Carol,
I don't know if you ever read the sports page of the Daily Press, so thought you might like to see this article about 
Jimmy Hogan, Class of 67. I'm sure there are former
players from our class and others that played with Jimmy during their high
school careers. I think it's been mentioned before that Jimmy still holds
some records and this article confirms it. Yet another reason for us
Typhoons to be proud. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and your family and all our classmates.

Merry Christmas to you and all *Typhoon and their families (**Crabbers too). Jimmy Walker ’62 *Back in the day I was told, I suspect in error, that there‘s no plural (s) for Typhoon…somebody help me! **I know I need to get over it, but I can’t yet…maybe in the next 43 years. Oh, certainly, I remember, Wayne Honey. I just wanted you to say it all over again! And bless your heart, you didn't let me down! Your answer appeared within moments of the question, as I knew it would. Thanks so much! Now as to the "Crabbers", they can call themselves whatever they want and I don't know why?
However, and I don't know why on this
one either, but I do know it to be true, WE (sports teams) were referred
to as the NNHS "Typhoon", not "Typhoons". As an athlete I remember this
well. As someone has previously stated, our logo is that of a tornado, not
a typhoon, which of course is a hurricane in our parts!
Seriously, our sports teams were always
identified as the "Newport News High Typhoon". If you have or can get your
hands on them, read the sports pages of our time and you will see that
term always used in what appears to be the singular. But, it isn't; in
that context it is inclusive of the entire team, all members. Our sports
teams were not a number of "little storms" running hither and yond, but
ONE BIG STORM ALL TOGETHER! Thus, the NNHS TYPHOON! When the article
referred to an individual of the "Typhoon" team, it was always< ...the
Typhoon's so and so did such and such...>an apostrophe and "s" after the
"n" identified an individual. I would not be surprised to hear that
Coach Conn had something to do
with the concept of naming our teams as ONE UNIT, that is to mean a team,
not a group of individuals.
As a side note, "the
Duke University of the West",
Stanford University is known as
the "Cardinal",
not "Cardinals"!
Now, as students of NNHS, as a number
of individuals, we would then be Typhoons, the plural, or if so chosen:
"TYPHOON FOREVER". The school was not a sports team, nor were athletes non
students!
I stand ready to defend my position,
with evidence!!

Thank you, thank, you, thank you!!! I also remember having this conversation over the phone with you. I asked you whether I should close these newsletters with "TYPHOONS FOREVER!" (as I do) or "TYPHOON FOREVER!". You said that would depend on what I meant. (And whoever knows what that could be?!?) After much soul-searching, I decided to stay with "TYPHOONS FOREVER!" There was ample justification for using either. I'm sure there was some perfectly plausible reason why I chose this one. I just don't especially remember what it was. I probably flipped a coin.... Sigh.

"This hymn’s history is the source
of some disagreement. The traditional story is that Mohr and Gruber
wrote it in Oberndorf, Austria, on Christmas Eve when they discovered the
church organ was broken
(different versions say it rusted out, or mice chewed through vital parts).
However, recent evidence
indicates this may be only folklore. An old manuscript has reportedly been
discovered that shows
Franz Gruber wrote the score 2-4 years after Mohr wrote the lyrics. Whatever the
truth, this carol
has been a Christmas favorite for almost 200 years."
