11/27/05 - NNHS Newsletter - O Come, O Come, Emmanuel |
Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
| Today is the first Sunday in Advent, which officially opens the Christmas season according to the recognized church calendar. St. Nicholas Day (December 6) is the opening date observed elsewhere. in the world, as it was in Colonial Virginia. We'll celebrate that, too. We're still celebrating everything together because we're family. |
NEWBIES:
1.
Patricia Gabriel Hedrick Grzybowski ('61) of VA - 11/25/05:

Please add me to list
Patricia (Gabriel) Hedrick Grzybowski
Also,
does anyone know where Wayne Gray is or anything about him? We were
friends in Marshall Courts.
Hi, Patricia!
Welcome to our group; we're
happy to have you with us! I've added you to our mailing list as well as
our now misnamed Alumni Page:
I asked a representative panel of experts for help in finding Wayne:
Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA ran him through Classmates.com for us, and found this:
CLASSMATES has a "Wayne Gray" who attended
Warwick HS 1957-1962.
Thanks again for your interest. We look forward to hearing more from you.

From Steve Veazey ('60) of VA - 11/26/05:

Carol, I recognize the name, of course..... Wayne Gray was in ’57-58 or thereabouts. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for years. Steve V. AHA!!! I found Wayne's junior portrait in the 1957 Anchor! Thanks so much, Steve! NOW - does anyone have an update on Wayne for Patricia?? |
From Tom Norris (Hampton HS - '73) of VA - 11/25/05:
From Jerry Blanchard ('62)
of VA - 11/25/05 - "Sailor I am":
From Jimmy Hines ('64) of Northern VA - 11/26/05:
| Good day after Black Friday to you,
Carol .........YEP - Boldness is probably a good trait to exercise running a show like this - shyness really doesn't cut it........ But, I am sure you have thought of that/done that all before as this wonderfully consuming thing has evolved - ever see Little Shop of Horrors? GIGGLES!!! Well, I go to B'more today and tomorrow to play at a church's Christkindlmart, and just heard on the radio that thieves are stealing the streetlight poles there -130 of them so far-for the aluminum, it is thought... my car's wheels are aluminum alloy... oh, well, we'll see. There are times this area's disadvantages outweigh the advantages. YOWZERS!!! Glad your Thanksgiving was nice - so was mine. Take care, Jimmy Thanks, Sweetie! I hope you had a great trip! |
From Fred Mays ('60) of VA - 11/26/05:
|
.......Take care Carol...you are everyone's hero.....Hope you had a
wonderful Thanksgiving.
Well, Sweetie, I don't know how
big a hero I am; I'm usually trying to outrun the posse for all my
mistakes and omissions. But I did have a Super-Duper Thanksgiving,
thanks!
Take care,
Fred Mays, Class of 1960
P.S. My
last day on the job at Northrop Grumman (Newport
News Shipbuilding) will be Wed., November 30. I retire with 40
years, 3 months and one week of continuous service. I will send you my
new email address as soon as I get that new computer which I plan to get
as soon as I retire. Carol, you are the BEST!
WOWZERS!!! Congratulations, Fred! That is mighty impressive! |
From Barbara Brewer ('69) of VA - 11/26/05 - "North End Gang":
|
Hello Carol,
I have enjoyed the spoon bread and thank you
for the recipe.
I'm glad you liked it. I think I'm the only one in my whole family who does! GIGGLES!!! I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving. I
enjoy the extra time to visit with old friends and making friends.
I recently returned from Greece. A group of
about 27 friends from Norfolk made the trip together. We had to run from
customs in New York to catch the puddle jumper to Norfolk. There was a
woman behind me and she looked Greek. I asked her if she was going to
Norfolk. She said she was going to Williamsburg with a heavy Greek
accent. I asked her if she was moving to Williamsburg. She replied that
she originally had lived in Newport News. I went through all the Greek
surnames that I could remember. She is Frank Vretos' aunt,
Helen Kanelos, (came to VA in 1946). She married George Kanelos,
who came to VA in 1928.
Frank Kanelos ('70), passed away on March 27, 2005: http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/03-30-05-NNHS-Frank-Kanelos.html
George Balanis ('60) lives in Williamsburg and Helen sees his
sister,
Priscilla ('58), frequently. Priscilla was always called Voula, which
I have learned is an endearment. There are many Greek young ladies by
that name.
Frank Vretos ('69), is living in Northern Virginia. His aunt
and I had a very pleasant time on the flight to Norfolk.I saw George this summer at the Reunion of the Great NNHS Class of 1960: http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/reunion-page.html

