“He who thinks and thinks for himself, will always have a claim to thanks; it is no matter whether it be right or wrong, so as it be explicit. If it is right, it will serve as a guide to direct; if wrong, as a beacon to warn.” -

OK, all you Social-Security-eligible Typhoons out there .... once again it is time to jump into the "Way-Back Machine" and relive those thrilling days of yesteryear. A while back I received anonymously in the mail a collection of Beacons spanning 1961 through 1964. So, I will begin scanning what I think are the most interesting articles and photos for publication in the Newsletter. This should provide fodder for much reminiscing and more than a few guffaws. - Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 01/31/08 WOWZERONI-RINI! Thanks, Dave! |

Webdoll,
Thanks to Rummager-in-Chief Dave Spriggs (’64) of VA for yet another great addition to the archives with his find of THE BEACON. It is a reminder of the fun, challenge and camaraderie among those of us who staffed the bi-monthly school paper. We clipped individual letters from strips and pieced them together to make the headlines. We transitioned in 1960 from an old Press Graflex camera to a Polaroid Land Camera for our photos. We hunt and pecked on an early version of the electric typewriter on which we could justify the copy and we used skills learned at Mrs. Walker’s Wee Wisdom Kindergarten to cut and paste each edition. There was something “heady” about that rubber cement! Those were the early days of offset printing.
As an added note, the article in the November ’61 edition about Band Sweetheart finalists Carol Petenbrink ('62) and Suzie Nunnally ('62) brought to mind Carol’s flag twirling talents and Suzie’s skill on the French horn. Suzie was a good friend and I note she is not among the alumna listings for the Class of ’62. I’m curious where she might be?

Thanks, Norm!
