The following obituary is in the Daily Press, regarding Margaret Cowan Blayton’s ('57) mother. Our sympathy goes out to both Margaret and
Newell (Bubba) Blayton.

Hazel S. Cowan

HOPEWELL - Hazel Sexton Cowan, 85, of 4105 Old Iron Court, formerly of Hampton, Va., died Dec. 27, 2004, at Southside
Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, Va. She was a native of Hertford County, N.C., a homemaker, and a member of Winton
United Methodist Church, Winton, N.C., and was the widow of Hartwell Eason Cowan. Surviving are one daughter, Margaret C.
Blayton of Canton, Ga.; one son, Joe S. Cowan of Disputanta, Va.; one sister, Mildred Stallings of Louisburg, N.C.; one brother,
Wallace Sexton of Winton, N.C.; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m.
Wednesday, Dec. 29, at Ahoskie Cemetery, Ahoskie, N.C., with the Rev. Robert May officiating. The family will assemble
at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Wednesday prior to service. Garrett Funeral Home Ahoskie, N.C., is serving the Cowan Family.
Published in the Daily Press on 12/29/2004.

WOWZERONI!!! Sweetie, this whole site exists for moments and treasures such as this! I had no idea
any such things could possibly have survived! I attended all seven of these functions. The two which stand out most clearly
in my mind are Swing Your Partner (who could ever forget dances featuring Howie and His Blazers?!?) and Fun Night. Unlike
the other six (which are obviously dances), Fun Night was a fund raising carnival. I remember it so clearly. As freshmen, Rose
Woodard and I hadn't been able to wrangle any dates (sad, isn't it?!? GIGGLES!), so we went together. It was very exciting!
Somewhere near the center of the cafeteria was a (gasp!) Kissing Booth! Who would have imagined it would have been allowed?!?
Sometime near the start, someone (was it you, Steve?) began calling out, "Have you seen Graham yet? Graham Avery's here!"
For the benefit of those of you who might not recall, Graham Avery was a gorgeous tall, blond-haired, blue-eyed boy we had
known at Magruder. He had moved out of the school system somewhere, I'm relatively certain to Hampton, with his father. Well,
I'll tell you, I was all a-twitter! Imagine seeing Graham Avery again! But guess what? I was such a nebbish, he didn't remember
me, and looked at me as though I was from outer space or something. Sigh. I was crushed. (And yes, Jimmy-Jimmy, of course
I remember what I was wearing - my peacock blue blouse and my wonderful peacock blue plaid kilt. It obviously didn't help.)

Albert, once again you are my hero. I had so wanted to know the exact dates for some of these events for my compulsively dated
high school albums, and here you've delivered them unto me. Thank you sooo much! And thanks for the memories! For the
moment, I've given them their own page on Odds and Ends:

If, like me, you have been looking for a way to help the victims of the terrible Tsunami that just devastated
Southeast Asia, this is a way that is well organized and effective. The Episcopal Relief Fund is well run, gets
the job done quickly and efficiently, and has very low administrative cost. Although it is an arm of the
Episcopal Church, it does not involve preaching in its mission. It will put the resources where they can do t
he most good.

I hope you have already found a way to help, but if not, this is a good one.

And may your New Year be a good one.

I don't know if he or anyone else knew but when I was in grade school at Walter Reed, I had the biggest crush
on Jackie Smith. Does anyone know what happened to him? He doesn't show up as a junior with us in the
1961 Anchor or as a senior in the 1962 Anchor. Just wondering.....I always wonder about people who suddenly
disappear from my life.

What a treat to get home and read all of your wonderful newsletters that I had missed since leaving for Virginia last
Wednesday. We had a wonderful Christmas with our relatives (son Chuck drove up from Pensacola and daughter Becky
came down on the train on Christmas Eve), and my mother, who was supposed to have "a couple of months to live" last
February, is doing marvelously well and not going anywhere except maybe to the mall...we are so thankful. We got to see
two new babies in the family that we had not seen before, as well as numerous other children all growing too fast!

What a hoot to get a foot of snow on the 26th! Everyone was accusing us of "bringing it in from New England..."
Fortunately for us our Burton get-togethers were on Christmas Eve and Christmas afternoon and so we had done that so
we hunkered down with a jigsaw puzzle, something everyone could work on...ended up staying up until one a.m. to finish it!
Did lots of eating and a wee bit of drinking... We returned to RI tonight and found our own snow melting (39 degrees tonight).

It is a wonderful web site and newsletter...don't change a thing!

His birthday is April 13, 1928 and mine June 7, 1928. Last year a couple of e-mails passed between us
commenting on reaching 75. Following is something I sent the day before I crossed over.

