Mr. Pillow
was one of the first surprises awaiting me as an
NNHS "mouse". I was
assigned to his General Science 3-4 class in the Fall I always
thought he might be more comfortable teaching
in a college situation, where
the students might demonstrate
a higher level |

In the Fall of 1964, Mr. Pillow
would become partly responsible (some might say “to blame”) for my meeting
the lady whom I would eventually marry in January 1970. I was attending
Christopher Newport then-College on a part-time basis and taking two
classes. One was College Algebra and Trigonometry, taught by Raoul
Weinstein, NNHS ’57 (of FL). The other was College Physics with Mr. Pillow. My old
cohort in crime, John Scull ('64 - of VA) (see
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/buckroe-amusement.html for just
one example), was in both classes with me. As we were both battle-scarred
veterans of Emilie Holladay and
J.K. Alvis, we were coasting through these
classes and, therefore,
had wayyyyy too much time on our hands. Well, the
problem was that the potential players were preoccupied with homework, whereas
we were breezing through these classes with little effort. Looking back, it was
a no-brainer: “Hey, we will do your Physics homework problems for you for 15
minutes; then you give us the remaining 45 minutes filling out a foursome.” It
was the old “quid pro quo” stratagem. Enter the aforementioned lady, who loved
bridge, but hated Physics. A match made in Heaven. This arrangement served us
well for the remainder of the semester, after which I had to follow my parents
to Maryland while awaiting an appointment to the Naval Academy. |

Tears on My Pillow
(Johnny
Tillotson)
You don't
remember me, but I remember you
'T was not so long ago, you broke my heart in two
Tears on my pillow, pain in my heart, caused by you, you
If we could start anew, I wouldn't hesitate
I'd gladly take you back, and tempt the hands of fate
Tears on my pillow, pain in my heart, caused by you, you, you, you, you
Love is not a gadget, love is not a toy
When you find the one you love, he'll fill your heart with joy
If we could start anew, I wouldn't hesitate
I'd gladly take you back, and tempt the hands of fate
Tears on my pillow, pain in my heart, caused by you, you
No, no no no now, no, no no
