of David
Ellenson's ('65 of NY) younger brother (Jimmy - '?) & me with signs against the opposing team as we boldly strutted back
and forth on their side of the gym!  Memories of me and neighbor Beth Wingrove trying our best to fix Barbara Huston up
with other neighbor, Jerry Fisher...  We wrote a fake love letter and left it on his door and hid.  And lastly,  I took one
of Steve's first NNHS yearbooks, and he nearly killed me when I wrote a full page.

   Might that have been the drop dead gorgeous Steve Corum ('62) you remember?  I imagine there were quite a few little girls -
of all ages - who would have liked him to come out and play with them............

The picture I recently sent of the Amoco station on West Avenue was owned by Al Monfalcone who owned the old Sports Palace and
Monty's Penquin. The old gas station was known as Monfalcone's Amoco. Happy Thanksgiving!

   I like your approach to the Thanksgiving dinner!  It seems this year I'll be cooking and baking again myself.  Where did I go wrong
in life?!?  Wild Giggles!!!

   Thank you so much for your kind words, Linda.  One of the greatest blessing in life is to feel that you're making a contribution
to the happiness of others.  If I'm able to do that while having fun myself, then I'm doubly blessed.

   As I mentioned to Joe Madagan ('57) of FL yesterday, I believe I have at last extricated myself from the enveloping gloom,
largely through those kind notes I received from my friends. I don’t believe I’ve ever had such a wide circle of wonderful friends
before in my life! What a great blessing that is!  My association with y'all is one of the things for which I am most thankful..

   I’m not even sure what was wrong with me, and that’s just as well. If I can’t remember, it must not have been all that bad after
all, right? I’m going to start decorating earlier than usual this year, and that always chases sad and bad feelings far away. And I
think I will go ahead and cook a mini-feast. We’re rather fond of leftovers anyway!

    Y'all have a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving - and take care of each other!

    And thank y'all for taking care of me while I was down!   You're the best!