SLOW AND STEADY WIN DE RACE

Yes, tomorrow I’ll turn 75. Never thought much about it before, but here I am and a lot us sure ain’t!

I remember 1943 gym class and grinding around the track behind NNHS with you and a bunch of friends. We
found that by going slow and steady we could carry on conversations. Also that by carefully pacing ourselves
at just the right speed, we could sneak by with only 4 laps instead of the required 5 (1/5 mile track). Someone
ratted on us to Coach Julie Conn and he secreted himself in the grandstands to confirm. As we rounded lap
no. 4, expecting it to be the final, Julie stormed out of the stands and gave us one of his red-faced screaming
lectures. His main theme was that none of us would ever see fifty. During all this, the jocks were sailing past,
happy to do extra laps at high speed, and smirking at the apprehended - now doomed to die young.

So here we are – still alive 25 years past our pronounced finality. And the HS jocks? Most of them are already
standing quietly around in front of Heaven's version of the Palace Theater. They are all wearing their ratty old
“N” sweaters, and wondering what went wrong.

In his later years my grandfather used to say to his friends on parting, "May you live long and die happy."

I hope that you do too.

Thanks for the Julie Conn story. He was quite a colorful coach at NNHS. I managed the basket ball team while
I was in NNHS and can still hear him yelling "MOOOOOOVVVEEEE THE BALL!!!!!! Pantiotius" (a Greek player).

Another player, Elmo Stephenson had quit high school in his junior year and joined the navy. He came back
to high school to get his degree after being in the navy about four years where he played basket ball on the
Atlantic Fleet varsity team. Coach Conn talked him into playing high school basketball during his senior year.
I remember having to put a "patch" over his navy tattoo so that the fans and visiting team members wouldn't
notice his age and Newport News parents wouldn't think that this "evil tattooed man" might unduly influence
their children.

Everyone has a Julie Conn story.

Carol (Buckwheat???): Mea Culpa! Mea Culpa!! I have been lax in reading my email!! (Got a wild hair and have been
baking and trying to finish this cross stitch project!!)

Yeah, talk about small world, AND when I saw Bobby (Turpin - '58) just a while ago, we had a discussion about this!
I didn't realize he was married to Anne (Sawyer - '65)! WOW! AND my neighbor across the street, Doug Bacon,
told me his mom went to NNHS and graduated in 1939!!! SO DID MY DAD!!! He's gonna ask his mom if she has her
yearbook, as my dad didn't have one!! Amazing, isn't it! I'm still giggling!

I would like to add my thanks to you as well. This little web site you started 5 yrs ago?? for our class has blossomed
into this amazing place to go to see all kinds of pics, etc. I can't tell you how many memories it has given me back!!

I was poking around in one of those web search engines and suddenly came across myself. Deja-vu!!

This apparently resulted from a letter that I had written to a Daily Press reporter following his article
about possibly converting the empty Walter Reed building into an art museum. I never got a response
from the reporter so I don't know if the letter was ever printed in the paper. Anyway, it somehow ended
up on the internet.

In a lifetime, everyone gets 5 minutes of fame. Hope this was not my one shot.

Use in any way if you wish. There is one typo that crept in: The boy's side was on 25th Street. The girl's
side was on 24th.

of VA emailed me that story when it appeared in the Daily Press - yes, it was printed - and I added the photo I had snapped

Hello again, Thu., Dec. 30, 04

On Sunday, Nov. 7, the Orange Co. Register had a big spread about the upcoming opening of U.S.S. Midway,
which is now retired and in San Diego being made into a floating museum.

I was disappointed that no mention was made of where she was built, so I started a letter to the Editor. Then
I realized there was more to my story, so I let it all come out. The result is stitched on below.

The story was published in the next Sunday edition, Nov. 15. The text was edited down to fit the space, but
the main story was retained.

Did I tell you I was a sailor? Don't remember doing that, but at age 76 the RAM plays tricks sometimes.

Anyway, I'll attach a photo of me taken in Dec. 1945, a few days after my enlistment in the Navy.

Dear Editor,

The USS Midway article was of special interest to me. In a very small way I helped build her at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co., Newport News, Virginia (my home town).

In June 1944 I completed my sophomore year of high school and also turned 16. While searching for summer
employment I learned that the shipyard would take anyone 16 or over. I was soon hired as a machinist helper.
My only task that summer was to drill holes in an endless supply of steel bars. I was told that the bars would be
welded to the deck of the Midway as anchor points for hundreds of equipment cabinets.

The keel for Midway had been laid in Oct. 1943 and by that following summer, parts for construction were
in great demand. We routinely worked 6 days a week. In Sept. I left the job to begin my senior year of high school.