Sofas Takis ('69), works for the City of Newport News and I used to
see him when I purchased my city decals. He was the brother of Flossie
Takis.
George Coussoulas, ('58), was also a neighbor. Helen did not
recognize the name. My brother,
Bill Brewer ('57), was a close friend with George and both of them
taught school in Northern Virginia. My brother is now a gentleman farmer
in N.C. Irving Chilcoate was also a part of the
North End gang. The boys frequented
North End Pharmacy. Whenever I saw Irv, the pharmacist, he always asked
about "The Gang". My brother and his friends played basketball together
on weekends while they were living in Northern Virginia. They still keep
in touch.
My brother was in the USAF during the Viet Nam
era. We lost touch during a rather nasty attack on his air base, Bien Hoa.
It took about two weeks for the mail to resume. I was relieved that he
was OK. I took him home from the train station when he arrived home. It
was the first time he had ridden in a car with me driving. I think that
scared him more that anything in VN. I also brought
Charlie Vellines ('65), USArmy, home from
the air port when he returned from VN. Neither of the boys wanted
anything but a quiet homecoming and I waited for them in the car. I hope
that our current troops have happy homecomings.Amen!
I wish I had taken notes when I was talking
with Helen. I have not emailed Frank since I returned home. This is the
weekend that you have extra time to visit with old friends. I have
enjoyed reading the messages from the classmates. North End has really
changed and I did not recognize my own house while taking a friend on an
evening drive through Old Newport News. I have enjoyed the postings of
the photos and I enjoy looking through the yearbooks. The ads had most of
the photos of the city. We were very lucky to have gone to Newport News
High. I remember eating at The Dog House
restaurant as well as Woolworth's and
Antine’s.
I enjoyed shopping
downtown.
I miss the old downtown area. It looked like a ghost town complete with a
tumbleweed rolling down the street, the last time I walked near
La Vogue.
YOWZERS!!!
I look forward to hearing from the alumni.
Barbara
Thanks, Barbara! It was good to hear from you! |
From Sharron Wanderer Dawes ('61) of VA - 11/26/05 - "
Joe Madagan's
'Housework'":
| Dear Carol, Thanks to you for keeping us all in touch. I know it's a lot of work.
BOY, HOWDY!!! WILD
GIGGLES!!! Oh, yes, ma'am, I will add my "Amen!" to that!!! Thanks, Sharron! |
| As some of you noticed, the host site was down for several hours today. As a result, I was not able to issue this Newsletter when I had intended. Accordingly, I was forced to excise some exciting new material which was still in process. Stay tuned for tomorrow's installment. I promise it will be a good one! |
Y'all take care of each other! TYPHOONS FOREVER!
Love to all, Carol

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
Words:
Combined from various antiphons by an unknown author, possibly in the 12th
Century
(Veni, veni Emanuel); translated from
Latin to English by
John M. Neale,
Mediaeval Hymns, 1851. Neale’s original translation began, “Draw nigh,
draw nigh, Emmanuel"
Music:
“Veni Emmanuel,” from a 15th Century processional of French Franciscan nuns
(the setting for the funeral hymn Libera me)
O come, O
come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
O come, Thou Wisdom from on high,
Who orderest all things mightily;
To us the path of knowledge show,
And teach us in her ways to go.
O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan’s tyranny;
From depths of hell Thy people save,
And give them victory over the grave.
O come, Thou Day-spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death’s dark shadows put to flight.
O come, Thou Key of David, come,
And open wide our heavenly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery.
O come, O come, great Lord of might,
Who to Thy tribes on Sinai’s height
In ancient times once gave the law
In cloud and majesty and awe.
O come, Thou Root of Jesse’s tree,
An ensign of Thy people be;
Before Thee rulers silent fall;
All peoples on Thy mercy call.
O come, Desire of nations, bind
In one the hearts of all mankind;
Bid Thou our sad divisions cease,
And be Thyself our King of Peace.
Rejoice!
Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.