Midway was launched on March 20, 1945 and was then brought to a shipyard pier for completion. In June I
graduated from high school and returned once again to the shipyard, this time becoming an electrician's helper.
I didn't work on Midway, but my friends and I did get to tour her at lunchtime. We were fascinated at the size -
the flight deck was 900 feet - three football fields long!.

During that summer I ran into a former work mate from the machine shop. He had taken over my drill press and
was still drilling those steel bars. He said they would be used for Coral Sea, sister ship of Midway, and now under construction.

In September 1945 the war was suddenly over. Midway was commissioned a week later and soon left Newport News.
Things slowed down in the shipyard and I was finally swept out in the massive layoffs. Later in the year I joined
the Navy and eventually went to sea aboard a destroyer. I hoped my path would cross again with Midway, but it
was not to be.

Now at age 76 I plan to visit my old friend once again. I'll be looking around for those steel bars.

Happy New Year, Carol and to all Typhoons who see this. I was just catching up a little (don't know if I ever will completely)
with the newsletters and ran into the wonderful world of the NN city rec and pool. Many days of wonderful memories just
exploded within me. In the summer, we spent just about every afternoon in that pool. I also took the swimming lessons. I
was also there the day my darling cousin (Cookie Phillips Tyndall - '64 of VA) tried to drown. It scared me half to death.
One minute she was standing there and then, all of a sudden, there was a crowd and she was lying on the side of the pool.
We later could kid her about it. What a way to get the life guard's attention. We also spent many afternoons after school
(Walter Reed) and on Saturdays involved in sports and crafts. On Friday nights, we danced. I thought Ronnie Phillips
(Peanut) ('65) was the best dancer ever. He still does that well. Softball and basketball kept (my sister) Brenda ('67) and
me pretty busy in those days. What a life we have had.
God Blessed us -- everyone!

Hi Carol! So good to read the news letters and catch up.

I left Newport News for Great Lakes, Illinois December 16, because my daughter was having surgery. I had to take care
of her and the two grandchildren, ages 4 and 22 months, until my husband and son arrived December 23rd. My trip out
via US Airways was uneventful but they were caught in the baggage handler's sickout. They were lucky though because
the next day my husband insisted on being taken back to the airport instead of waiting for it to be delivered, as they had
promised. He went through over 100 bags before finding his. No one was there to deliver them so who knows when he
would have gotten the luggage had he not gone out to the airport.

My son and I left December 29 to return home and had the same problem. Missed the connecting flight in Philadelphia as
he and our son did coming out, so the baggage did not arrive with us last night. We had to go back out this morning to Patrick
Henry to find it. When I go back Jan. 7th to relieve my husband for the last week that she will need help, I am taking a
NONSTOP from Norfolk to Chicago. I don't like going out of Norfolk but you cannot get a nonstop flight from Patrick Henry
to anywhere.

This trip was unique in that I had never experienced "0" degree weather. That was what registered on Friday, December
24 on our way to Wisconsin for my daughter's checkup. The wind chill was minus 25. As we were getting on to one of the
many toll roads they have, the power window didn't want to open for me to throw the quarter into the basket. I got it down
far enough to toss the quarter, but then it wouldn't go back up! We had the window down and the heat going full blast in the
van until finally, the window motor must have warmed a bit and it closed but ever so slowly. Now that is cold! I was pumping
gas into the van later, without gloves, when I realized that my fingers were burning. You could get frost bitten very easily
and not even know it.

We had a few flurries on Christmas Day but Virginia got up to 15 inches of snow and I missed it! Great Lakes had a real beach
day the day I left - 44 degrees! I am looking forward to the 64 degrees we are promised here in Poquoson tomorrow. I dread
going back out there but she isn't supposed to lift the little one for 4 weeks (hernia surgery) so I will just have to suffer leaving
my job again to play with the grandsons. Now we all know that is a choice I will make very easily!

Keep up the good work Carol - as most of us on your list are children of the 60's - anything goes, especially freedom of speech
and freedom of the press. Happy New Year to everyone- and you too, Tommy Flax ('64) , Judy Bell ('64), David Workman
('64) (your dog killed my chicken and I haven't forgiven you for it), David Rosenwasser ('64) ( I loved those jelly donuts), and all
the others in my kindergarten class. I too won a dance contest in the eighth grade with Jimmy Crank ('63). Bobby Bloxom ('64)
was my first crush and Jane Coltrain ('64) was my best friend (Bobby liked her better - especially when she fell out of a tree and
broke her arm-at least I think it was Jane.) Well I could go on and on. My mother, Carol Stewart, worked at Nachman's in the
sportswear department for years along with Donna Chadwell's Mother Pie - and I worked there a couple of Christmas breaks
when I was in college and I also took piano lessons from one of the Nachman's. What a wonderful family!
